Or don't.  The new translation is, at best, a mixed bag (I find it forced and I don't like it at all), and the gameplay just simply doesn't hold up.  SRPGs have been done better to the degree that this game is worth skipping, especially when voting for this with your dollars will just mean that Square Enix keeps cranking out unambitious, unimproved ports of their older games that are probably best left to nostalgia.

Afternoon of Darkness is out at the end of the month.  I suggest going for that instead.  If you want a Square game you probably haven't played, Front Mission is out for the DS later this month, and unlike this port, that's a remake.

I actually downloaded it but I alluded to that on GAF (don't want to outright state I downloaded a quick port of a game that doesn't warrant a new game pricetag).

I'm really happy I didn't shell out my hard earned money for it. I'm happy I'm playing it again but some of the technical fuckups when it comes to slowdown and musical glitches makes me wonder what play testers actually do at work.

Don't worry about the "voting with your dollars" effect.  I'm pretty sure SE made a blood pact with whatever Tose team did this and Valkyrie Profile PSP and FF5/6/CT PS.  They have to keep contracting them for shitty port work until the end of time, whether anyone buys them or not.

Alright, in that case, I agree with you.  I did the same thing.  I played with it for a few days, and I was also glad I didn't pay for it.

EDIT:  The thing is, we know that Tose isn't all bad.  I'm sure that porting old games to slightly better hardware (well, significantly better, but not so much greater that straight emulation is easy) isn't that easy.  The port is apparently much better than the crappy jappy original PSP port.

It could be SE's fault for being cheapskates with time/budget.  Thing is they were obviously willing to put some resources into other aspects (cutscenes, voice acting, new stuff, translation which shows effort whether you like the result or not) so I dunno.

Which boggles my mind honestly. The game is very uneven with the slowdown and degraded sound. I mean, the game is perfectly fine when I summon Shiva, very visually intensive sequence and yet when I cast Tailwind which brings about a small green cloud that envelopes a character, causes the game to slow down. Da fug?

And I'm still lauging at the deathcry of enemies within the game. It sounds muffled, you've got to hear it.

Alright, in that case, I agree with you.  I did the same thing.  I played with it for a few days, and I was also glad I didn't pay for it.

I think I would have bailed on the game if the slowdown was worse than the US version :/

TVC: Front Mission DS is not a remake, it's a port of Front Mission 1 for the PS1.

I believe FFT PSP has more extra content than FM DS does.

edit:sorry I got consoles mixed up there.

The PS1 version was a remake though, and I've never heard of any technical issues with either the PS version or the PS -> DS conversion.

I love the new translation so far.  It's stylistic while remaining easy to read and the story makes sense now.  The slowdown sucks but I can live with it.  I planned on playing straight through without doing any random battles besides the ones from backtracking to get to new missions and I have so far but some of the battles are just annoying rez-fests when your characters have 65 hp and a white mage is able to lightning your characters for 45.

They can get pretty tense though, with the crystal countdown system.  I remember a really fun battle that hinged on who could get to an enemy's crystal first.  There are a lot of subtle points of strategy in the game that you're missing out on if you just grind your way through.

I can't stand grinding in strategy games so I've almost always tried to play straight through.  It's the thing that's kept me from loving Disgaea, I think.  I'm much more suited for a game like Fire Emblem.

I have to admit though that FFT is just barely playable without grinding (including screwing around performing random actions for JP after the enemy is down to one goblin cowering in the corner under the heading of "grinding" here) and, while there's deeper strategy in the game than most people realize, it also can come down to luck sometimes.  Maybe you should compromise a bit and just fight one extra random battle per story battle or something.

I've played through the game without grinding before.  At least not grinding after doing a little in chapter 1.  Chapter 1 has two problems.  The NPCs that make up 2/6 of your party aren't controlled by you so you have to charge with them to have even numbers or hold back, watch them die quick deaths, and pick apart the enemy.  The other is that the squire/chemist jobs are bad.  Squires can't wear the armor knights can so for a frontline fighter they have shit for health (65 compared to 105) and chemists can't do anything except use potions or phoenix downs from short range.

edit: There are a couple places in the game that are a bitch underleveled.  One is a one on one fight that you can cheat through using yell.  The other is a castle rooftop battle.

there is one that's FUCK hard, before the battle they are going to execute someone or something like that.

I think gafgarion appears in that fight iirc.

That's probably the peak of legitimate (i.e. not counting the one-on-one nonsense) difficulty in the game.

i have this game but i havent opened it yet - I never got to play the origonal so the port action doesnt bother me. Regardless I enjoyed the ports/remakes of FFI and FFII for PSP.

Am I reading here that they didnt do a straight white boy english translation, but instead its all "art thou" ish?

There's some clips available online...it's not "thee" and "thou", but they do make it sound a bit faux-archaic.

Damn you people with your modded PSPs. I actually don't even have a PSP, I'm just being jealous.

The other is a castle rooftop battle.

i didn't think the wiegraf/velius battle was so bad, but the rooftop fight with elmdor and celia/lede is AWFUL. charm bracelet is an instant kill on any character, even orlandu. i went through the whole game without grinding UNTIL that fight, where i promptly got fuck pwned.

I just played it 10 times until I got lucky, swearing the entire time.  I would have lost 2 levels of progress just to be able to grind which completely kills my motivation to play a game.
