mother (main pc):
p3 1.5ghz
1gb ram
2x 250gb hdd @ 7200rpm
ATI All-In-Wonder 8500
soundblaster on the mobo fools
some random 100mb lan card
19" nice monitor
pioneer dvd+/-rw
canon scanner
canon pixus i90 printer
small footprint keyboard
ms optical mobile mouse
windows xp pro

jeuno (music/torrents):
mac mini
core duo 2ghz
512mb ram
160gb hdd
dvd-rom
mac os 10.3

satellite (holiday laptop):
vaio u3 (lol)
crusoe 933mhz
512mb ram
20gb hdd
6.4" xga

That Vaio is sweet.  Except for the ram, your Jeuno should be much faster than your mother.  You better backup the data on that mother since it's so old.  Didn't they stop making P3s 6 years ago?

Where is the respect for my power rig?  Do I have to get a Quad-Core and go SLI with another 8800 GTX to get some props?

Just one: An Alienware Area-51m Laptop P4 3.2ghz Extreme Edition w/Hyper Threading (I have no fucking clue what that means, if anything).  The graphics card inside is an ATI Radeon 9600.  Bought in 2004, it's like a fucking tank...the machine can take a licking and keep on ticking; it's been perfect for the moving around I've done in the last few years.  Has a problem with overheating that has been solved with a cooling pad and monthly cleaning.  15 inches and pretty heavy for a laptop.  It needs to be hauled around in a backpack and has shit battery life (like 45 minutes, and performance takes a huge hit), but I got it as a desktop replacement, so that doesn't matter to me.

My wife has this older Vaio laptop from 2002 or so that runs like SHIT.  I think it must be loaded up with crap.

I still don't know what my next computer is going to be.  Probably another laptop, and likely I'm going back to Apple.  I really want one of those tiny laptops like what Groo has for no reason whatsoever, even though the PSP n' DS offer internets for me as it is.

A P3-700 or something with 256MB RAM running Linux.  I got it for $20, and use it with a 19-inch CRT which also cost me $20.  I also own an SGI Octane which I bought for $2 (not a typo) at a garage sale.

That's a pretty good setup, Mupepe.  Weren't you asking about getting a new monitor?  I recommend a 20" widescreen which should work well with your 8800 640mb.  I prefer 20 inchers over 22 inchers because the resolution isn't increased on a 22".   Go for a 22" though if size is more important than sharpness for you.  This site is great for monitor reviews: http://www.behardware.com/html/cat/22/

I personally recommend a Viewsonic or Dell for best value.  Dell is especially good if you plan to plug in a console sometimes.

I should probably get a laptop, since I don't really game on PC. I can take it with me places (on those rare occasions I do go somewhere). But the whole "can't upgrade without pretty much buying a new machine" is a bit of a stickler.

It's 1280 x 800.  It's a 13.3 inch display, so that's plenty.  Due to the lower resolution, the 8400 works out pretty darned well.  Load times are a bit longer than I am used to since it's not packed with RAM (only 128 megs, compared to the 600whatever on my laptop).  Performance is fine.  I can keep things maxed out for the most part, although I naturally have stayed away from the high end perf stuff like Quake Wars and shit.  It runs all of Orange Box better than the 360 version, though.  That's what I used for benching.  I can max out everything.  And AA and AF.  I get good, stable framerates, but I did end up turning some TF2  stuff down to get the stable uber-high framerates necessary for a speedy multiplayer game.

Now I am mostly playing strat shit on it, and graphics adventures and other such non-reflex oriented games.  I have a nice mouse, but being a laptop, more often than not I am in a situation where it is easier to go for the trackpad than the mouse.

That's pretty good.  The 7300 isn't THAT terrible.  I imagine you'd be able to play most, if not all games on the market with respectable settings.  A 7300 is basically a 6800 with some lower numbers.  It should be fine if you aren't interested in super-high end shit.

It's more like a 6600 with DDR2.

The problem is that the power supply is 375 watts. The CPU is only 65 watts. However a 8800 GTS or GTX is out of the question. I hear that the 8800 GT will only consume 110 watts. Can I get away with a 375 PSU?

You should if the power requirement is really 110 watts.  The 8800 GT sounds really awesome.  If the performance and power requirements are really that good, I seriously would just switch out my 8800 GTX for a pair of 8800GTs.  SLI w/2 8800 GTX was out of the question because of the potential heat problems and a 750w power supply would be too much for the electric bill.

Coming as a slightly lower end product than the Ultra version, the GeForce 8800 GT, codenamedG92/D8P, will dissipate around 110 watts. Which is really good news as it will take only a single slot active cooling system in order to keep the GT operating at reasonable temperatures.

Core 2 Duo E6600 OC to 3.5GHZ (my FSB > yours)
4 gigs of OCZ dominator pc6400 ram @ 924 MHZ
evga nforce 680i sli MB
crappy old Live! 24 bit soundcard, it does 5.1 just fine though
8800 GTXs in SLI
samsung 206 bw lcd monitor, cheap and fast (2 ms) 3000:1

distinguished mentally-challenged looking ram, but it overclocks like crazy.

This is what it looked like at night before I snipped as many of those queer leds off as I could, looks like pussy repellent.

I have a DVI to HDMI cable running to my hdtv, and a dvi cable running into the next room for my monitor, and the audio split between home theater and 5.1 headphones. Which makes it awesome for downloading and watching HDrips and playing games either on the comfort of my couch, or in my shitty chair when my kid is hogging the tv. Soon Ill be able to use my iphone as a remote for my computer, which will be some cool star trek level shit.

I had a dramatic week filled with fun total hardware failure last week. My file server is dead along with the mb of my desktop pc. At least no data was lost. I went out and ordered a 8800 gts online, a purchase that I kind of regret since I barely play pc games (or games at all) anymore. I think I shoud had went for a mac mini or something. I used to be a big hardware freak, but now its been two weeks since having no main machine except for my laptop, and I realised It would be a waste of money to build a giant gaming pc again.

I think i'm just going to return that 8800 gts but it might end up being so much fucking trouble considering i bought it online from british columbia, for fucks sake.
