Puzzle Quest impressions
« on: October 11, 2007, 02:25:46 AM »
I assume the 360 version is identical to the soon to be released PC version.  I haven't put a ton of time into the game yet (maybe about 2-3 hours), but I've played enough to point out some differences with the previously released PSP version.  The DS version was a piece of shit and it shall not be mentioned here.

Let's get the superficial shit out of the way.  The excellent soundtrack is still in place.  Probably one of the best soundtracks this year.  There's not a whole lot to it (budget game and all), but what's there isn't of the lesser quality you'd expect from a ghetto game.  The visuals have translated very well to the big screen.  Earlier today I mistakenly said that the game had a sort of SOTN box around it, but I was incorrect, the game is all full screen, and it's very sharp looking.

The AI appears to have been tweaked.  Even though the creator of the game insisted that the AI never cheated, and that its insane efficiency was a result of a smallish AI algorithm, it seems that he went back to the code and made it a smidgen dumber.  It used to be that if there was a wildcard on the screen, AI would go for it 100% of the time, never miss it.  If there was a skull combo, same behavior (though a wildcard would be taken over skulls if both were present on the board).  Now, the AI, while still efficient, more often "misses" skulls and wildcards.  It's enough of a change that veterans of the original will notice it.  It's a welcome change.  I could definitely not play the PSP version for 2 to 3 hours without snapping the system in half.

What HASN'T been tweaked is the sometimes frustrating gem falling behavior.  It shows no sign of change at all, and it still seems to enjoy FUCKING THE PLAYER IN THE ASS.  It's a good thing I can't snap my TV in two out of frustration in this case.

Some skills have a cooldown now.  That sounds like it might alleviate some midgame issues, when the game gets pretty darned easy, but they sort of missed the mark here.  The cooldown is only for a scant few skills, and none of the skills I have now that have a cooldown are particularly desirable skills.  I can still quickly amass mana and repeatedly fireball cheese my opponent to death.  In short, the cooldown (so far) is only for not very useful skills, whereas the skills that are abusable can still be abused like stupid bitch housewives.

Companions work now.  I am pretty certain that I got a bonus quest because I had an active companion, a quest I don't think I got in the PSP version.  I never heard that the companion bug in the PSP version locked out content, but I don't remember that one quest at all.  Their powers, while clearly too "small" to be of use later in the game, are pretty helpful early on.

Haven't tried multi yet.  Demi needs to get his cigarillo ass online.

Bitches need to be nabbin' this game.  I have no problem paying for it twice, and I will probably pay for it a third time later this month, when it hits the PC.  I want it on my laptop.  It's one of the best games of the year, and I am glad it's become something of a sleeper hit, because there's plenty of room for improvement in the potential sequel.  This version is superior to the PSP version; more playable due to the AI tweak.  Better than any game Nintendo has ever made, to be sure.

Gamersgate has Puzzle Quest PC for download, $20.

I'm holding out for Steam because I want to be able to take any given machine and turn it into a puzzlestation (Chuzzle/Bookworm Adventures/Peggle/Puzzle Quest) in an hour with just my Steam userid/password.

The PSP version would fuck the player in the ass. Basically the AI had the uncanny luck of getting good drops from the top on their turn to do massive chain damage.

Ah, okay. I thought he meant there was some inconsistency in the way the pieces fell, or something.

I'm downloading the demo right now (and Conan). I liked the PC demo, we'll see if I like it on my TV.

Much like the original AI< I don't think the gem dropping is "cheating."  It's probably just a very straightforward algorithm, and when you get efficiency, sometimes you end up with some side effects that aren't always good.

the game does seem a bit easier this time around...  which is a good thing, and if you haven't noticed there are now 3 difficulty levels (easy, normal, hard).  the graphics are nice in HD but the colors are so vivid that i turn color blind after a while.  soundtrack is great but it wears thin after a while... not a big deal w/ 360 custom soundtracks. :)  overall i'm happy.

I think I got my fill on this with the DS.

The only reason I am 1/2 way wanting to check this out again on X360 or PSP is because everyone says the DS game is so gash....

Is it worth taking a look?

It really is better off on portable, but the bugs, while not gamebreaking, are still a drawback. I wasted at least an hour or two just on Puzzle Quest to make the the trips on train or plane much quicker.

This game rocks. I played the trial version for about a half hour and subsequently bought the full game. So simple. So awesome. So addictive. :rock

I love Puzzle Quest so much that Halo 3 sits next to my 360, unplayed.

I don't know why I hated it SO much on the DS (shuttupayouface Doug) - well, yes I do. I didn't give it a chance.

Looking forward to playing co-op with the little lady soon. I wish co-op was online too!

Best XBLA title yet. It gets a little annoying when the computer lands chain after chain and shuts you out, but the game's laissez faire approach to death makes it not so awful. The Vampire Bat is a GINAT FUCKFACE PIECE OF SHIT, though.

Game is fucking awesome, I am gonna purchase this next weekend methinks, along with Assault Heroes or Eets.

What are everyone's favorite XBLA games? I've been pretty slack about purchasing full games, even though I keep reasonably up to date with the demos.

According to what it says on the little blurb on XBLA, it does. But I've yet to try it out and I don't see how it would work.

The music's alright, but it gets a bit tiring if you're doing every quest you come across.
Level 30 now and still haven't reached the Mechataur. Starting to beat most of the regular enemies without thinking now, but some wankers like sandworms, can be tricky from time to time.

Yeah, I may have gushed about the music a bit too much.  There are only like 2 songs in the game, but they are really good songs!  I turned to my MP3s after a bit of play.  Sadly, this has fallen off my radar over the past week.  No reason, just been busy and spread thin.  I may try to give it a go after trying out Katamari, finishing Hot Fuzz, finishing season 1 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, DLing and trying the new version of Mythos, and possibly giving NWN2 Expansion a try if the new Obsidian-quality terrible gameplay elements have been fixed by fans.

Its been a long, long time since I have been addicted to a puzzle game but I have returned.

Dugog that two headed orc guy kicked my ass, I went off and leveled up and kicked his ass thanks to the spell flaming skulls (turns green pieces into skulls), my character is a wizard of sorts. Beat many a quest past this and I think I'm around level 19 cant remember atm.

I love the minigame where you capture enemys and the one where you mix items as well. I cannot for the life of me beat the puzzle for "regeneration" (troll healing spell) or "charm" (harpie spell that turns skulls into life points)

both are ranked at very hard and its no joke...

anyone wish to try an xbox live match late tommorow? Im interested in seeing how I fare. It seems every match I join has some super lvl 50 I cannot even think to try against
