BoF: Dragon Quarter - Its awesome
« on: October 01, 2007, 09:27:49 PM »
Im not saying the game is bad or anything, I just cant figure out how the fuck youre meant to play it.... or does this become more apparent as you play more? Basically I figured out the battle system and everything OK, but the whole SOL Restart/ Restore option is confusing the crap out of me... how often are you supposed to use this? Do you get penalized for bailing out using this often? Some tips on getting started would be appreciated, for some reaon I was unable to get anything relevant from Gamefaqs

You're supposed to play it like you're AWESOME and you ROCK and don't SUCK AT IT.

You NEVER use SOL restart if you don't suck. never use your dragon powers or you will use your percent up. it's that simple. people who suck at dq use dragon powers and in turn complain that they have to restart the game 999 times!~

I'm gonna start this game really soon, tried it once and died like right away in a room with a million bats right near the beginning of the game. Didn't get the SOL system at all. I will replay once I'm done with Halo 3 and try to make sense out of it this time. I really wanna play it, I like the atmosphere and music.

I tried my best to like it, and on some level I dug it a lot, but I could never get over the fact that your stupid meter rises AS YOU WALK.  DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB

The idea of the game is youre supposed to have to start over, some people may not dig that. The game had a really ingenious battle system and you could invent all kinds of ways to lure enemies, layer traps, and bash enemies into those traps. Its a tough game..real tough. VP2 was also tough, but you didnt have a dragon meter ;-)

well I spent a few hours with the game today and managed to get to grips with it pretty well... the battle system is fantastic, its pretty cool customising your attacks and stuff and setting up the baddies up to land on your bombs or the Fire Circle you just created. So yeah great game! Once the initial confusion goes away its all good

If you don't like this, but love Dead Rising, you're an idiot.

If you love DQ, but hate Dead Rising, you're an idiot.

Just a FYI there, cause they're the same thing. If you hadn't noticed.

Its an awesome game. The SOL system and trying to get the best Dragon Ratio (won't explain, its cool to find out the secret shit for yourself) is addictive. I think I got like 1/57th ratio or something. The Best is 1/4th I believe, which is insane (you'll need a guide)

New secret areas open up as you reprogress through the game etc etc Uber Equipment etc. Fun fun fun. Capcom really needs to show what they'll be doing next with this IP.

This is going to be hard for some people. Basically, you have to play the game 3/4 of the way through first and realize you fucked up the game. Then start over and play the game again, this time with more efficiency.

It can be a big turnoff to some people. But, for me, after coming off brain-dead games like Star Ocean and Tales of Symphonia .. it was like a breath of fresh air.

BoFV didnt sell that well, and isn't treasured by the masses even this late in the game, I mean it still retails used for 12 bucks, but its rare you see something done so differently and so well at the same time; ESPECIALLY in the BoF series.

The actual game itself, including the replays, isn't too long to finish... correct?

I never found this to be an issue. Both times I played through the game I made it to the final boss with better than 80% left. There is absolutely no reason to go over just by walking around.

The actual game itself, including the replays, isn't too long to finish... correct?

I think it took me around 20 hours the first time, but each time after that it takes 2-4 hours less. To get the best score you're supposed to beat it in under 8.

This is going to be hard for some people. Basically, you have to play the game 3/4 of the way through first and realize you fucked up the game. Then start over and play the game again, this time with more efficiency.

I actually made it all the way through on my first play through. I missed one of the last save points though and I remember the adrenaline rush of playing at like 2am, without having saved for 4 hours or whatever and being in the final dungeon scaring me. I've never felt nervous like that playing a modern RPG.

Just wait until you get Lin if you haven't yet. Setting traps, then using Nina's magic and Lin's shot to set up the enemies for Ryu before you start combat. I love the battle system in this game.

I didn't have to restart the game at all because I rock.

BoF5 proves that 3 characters is all you need to have an omg battle system and tons of variety

Okay Im about 12 hours in now and my D-counter is at a paltry 18%. I actually resorted to using Dragon Powers for the 1st time last night, as I needed to go to sleep, I hadnt saved for over an hour, and a boss was gonna kill me as I was low on healing items. Im not sure If I'll replay it straight away for the extra scenes, as Id rather get stuck into VP2.

yeah its definitely a fresh experience, Im scared of the D-counter so I really dont want to use the powers. Also the powers arent really that necessary, I havent had any trouble with killing bosses normally if I make proper preparation, but that instance where I did use them was actaully the 1st time I needed to, as there were quite a few consecutive boss fights with no save in between, my inventory got pretty depeleted. And im pretty sure If I hold out on the powers the last boss will probably be a cinch

So, I started playing this this weekend, just made it through the waste facility board... Honestly I'm finding it to be frustrating... although I am learning. Does it ever get any easier? I make it to a save point like with barely any healing items and HP left, usually.

Any advice for playing? Oh yeah, with the SOL system... when I die, should I just "Restore" or "Restart"? What is recommended? And what should I do with Party XP? Should I save it, or dole it out as soon as I get more? What actually carries over when you Restart from the beginning of the game?

Reserve your items. Think of it as a survival horror rpg. Also, it gets a lot easier to get into once you've met Nina, who you get right after the first dungeon (which is the waste management dungeon irrc). It gets a tad easier once you get the catgirl. Then, it forces you to learn how to use all three characters in sync, and the difficulty ramps up.

As for SOL, it depends. I go for good ol restore. Party xp doesn't matter, dude. Just allot that shit to your characters.

As for what carries over when you SOL restart. I dunno because I didn't do it lol

Yeah I just got Nina and Lynn, (Lynn was in the waste facility dungeon), and made it to the town right after the dungeon, where I promptly saved. I've been hoarding the party exp (like I think I read that only party exp carries over when you restore/restart, and not levels?), good thing now I know to dole it out... that might make things a bit easier for me.

XP carries over but there's no reason to not use your xp dude. If I remember, levels carry over but I don't remember. It's been almost 2 years.

Luminous Arc is a lot of fun and gets a bad rap. As a game it IS better than FFT. Yes it has fixed characters and fixed classes, but the flexibility in the aging FFT doesnt particularly help it any. I would also so its more interesting, thanks to the story and characters, than FFTA, but not as deep as FFTA. Its also pretty forgiving, but you can do a second play-through on a higher difficulty. It does have a few bitch maps that you REALLY have to work in some inventive decoy tactics and make tough choices.

I will say that the the moderate, but not TOO easy, difficulty was nice cause I could actually complete the game without being a total japtard RPG player that has played them for years.

Levels don't carry over but I think your stats do. On a normal playthrough there's no reason not to use party XP, you won't really accumulate much. If you want to do a 1/4 run then you'll do a bunch of SOL runs specifically to build up your items, xp and money. But if you're just playing through for the first time you might as well use all your XP.
