Yup, it's Monday again.
« on: September 30, 2007, 08:37:36 PM »
HOW'S YOUR MONDAY?

The past two weeks were great because they were both three-day weekends.  This week, I'm not so lucky, and because I had off two Mondays in a row, I knew something was going to happen when the first full week came back.

In this case, it's nothing bad, just FUCKING BOREDOM.  I get to work and find out that they haven't bothered to make a work schedule for me, and then scurry around hunting down teachers to ask them about today's class.  And none of them have any need for me today.

So now I get to sit here from 8:15-4:00 bored out of my fucking mind.  Should have sneaked the DS or PSP.  Might as well go take a nap in the corner.

Next week is yet another three-day weekend, at least...

I've got a 7am meeting tomorrow morning, so that means I'm up at 5:30am... yay. My wife starts fall classes (evening MBA program), so I'll be able to get in some good gaming time, though!

Well, the teacher who's supposed to make the schedule must have gotten the hint and now I'm going to three classes.  Better than nothing, I guess, but still annoying.  My other school doesn't do this and ALWAYS has the schedule made on time with no mistakes.  Last month's schedule was 80% wrong and I kept having to run around finding teachers to see if it was correct.   :maf

Do you teach senior high school or junior high?  I teach a couple of senior high schools and I have a set schedule for each week.

Junior High.  I get a set schedule every month.  The problem is that the teacher who makes the schedule gets different class schedule information earlier and goes off that.  Then it changes and it's all out of whack.  The schedule sheet for September is barely readable right now because of the all the changes that were made to it.

I really don't fucking understand it.  My other school gives me a schedule every month and there is NEVER an issue like this.  There's also another teacher, who while a very nice lady, tends to cancel my classes with her 98% of the time.  I have been to one of the senior classes probably twice this entire year because of this.

Some teachers just don't like the whole team teaching experience...you're teaching 2 schools, right?  How can you plan lessons if you don't know what year you're going to be teaching and you don't know when you'll be teaching classes and how they fit into the rest of the schedule?  That sounds pretty insane.

I just came back from a party with the board game group from uni, and was actually considering asking one of the girls out, but it's just too damn difficult to have even a minute to talk alone with her with no other persons around to pry into my moves. That, and a potential decline from her end would then make the subsequent reunions clouded by malaise for both of us. So sadly I'll be forced to sway and to wait for a few more weeks, if not months, until the regular group activities end before finally tossing the dice or so to speak.

Tomorrow I'll go seek a cure for my cold at the drugstore.

Plan...lessons...?  ???

That never happens, man.  I get asked to make small supplements or make games, but that's about it.  Rarely do I get to make and do the actual lesson alone.  I go to the teachers and they tell me what I'm going to be doing with them.  I usually get asked a week or a few days in advance to plan something.  Do you teach Junior High too?  It seems to me that JHS ALTs have far, far less planning to do than High School ALTs do.

For example recently I made a map game.  Drew a big map and had the kids follow and write various directions.  That took up a whole class.  Or I changed one lesson the teacher was going to do about the location of objects in a room (above, under, in, on, etc.) to a drawing game where I described a room to the kids and then they drew the same room based on what they heard and understood.  But most days I assist; either helping the kids with their writing, doing interview tests, or just being a "human taperecorder" and reading.  It all depends on the teacher and the class.

I was having an OK day until I decided to start looking for a new apartment.

What's a good income percentage to spend on rent?  I can't find anything for under 50% of my income anywhere north of Washington DC and that would be a bit too much of a commute to my place of employment. :'(

My meeting with Angry Dad today at work went quite well. He evolved into Friendly and Cooperative Dad, thank God.
