So how does this work? I want a PS2 with HDD so I can get games installed on it. Will that work with PS1 games too?

If I can get it for a reasonable price I'm buying it ASAP. I've missed out on PS2 for too long.

Check www.ncsx.com, they sell import stuff, you can probably buy a modded PS2 from them and you can ask them if it plays US PSX games as well.

Yes. You'll need the latest swap magic. You need to look up this shit; I haven't bothered with any of it in a couple of years now.

I got tired of owning a Japanese PS2 and an American PS2 (with swap disc), so I sold them both and just got a slimline PS2 with a mod chip. Works perfectly.

The PS2 library is massive and there are so many awesome games. I don't even know where to begin recommending stuff, especially if you want PS1 games too. HOLY SHIT you missed the fuck out.

You're talking about outdated games; titles that have long since been replaced by superior editions on newer consoles. It's the classics that are still worth going back to, stuff like Jumping Flash! 1 and 2, Ghost In The Shell, Tobal 2, Slap Happy Rhythm Busters, Bust-A-Move 1 and 2 (the dancing games), etc.

Sell that Micro and Game Cube and get yourself a DS Lite. Get yourself a PSP to go along with that PS2. That will keep you busy for some time.

Then it's time to move onto Xbox 360 and PS3.

just get one of those modchips that don't require soldering if you don't want to use the hdd. if you do, you're sol since you'll have to mod a slim or pay a load of money for a fat ps2.

If you're going the completely legal route, I'd totally get a PS3 over a PS2 right now. You can play all the PS2 games, some benefit from faster load times, and then you'll have a next-gen system which is going to get better in the next year.

The only "lol" here is keeping a Game Cube when you have a Wii.

A premodded PS2 shouldn't cost too much and shouldn't be that hard to get a hold of in this day and age...

I think they might be a little cheaper now...maybe around 18,000 yen? I haven't looked in a while.

Question, my friend is in the army and is currently in S. Korea, and he told me that he can buy a cheap modded 360, and PS3. I told him he shouldn't saying that he'd get banned from XBL, and PSN but he told me no one else there has, so I was wondering if the mods are either undetectable now, or if being in Korea it doesn't matter?

I'm starting to get back into video games as well (never owned or even played PS2, GC or Xbox) and just bought a DS with three games. I'd like to buy a PS2 and GC as well sometime soon, but I don't have a TV and space is at a premium for me --- anyone know anything about VGA adapters? Ability to play Japanese games is also important. + I'm not sure whether to buy a slimline or try and find a bulky PS2 with HDD. on the one hand I hate bulky things, on the other hand I really hate loadtimes. (and a number of the games I want to play are RPGs which support HDD install in their Japanese releases)

you have two options ps2 wise:

1. get the old fat ps2 (good luck finding a new one nowadays) and an HDD, then buy swap magic (3.8 coder) to load burned games or burn a copy of hd loader (which is free, never buy the retail version) and rip games to your hdd (or download rips and transfer them via pc/usb)

2. buy a slim ps2 with a modchip. expect the disc drive to die within months of playing burnt backups

I suggest option 1, or go legit and buy a ps3 for the upscaling (which is pretty nice looking)
