Choices made during the commute - Evil or Instinct?
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:48:26 AM »
I was driving this morning and noticed that the left lane was backed up, as it usually is this time of day. The black car ahead of me (yes yes why's it always gotta be black) decided to ride the right lane, and then proceeded to not only change lanes in an intersection to get into the left lane, but also was happy with blocking the intersection to do so.

First of all, illegal, second of all ARHG. I mean there's only a few ways this can play out in their head.

1.) Oh shit I gotta get over, shit shit, an opening! *gets into lane* Oh shit, I forgot I have a meeting today, shit shit....

2.) Haha these motherfuckers in LINE. Dumb bitches. Yeah! Im gonna fuck ALL OF YOU! YEAH! IN THE INTERSECTION! BOOM! *changes lanes* HAHA TRY USING THIS INTERSECTION NOW BITCHES! WOOOOO!!! KEGGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean realistically, they all gain 20 seconds at most, and that 20 seconds is lost somewhere down the road anyway.

People are just dumb and don't think long term.

I've seriously found that in most cases, it's best to stay in the lane you're in.

But I can kind of sympathize.  traffic doesn't bother me as long as i'm moving.  But if the car isn't going anywhere, it makes me want to kill someone.

Over here in Florida I think it's customary to not use blinkers. I dunno why, but I see more people NOT use blinkers than ones that do.

I dunno, ive been stuck in commutes so long in the past its rare I get upset over things not moving. I mean what will be will be when it comes to commutes, why waste energy getting angry or trying to get around at the potential cost of an accident you would be at fault for?

well i don't really get angry, it's just the only time it bothers me.  If we're moving at 5mph, i'm cool.  I don't care.

But if we're stopped, then I have time to be like "why the fuck isn't it moving?"  it's just frustrating.  I don't start yelling or anything :lol

I hate people who don't signal. Hate them with a passion. I mean, I guess I should already get it in my head that a person slowing down to 40MPH on the freeway or 5MPH on some side road are about to turn but 1) They don't put on their blinkers and 2) usually brake at the last second. In those cases, I wish I riding in some shitbox car and clip them just a little with my bumper which will allow me to keep going forward and will SPIN THEM THE FUCK OUT.

I'm a really easy going laid back guy, but man, I get seriously angry when I'm in the car by myself.

I hate people who stay in the exit only lane until the very last second and then attempt to merge. Hey, jackass, do you want to know why there's congestion? Because of geniuses like you.

I hate people who don't use their turn signal, and get over whenever they feel like, even if that means you have to strategically hit the breaks to avoid hitting them and also not getting hit by the people behind you.

I hate people who don't know how to merge. Don't try and merge onto I-5 at 30 miles an hour, it just ain't smart or safe!

I hate people who SLOW THE FUCK DOWN whenever there is ANYTHING on the side of the road. Yes, yes, a car has it's hazards on. Yes, yes, there's a cop an accident ON THE OTHER SIDE OF I-5! Good lord, I should slow down to 20 miles an hour!

my brother in-law is the epitome of road rager.  dude has gotten out of his car on multiple occasions during stops to scream at other drivers who either cut him off or "disrespected" him on the road.  he also got into a fight with a trucker.  they both parked at a local in/out burger and he beat the shit out of him.  then there's the rocks he keeps under his driver's side seat to throw at cars that fuck with him on the road.  scary dude...  glad he's on my side i guess.

Wow... I just make snide remarks about people safely in my car... I'd never actually do anything about it!

I was on the Autobahn back in 1986, with my grandfather driving a Volkswagen Van, getting passed by tractors on the side of the road.

I'm usually a pretty courteous driver because I concentrate a lot when I drive but I can't tell you how many times I've had people cuss me out because I refuse to go more than 5-7 mph over the speed limit (there's really no point doing more than that in the daytime here).  I was once on 880 not that long ago (they fixed that 1 mile fuckhole after 10 years btw) and it was a huge 30 mph max traffic jam for over half an hour.  I'm just going bumper to bumper the whole time.  anyways, after the traffic jam clears somebody behind me passes me on the right lane and says "why are you so slow" (this was a few seconds after traffic started to clear and I was going 50 mph by now) and he's punching his fist in the air and giving the evil eye, I was a bit confused.  that insane fuck.

I can't think of anybody who goes 10 mph over the speed limit and doesn't use their blinkers all the time that doesn't have at least one major accident, so...

880 is a breeze in the park compared to 101 during rush hour.  though i noticed people drive much crazier on 880, i think it's because there are more lanes.

there's more lanes now yes.  you should have seen what they did before...

I live in the san jose area and I usually only go to the east bay when I go north so I haven't been on 101 in a while.

try santa clara to san jose during rush hour.... that's about 5-10 miles (if you're going to south san jose).  expect to be home within 30-45 minutes.  fucking torture.  i used to work at redwood city and did that commute for a year.  fuck.  :maf

I don't know how people who do 1 hour commutes keep sane.  Actually now that I think about it, the people I know that have to do that are fucked up.

I've noticed that all the old people in Florida use their blinkers as they are turning or shortly afterwards.

My ex had a 45 min commute and I thought she was insane to want to live where we lived.  1 and a half hours in a car a day is way too much.  Maybe in a train where you can sleep/relax/listen to music/play ds it could be doable, but my time is too precious to spend it commuting.

Of course, for the right job opportunity I'd commute probably 1.5 hours each way every day.  But I'd only do that until I could move closer to that job.  Right now my commute is about 10 minutes, less than 5 miles.  It used to be 30 min in heavy traffic and about 20 miles.  Once I moved my stress level went down infinitely, it was nice.

When I was in AZ I spent 2-3 hours a day in the commute in temps of up to 113 degrees in a black car without air conditioning
