Inaugural Blu Ray thread, attempt 2
« on: October 01, 2007, 02:55:14 AM »
Okay, I have been acquiring Blu Ray movies.  Tonight was going to be the night of my first one, but I, uh, ended up playing Blue Dragon for about 10 hours.

Here are the Blu Rays from which I will pick:

Purple Rain alone is worth a BLue Ray player.

Yeah, I got Purple Rain and Kingdom of Heaven before I even had an HDTV.  I have watched both of them, but not on the new big TV.

I only got Kingdom of Heaven on blu ray because at the time, they did not have the DC on DVD in stock, so it was either Blu Ray or crappy theatrical version.

Don't get 300. The film-grain effect or whatever it is that they used with that movie make it meh for a HD quality. I have the HD-DVD version and its just "meh" compared to the amazingness of King Kong's CG. Kong's fur and the T-Rexes are orgasmic.

the 300 transfer was supposdely glitchy. like, the shadows would flicker. i don't know if they fixed that or not.

The Fountain

But the DVD transfer was pretty shoddy, so who knows how the BRD version ended up.

The only one of those movies I've seen is 300.

I still need to watch my copy of The Fountain.  :-[

I have mixed feelings.  It was ok for what it was but could have been much better.  It's definitely the best "ooh pretty" candidate on that list, imo.  But I know Whitey will bitch about it.

Oh, I thought you were talking to me. But yeah, if this is an exercise to get the most out of Blu-Ray, it'd probably be the best choice from what I've heard.

I have only seen it once. . .

I love the comic, and I think the movie came out pretty darned tootin good.  Easily one of my favorite comic movies.  And Guillermo del Toro is a pretty awesome director, even if Hellboy isn't Devil's Backbone or Pan's Labyrinth quality.

Plus I have a general policy of not double dipping, and I don't own Hellboy, and I saw it was one of the few things I giv a fuck about on BD.

The Fountain is a great movie, but I've heard Volver is very visually stunning. I hated the KoH TC but even that version had some beautiful cinematography.

All Almodovar movies are visually stunning.  Even the things that sound really mundane in descriptions.  He's probably one of the better visual directors out there.

Holy shit Purple Rain is out on blu-ray?  Looks like I'm making my second purchase.

Whitey:  Watch Volver.  It's one of his weaker efforts but it is worth it for the visuals.

Yeah, I saw Purple Rain in the new releases section like a month ago, and I nabbed it ASAP, even without then having an HDTV or having immediate plans to get one.  It's still something of an odd release, since it doesn't seem like catalog releases are part of anyone's Blu Ray release strategy.  But I ain't complainin'.

I am thinking Volver or Hellboy.  Volver if I feel in the mood for subtitles, otherwise Hellboy, which I haven't seen in a while.

The Director's Cut of Hellboy is a much better cut, although it does not address the rushed climax at the end.  It screams, "Hey, we were relatively small budget and need to wrap this up!"  Hopefully, coming off his Oscar high, they'll give Del Toro the funds necessary to make an all-around awesome Hellboy flick, instead of a vastly underrated, highly enjoyable, but ultimately flawed one.

I'm kind of surprised Hellboy was picked up for a Blu Ray release.  It did modestly well, but it's not like it was super popular, and while it has great visual designs, it's not like it's a big super special effects showcase.  Maybe it was picked up for Blu Ray release due to the success and critical acclaim of Pan's Labyrinth or something.

Again, not complaining.  The movie is good and it is one of my favorite comics ever.

Pan's Labyrinth not out in HD, though?

Oh, is Hellboy 2 still happening?

Word.  I think this movie is just really beautiful the way it's filmed.  The color and scenery is so fantastic yet grounded in reality.  I bet it looks amazing even though it's a little subtle in HD.

But yeah, father issues  :'(

I watched Big Fish when it first came out, and I liked it.  I can't recall too much of it, but I remember it being Burton's strongest movie since Ed Wood.  The reason I nabbed it was because I remembered it having nice, Burtony visuals.

I know it wouldn't make a hot 2 hour movie, but I am surprised nobody has ever tried to do any sort of adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Sandman.
