ORANGE BOX IS FUN! (no tech talk)
« on: October 11, 2007, 02:13:35 PM »
Lets talk about the game and quit wringing hands.

TF2 is fucking sex. Its been so long since i've enjoyed the stupid fun of a game of Team Fortress. I mean I played a lot of BF2 and such but thats all so technical. Nothing can replace the experience of taking a defensive position and unloading a chaingun on a group of over-zealous players. Oh cutting them down was so awesome. Muhahaha. Then I died to a medic :(

Portal is awesome. It honestly kinda freaked me out. I mean you have to constantly think 'ok where the fuck am I' cause there's reflective surfaces all around so you leave a portal while watching yourself enter a portal, and the portals sometimes cycle between different rooms and argh. I havent even played that much, maybe 5 minutes, but its awesome.

I started HL2 again, and I AM DETERMINED not to fall flat at the awful ravenholm area again. I WILL SURVIVE!

I wish every game was actually 5 games for the price of 1.

Team Fortress 2 is awesome.  I am going to double dip and get this for the PC, because I'm not sure how long the shelf life of a team-oriented game with XBL gamers is going to be.  If my first few matches are any indication, it might just be something I play with friends and forum-goers, with my random matches going to the PC.

I'm playing through Half-Life 2: Episode One before I tackle Episode Two.  I never played Episode One, as I was holding off for this bargain and to be quite honest, I'm find it quite a chore.  I really, really dug Half-Life 2.  It's a great game.  But Episode One feels like chapters that were cut out of it for a reason.

Then I'm going to tackle Portal and Episode Two, which I hear really make the bundle worth it.  Looking forward to those two.

I think the main problem is TF2 is competing with Halo 3 on XBox which has more of a legacy and is from what I hear, a bit more stable netcode wise. I stick to the Seattle servers mostly cause I get a good ping from them and they are in my time zone :)

TF2 makes class differences meaningful by removal of grenade spam, that's the biggest change IMO. I like it and feel that the game really does reward teamwork more than it does in TFC and that Valve really did a great job with a "less can be more" design. The maps are really good and the game flows at just the perfect pace, and never loses focus on team play while never overly penalizing the skill of one individually great player.

It's also VERY accessible, and is easy to pick up and play.

Portal is a brilliant design in a very sexy package. I expect to be playing usermade portal maps for years, if there was any one real compelling reason to get the PC revision, that fact would be it.

"We Don't Go to Ravenholm..." is a real hit or miss for some people. It is a surivial horror area, and that's a very love/hate thing for a lot of people ( I personally enjoyed it, though the respawning in places is whack.)

Were any of you assholes big TFC fans? I want to know how TF2 stacks up against TFC or the rest of the TF series.

Engineers > all

I used to play Quake TF back in the day.  I never got into TFC as much because I was in college when it came out.  I toyed with it, and I liked what I played, but I just didn't have the time to devote myself to a multiplayer game.

I like TF2 a lot, but it feels more like a totally different game than a sequel to either of the previous TFs.  The pacing is a bit different, a bit faster, and it changes the feel immensely for me.  Again, I like it a lot, but I don't really have the time to get into it as much as I'd like.

people who are playing portal, how is the storyline?

Very tongue-in-cheek dark humor that gets progressively more weird/darker as the story progresses. The writing itself is superb and the lines are delievered in an incredibly perfect computer-generated droll tone.

There is a small link back to the Half-Life universe, but it's not major (or at least, not yet).

That's the rumor. I haven't played Episode 2 myself (replaying all of HL2/EP1 first), so there might be some hints in there about it.

I did a quick google search and found this -

Quote
Kikizo: You've said that Portal exists in the Half-Life universe. And there are already some crossovers. Can you tell us about when we might learn more about the Aperture Science Center, will it come into play within the current iteration of the Half-Life series?

Gabe: You will learn more about it; whether or not it shows up like in Episode 3 or in a different vehicle, we'll definitely learn more. It's part of our universe. You can tell that when you play through it, there's a lot of affection at Valve for those characters, especially for Gladys, the computer voice.

That's probably where the rumor started.

Revenholm was like a survival horror game where the controls werent part of the horror. Poison head crabs and superfast zombies up the stress factor a ton, and the crazy reverend guy was pretty entertaining. It was a nice timeout from the constant onslaught of the city17 soldier warfare, and got back to the headcrab/zombie roots of the original Half Life without being redundant. I loved it. Once you are out you get into the more open spaces, the buggy on the highway, and the best part of the game IMO in the assault on Nova Prospect.

Im not a big fan of the citadel levels in either HL2 or EP1, the game play just isnt as varied or fun, but the level design, puzzles, and look are still outstanding. I wont talk about EP2 even though I really wanna, you guys need to get your asses in gear. Ill just say that EP2 is wholly engrossing, and moves the story along a great deal. Its the best game in the package, and that saying a lot.

Portal was a complete surprise, it was a lot more fun than I thought it was going to be. It is genuinely disorienting, the concept is so simple, yet really addicting. I ended up playing it start to finish in one setting after Ep2, it was too fun and funny to put down, and I really wanted to know the connection to HL2. Which ended up being pretty minimal, but not really disappointing given how "worth it" the game itself is. Its written by the same cats that did Psychonauts, which is another truly funny game. The scrawling on the wall, the ending song, what the final boss says to you as you fight it, I was loling far more in Portal than any game Ive played before.

TF2 is just genius, it too is really funny, has a ton of charm and atmosphere, and classes that are easy to pick up and play yet have some depth should you decide to take the time to learn them. Ive found that even on public servers with 16 v 16 teams still somehow manage to come together, sometimes thanks to bitchy people on the mic, but i think mostly because the best way to climb the scoreboard is to play your class the way it was intended. The maps are really well designed, and offer plenty of variety, Granary and well are kinda similar, but other than that the flows and objectives are different enough to keep it interesting.

The custom maps are already rolling out, and Ive played some really good ones.

O, and spies are fucking gay.  :maf

ps about portals story and relation to HL

The objective of EP3 is this thing called 'Borealis", you dont learn much about it, but supposedly its a technology that is made by Apperature.

I don't have any experience with the PC version, but the console version seems to have little bugs creeping up all over the place -- in the menus, in the matchmaking rooms, strange graphical glitches in-game -- and severe lag issues at times.  The controls aren't exactly condusive to a game as fast paced as TF2, but there isn't anything there that makes it unplayable.  The default look sensitive is VERY low -- change it immediately.

By the way, is it possible to get to the balcony on 2fort with a rocket jump?  I'm sure the promo videos are greatly exaggerating rocket jumping, but I can't seem to get much more than a foot or two over regular jumping (which already feels like jumping with concrete shoes).  This is basic stuff.  What the hell am I doing wrong?

TF2 is one of those situations where it's not bad on XBL, especially in comparison to other team-oriented games offered for the platform (in fact, it's one of the best), but it's definitely going to be better on PC.  It's a fun experience on Xbox 360, especially with friends, but it's an awesome experience on the PC.

The lag was problematic for me yesterday - not so much today, though.  Still having problems, Billy?

I played some games last night with HORRIBLE lag and some that ran perfectly.  It might have more to do with idiots on Live who don't understand that their connection is far too shit for them to be hosting matches.

And why the -fuck- is there not a latency gauge?  If my tits are getting frosty, I would at least like to see if everyone else is getting fucked as well.

I think it's definitely based on who is hosting.  Been playing with one of my East Coast buddies this afternoon and I've been having a blast.

Beat Episode One.  It's kind of underwhelming; the second half of that episode makes it worth playing, but in general, it's kind of mediocre.

I'm on the 15th or 16th room in Portal and - MY GOD! - what an awesome game.  Portal needs to be a franchise... STAT.

I played a game last night on Dustbowl where I went 58 and 13 with a defending Spy, including 8 dominations.  By the end of the game, they were spending more time blasting the shit out of each other than assaulting the control points.  8)

--

People who know sentry placement can be serious motherfuckers on 2Fort.  I played a 6 on 6 game last night where 2 engies camped the flag, one with a sentry on the desk and another with a sentry in the opposite corner.  Spy infiltration is futile because the engies are going to lay into anyone who goes in there. The demoman can't wall bounce pipebombs far enough to reach the desk sentry.  And a heavy/medic team apparently isn't invul long enough to take out both.  Best perceived strategy?  Bore them to death.

I played quite a bit last night, but yeah the 2Fort game I was in had a pretty long stand-off. Not that it was boring, its just they were all caught up in the middle dying ;-)

Im getting better with Heavy tho, medic or not I can still cause some damage. Depending on invulns is kinda useless considering how slow a heavy moves. I mean the only time an invuln is useful to me is if im already in a fight lol.

The aiming is way off (at least in the 360 version).  If you don't time it to split second precision, blam elevator broken.  Plus, shooting energy balls at the debris worked for the first couple of pieces, but not the last one, and it took me forever to figure out what I had to do.  Needlessly frustrating.

The whole thing so far is basically just a fetch puzzle, and Alyx is kind of annoying in this one where she was never annoying in HL2.

Maybe it gets better.

I think Alyx and EP1 really pick up after you get out of that stupid citadel. She is much more useful, and adds to the level of immersion as she behaves in a pretty realistic manner. At least, far more so than any other cpu companion ive ever played with. Little things, like her squinting when you shine your flashlight in her face, or when you crouch to stare at her crotch for too long, she has interesting reactions.

I have not enjoyed one single minute of EP1.  Fetch quest, traps rigged to kill you on the first try every time, annoying sidekick, annoying puzzles.  What a complete 180 from HL2.

And now I can't get through the goddamned gunship fight in the hospital attic without Alyx dying.  She can't be told to stay in the fucking corner out of the line of fire, she runs right behind your every step, and every single motherfucking time she gets shot by the ship and killed.  I'm seriously so fucking frustrated right now I came within an inch of kicking the shit out of my 360.  I've been playing this same fucking bit for 30 minutes straight, over and over and over.

wow thanks for spoilers

No story spoilers.  She's not supposed to die, that was the point.  I've seen her stand directly on top of an exploding grenade and not die, yet at this one point someone flipped a switch and she went from indestructible granola girl into a hippie chick with bones like eggshells.

I finally lucked into getting past that part and finished EP1.  Hated it.  Episode 2, on the other hand, is awesome so far.  All killer no filler.
