REAL TALK: What separates gamers from nubs?

I want to know how prevalent the line of thought is that "real" gamers only play PC games, as I think this is a divisive line of thought. XD

What separates gamers from nubs is difficulty level. Go hard or go home.

pc games require an investment of time and money. if you can afford neither and instead rely on shallow overstimulation in short bursts, you're probably a nub. if you are not experienced with pc gaming's history, which directly influenced all the games you like -- especially the wacky jappy rpgs -- you are a nub. stop what you are doing, go to underdogs.org, and get educated!

the original sf2 had some pretty bad art, anyhow. some of the pre-super portraits were AIEE and guile's sprite has always looked awful. same for blanka!

But I have no interest in PC gaming's history...and how exactly did PC gaming influence stuff like Street Fighter or 2D platformers?  As far as I know, those genres were born in either the arcade or the console.

I really don't see why I should start investing time and money in a format I have no interest in, lest I be called a nub.

I've been playing games since the '80s, though, way too long for me to ever consider myself a nub.

you haven't played a civ title! you haven't played a good version of the ultima titles! you haven't played starcraft, or diablo 2, or no one lives forever, or battlefield 2, or x-com, or system shock 2, or baldur's gate 2, or torment, or full throttle, or grim fandango, or master of magic, or galactic civilizations 2! nubz0r!

X-Com was the first game I bought for PSX.  I've played it extensively.  I'm sure I could make a list of classic console or arcade titles you haven't played extensively, but I wouldn't think that marks you as a nub, I'd just think you had either not had the chance to play them or that they just didn't appeal to you conceptually.

I want to say PC and platform of choice, isn't there a way to let polls make you say multiple decisions?

the psx version is grossly inferior and does not include terror from the deep. that's like saying you played ultima v because you played the nes version, or panzer general because you played the saturn version. nub!

i guarantee i have played most console titles, because i am not a nub. i do not exclude major platforms with extensive histories, because i am a real gamer. buy a pc.

PC is included under platform of choice.  What you want to do would defeat the purpose of the poll.

Prole, I own a PC.  I'm just not interested in 90% of the games you mentioned, other than Grim Fandango and Full Throttle, which I'll probably get around to playing someday.

They're just not appealing to me.  I played Caesar II and III (forgot to mention those) and they were okay, but just not my type of game, and I assume Civilization resembles them in some respects.  I couldn't care less about FPS games, so there goes one of the most important genres on PC, right out the window.  I dislike PC RPGs from what I've seen of them, so there goes stuff like Baldur's Gate 2 and Neverwinter Nights.

It's not my format of choice for the type of gaming I like to do, and I don't like the keyboard/mouse interface for gaming.

I used to be a big PC gamer back in junior high and high school, but I lost interest in keeping up with it all. Plus, I'm not a fan of RTS games.

wait, how does it make sense to only choose one of those as making you a real gamer?  I'd have to choose PC then because it can play 20 year old games and has emulators.

Even I voted "Playing good games on your machine of choice (be it a console, a PC, or an arcade cabinet).". I don't think you need any experience playing PC games to not be a veterna gamer. I would think that there would be a terrible lack of perspective on game design by someone who has completely ignored PC gaming, but that knowledge isn't a prerequisite to being a gamer, just a critic or designer.

I don't think you understand the poll.

Frag, as I stated in the other thread (where I took this topic from, since I didn't want to derail Prole's topic), I have played some PC games, and found that the PC gaming experience isn't to my liking..I'm not bashing it, and I'd never criticize PC games, or FPS games...I just don't "get" them and for the most part don't enjoy playing them.

I've tried going back to the old Ultima games and they are insanely difficult and it's hard to know what to do without relying on walkthroughs. And I'm someone who has been playing RPGs since Dragon Warrior 1. The old Ultimas are really good though, and you can clearly see how they influenced early Japanese RPGs.

I don't think there is any shame in saying that you prefer your games simple. Limited amount of options, limited scope of the game, limited controls. You can still be a gamer and stick to those preferences.

Consoles were created with the intention of appealing to the widest possible amount of people as possible. Gamers want to chide the Wii for what it's doing .. but Nintendo is only going back to what made consoles popular in the first place. They've just cast the net wider.

There are certain hex-based war games and difficult RTS's (like Supreme Commander) that I will never be able to grasp. They are just too complex for me to handle because I never played them as a kid. It doesn't mean those games "suck" it just means they are not for me.

I agree with that, the sense of achievement you get from beating something tough is awesome as hell.

I love graphic adventures, and that's a PC-centric genre.

As do I, but my first graphic adventures were played on the NES: Maniac Mansion, Shadowgate, and Deja Vu.  Actually, there's a bunch of graphic adventures on PC I'd like to play (Prole mentioned two of them already), but I haven't bothered to do research into compatibility, emulation, and heck, just finding the games in the first place.

Isn't it mostly a dead genre on PC nowadays?  I'm probably showing my ignorance of PC gaming by asking that question.

when it comes to multiplayer games, I think you need experience with different platforms to see how they affected different genres and whatnot (online gaming first on PC, N64 4 player splitscreen, etc.) but you're platform of choice and challenging games on it are what would make you a real gamer for singleplayer games.

"Dead", as in it hasn't been innovative in the past 10 years. But that doesn't stop JRPG's from still selling.

There are still about half a dozen quality graphic adventures released every year on the PC. A new round of "Sam and Max" ones came out recently and had high reviews.

didn't it go in the order arcade>PC>console gaming?  I'd imagine that many games like FPS, RTS, and RPG which you can't do on arcades started out on PC.

Stuff like Ultima was the direct ancestor of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.  The modern Japanese RPG is a direct descendant of those early PC games.

Ichirou is forgetting Wizardry and Rogue as well.

Also: the obvious Doom, Wolfenstein, Half Life picks.

I think Sim City is pretty influential.

PC adventure games started the whole "i got a puzzle and if i solve it i can move on to the next story bit" thing that many console adventure and action adventure titles that we still see today.

I think a more interesting discussion would be "what pc games were influenced by console games" vice versa is so obvious.
