our initial impressions are: It's Smash Brothers, and it's fun.

QUALIFY THAT SHIT! SAYING THE TITLE OVER AGAIN AND SAYING ITS FUN DOES NOT = IMPRESSIONS

YEAHRHGHGHH!

They did say they didnt care for the controls and longed for the gamecube controller, but then made that irrelevant by saying the games controls 'will get the benefit of the doubt'

Isn't it GC controller compatible to begin with anyways? I'm gonna try classic and GC, and see which one I like better. I don't like using the Wiimote turned horizontally to play games (like for Super Paper or TG16/NES VC games), nor do I think the Nunchuck/Wiimote combo would work well for this game.

Wii classic controller = best game controller ever.

there was this awesome gaf thread in which a nintendumb lamented the inability of his real-world peers to understand the earthshaking significance of sonic's appearance in the new smash brothers

it made him feel alone in the world

it's too bad that the internet provides these folks with a community and checks the salutary effects of shame and isolation

this thread would have delivered if it was gaf instead of gamespot.  here's a quality quote for the day:

Quote
Nintendo is already the king of downloadable games by default... But if they pull manage to shape up Wii ware (Which it seems like they are) there's no way PSN or XBLA can catch up this gen.

Are there any real mechanics changes in SSBB or is it just new graphics, levels, and characters with an online mode?

they've admitted a washed-up sega mascot into their loathsome stable of washed-up nintendo mascots -- that's an innovation

Controls: There are four preset control schemes -- GameCube controller, Classic controller, Wii Remote, and Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Most Smash Bros. pro-hopefuls will probably gravitate towards the GameCube controller, especially if they're stuck in their Melee ways. The Classic controller offers nearly the same experience, with the right analog stick acting as the yellow c-stick on the GameCube controller and shielding mapped to the shoulder buttons, but obviously lacking the rumble (an important feature to some).

Given the lack of buttons, the Wii Remote-only preset, which you play with the remote held horizontally, uses Up on the D-pad for jump and the 1 and 2 buttons for attacks. While the Up for jump setting is a slight nuisance, the shield button, which you have to hit with your middle finger behind the remote as it's mapped to the B trigger, is probably the most awkward part about the remote-only control scheme. But, regardless of which controller you have access to, Brawl will have a fully customizable control scheme, allowing you to map actions to any button you want on any controller, which you then can save to your profile. Conceivably, this could narrow the gap between the different controller setups.

what other game is best played with the controller from a last gen (well, even-more-last-gen) system? innovation!

Well, you can use the GameCube controller in the final game.
