Hellgate: London
« on: October 03, 2007, 06:59:43 PM »
Just got an email stating this.  I've been in the alpha for a while.

Without saying too much, the game is good, not great, and I am not yet sure if the monthly plan will be worth it because I really don't know how much content they will be providing.

The major issue with the game, and this is pretty major, is lack of skills.  Each class has one skill tree, which is beyond paltry.  Well, that's the major issue assuming they clean up the glitches and crashes.

Yes, you can pay 10 bucks or something a month for the Elite account, which gives you more storage, some extra options, and monthly new content.

It's a huge ripoff.  Nobody could deliver enough content every month to make that worthwhile.

Oh wait, you have to pay to play PVP, too.  And for hardcore mode.

Yes, it is like Guild Wars in structure.  Towns have lotsa players, dungeons only have you and your party members.  You can solo the game.

Unlike Guild Wars, the game isn't a total piece of shit, though.

wtf, I can understand the 'elite club' for more storage and extra options...I suppose pay for play PVP removes the Rich vs Poor competition debate...even so

Yeah, it sounds like a total racket.  Unless they can deliver an impressive amount of new content monthly, I say fuck them.

I am pretty sure the game will probably bomb.  Unless they buy off reviewers, it's going to get 7s and 8s, and this season isn't a good time to release good, not great games, and expect the folks to make them hits.  Especially when a large portion of their model is probably based on that monthly fee catching on.

I could be wrong--good Diablo-esques don't come out often, so maybe the people are hungry--but I really don't see this being very successful.  Flagship has promised the world over the past several years, and they have delivered, I dunno, Portugal:  Nice place, but would you really want to buy it when presented with Spain or Brazil?

Buy it and get me those credits, I love the smell of a sweet bomb. Maybe they will dump everyone like Sigil did, and blame it on the dirty poors who can't run the game.

Titan Quest and Expansion are a game thats in some ways better than Diablo II and both sold like crap. Hellgate would need to blow the fucking doors off the genre with a monthly fee attached :p

I might buy it, depending on how my load looks at the end of this month.

Nobody should worry about not being able to run this.  It runs pretty well and it scales well.  What people should worry about are the frequent crashes that are still present in current builds, when it should be going gold any day now.

Flagship's been hedging their bets against the US market and into Asia especially for this game. To be fair, they could very well make enough money in that market with a 8.0 game + subs in all markets to keep it going long enough to figure out WTF they are doing here in the US. They have the talent, and they could very well turn the boat around ala EvE Online.

Comes out on October 31st (Halloween, moo hoo hoo) in the US, some time in November over in Europe.  Created by some of the folks behind the Diablo series, and is supposed to be an RPG/FPS/Roguelike hybrid.

My interest is piqued.  A friend of mine is getting it and said I should get it as well so we can play it online together. :heartbeat

I'm interested, but the whole debacle with the "optional" monthly fee to get all the real content has kind of ruined it for me.

(I merged this and Ichirou's topics, but since I can't modify posts, I couldn't add "pre-order and get into the beta" back into the topic.  Sorry TVC)

Getting back on topic...Since I hadn't seen TVC's post, I wasn't aware about the monthly plan thing, which sounds like complete bullshit.  I'm e-mailing my friend about this, and I will probably skip this game due to this.

Smooth Groove, I was going to play this game till I found out about the whole monthly plan rip-off.  The only reason I was interested in this particular game was 'cuz it'd be a good chance to hang out with my best friend online since we live so far away from each other.
