Western Society's obsession with blondes: Brunettes am cry?
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:13:41 AM »
I don't understand why blonde chicks are always hot and brunettes are never in the spotlight like blondes. I mean what the hell. I was under the assumption when I was younger that hair color didn't matter but apparently blondes are always hot or something. Wtf. I even saw this on tv and this person recommended that every brunette or non-blonde in general should dye their hair BLONDE at least once in their life. I was like "NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!", but I guess it depends on what a girl wants for herself.

This obsession with blondes becomes increasingly apparent with Hayden Panettiere's popularity. I think she looks nice but not as hot as everyone else says she is. :-\

If anything, I believe blonde girls should at least dye their hair dark. :hyper :heartbeat

Um. What?

Blondes are popular, either through comedy or looks, but brunettes get plenty of love.

Shut the fuck up.

I don't really give a shit who gets paid attention more. I like whatever kind of girl, no matter what her hair is. As long as it's not blue or green or purple, it's cool. Seriously.

Blondes are eh. The only Blondes I like are actresses and I think its just Elisha Cuthbert but shes actually a brunette YEHAW. Most blonde chicks I actually know are airheads or got molested at some point so they've got some weird emotional quirk. Also, screw brunettes, Black hair and Redheads ftw :bow

For more than half a century Americans have been conditioned to think blondes are better looking. It's been a pretty good marketing plan I suppose, from TV to adds to Barbie. Blonde hair, blue eyes. There are lots of studies on this and its impact on girls of color, and it impacts white girls as well; there are so many white girls who become blonde just to conform to this mindset, get more attention, etc.

Personally I'm not into blondes. It's not that I dismiss them automatically, but I prefer darker hair. Brunettes are great and should have nothing to be ashamed of.

Is there any difference between brunettes and girls with black hair? Brunette means brown hair or black hair.

I always took Brunettes was various shades of brown, be it very very dark (but not black) or real light (almost red). Jet black hair should be in its own class :drool

back when i was dating, i believe hair color was somewhere between "name starts with a 'K'" and "likes films by Robert Altman" on my wholly arbitrary and pointless set of standards for potential mates, all of which were fathoms below my #1 and #2 requirements: "is not an ug" and "will talk to me," respectively. it was just enough to get those two to collude in my favor that hair color quickly became an utterly academic distinction.

nerd standards ftl, folks. ftl.

Your real-world requirements have no place in a thread started by an individual whose "dating scene" is his tv screen.

I also prefer girls who play Metal Gear Solid 3

But, in defense of myself, I don't poopoo girls who have a hair color I like or dislike. If a blonde girl and me connect, its not I'm going to pass her by just because shes a blonde :>

I generally gravitate towards dark and red heads though (as stated).

my biggest requirement is a woman who doesn't LIKE to fight.  some women just want drama with everything and i don't want to.  i'm very calm in real life and i like to avoid arguing because it goes nowhere.  a woman that likes to argue will not fly.

Brunettes get more love from me.  The one type of blonde I like is the short, chin length blonde.  The blonde bombshell look turns me off.  I really hated the 80s rock video blondes.

I remember reading somewhere that psychologists thought blondes were so appealing because a lot of people have blonde hair that turns darker as they grow older - so blonde hair is a symbol of youth.

Hopefully, that's true. Mine's still very very pale.

But now it's been two times in a row that I've been able to buy beer without having the clerk of random convenience stores demanding to see an ID, so luck might be running thin.

Media organizations are generally interested in only one color: GREEN! If purple hair sold then we would have actresses dying their hair purple. If wrinkly skin, big noses, and flat chests turned men on, then Beatrice Arthur would be gracing the cover of Play Boy. Men are hard wired to find features that are generally associated with youth to be desirable. Natural blonde hair becomes less common as people age and so blonde hair is a proxy (not a strong one) for youth (and thus fertility) in women. Also blonde hair reflects light better than dark hair and is thus more likely to capture the attention of men. So, while hair color alone does not make a woman attractive or unattractive, all things being equal blonde hair is attractive to men.

malek's irked by overzealous third-wave feminists treating everything (up to and including anatomy) as a social construct, but using evolutionary psych to work backwards from conventional wisdom isn't any better.

If blond hair were objectively a plus in sexual selection, there'd be more blonds.  Either that, or dark hair has some super-good survival value.

If it's not a social construct now, it will be soon enough.  When I was in 4th grade, I used to fantasize about bioengineering the human race to reproduce asexually, because I'd decided that sex was the underlying cause of all the problems with adult behavior and society I saw around me.  I still have some of the plans I drew up at that time, around four notebooks' worth.  Anyway, the point is that when this sort of thing becomes possible, it'll be up to 'society' to decide what anatomy, etc. we should have.

I'd settle for killing off all guys taller than me.  Of course, that leads you to the question of whether male height as a measure of beauty is a social construct...

(Even if it is, I think it would be strong enough to endure through my schtupping years).

Isn't the blonde gene recessive?

I think there's an informal consensus that it is, but they haven't found the genomes, and it's not simple enough that you could draw the old Punnett square for it (or there'd only be 2-4 total hair colors).

Either way, if being blond were objectively "better" (gave a leg-up in competitive reproduction regardless of environment including social factors), then it would be much, much more widespread than it is.
