Bike riders with Helmets attract cars?
« on: October 03, 2007, 12:58:26 PM »
The latest Scientific American has dedicated this month's fact or fiction section to a study done that suggests that wearing a bike helmet while riding actually causes the drivers of cars to take more of a chance, giving up to 3-4 inches less space to ride. More specifically, 23% more cars came within the one meter 'danger zone' as he rode with a helmet. Additionally, the researcher wore a long wig to look like a woman, and he actually received more room from drivers.

When you jerks are driving how much room do you give those morans swerving in and out of the bike lane? Im so paranoid if I have room to change lanes until I pass them I do.

If I was a cop I'd give tickets to people who ride bikes in the street. God damn.

I usually just switch lanes before I come close to them, just in case. But I give them the evil eye as I pass

Well most cities have bike lanes, but these lanes are still kinda narrow.

Nah I'm talking about the people who ride in the regular lanes and do those stupid turn signals with their hands like they're so cool. I've seen them zig zag between lanes!  >:(

And then there's the poor guys who ride around at 10PM in dark clothes so you can't see them. omg

If I'm bicycling, I generally disregard bicycle sidewalk laws.  If I'm on street with a high speed limit or if there's moderate traffic and I have a sidewalk available, I'll be damned if I'm not riding on it instead.  I don't really care if it's rude to be cycling around pedestrians -- it's much better than narrowly escaping collisions with stupid drivers every few minutes.

I do this too.

and there's nothing wrong with bikes going into normal lanes.  they normally only do that when they have to do a left turn and then they do it really wide so they go back into the right lane.

I hate bike riders in car lanes. When I was at Ohio University the hipsters would do this thing called "critical mass where they would ride their bikes around and obstruct traffic. I'm not sure what the point was.

I think that started in SF (where there's lots of bikers) where they would choose one day and everybody would ride their bike on that day so that people don't "push" the bikers.  Did people at your university actually stop their bikes?
