Real Talk: Franchises need to follow Doctor Who's example of a "relaunch"

I can think of one major franchise (Star Trek) that could do with ten or so years off. Honestly, what the BBC did with Doctor Who (even the TV movie in the 90's to test the water) has been brilliant. They took a show that was milked dry off of the air and WAITED INTELLIGENTLY until they saw they could relaunch the series with an interest. Even better, it is still in the continuity of the old series, so that all of that didn't basically mean nothing to a new audience, and it spurs interest in the older series as well, which could benefit DVD sales.

I think a lot of franchises could do this, especially Star Trek. Hell, even ER, which still gets decent ratings but has definitely jumped the shark, could do this and return a few years later. This is what I hope happens to Stargate eventually as well.

the only reason i'm interested in the star trek-movie--i hate both the series and the movies--is because of the cast.

The cast is good, but I'm pretty sure there's been some awesome in Trek before.

Actually, after the movie in the 90s, they could have revived the show.  The interest was there and the ratings were there.  What wasn't there was Fox, the co-production partner.  The movie didn't do hot in America (of course), and Fox wasn't interested in giving it a shot because they had SLIDERS which also featured time and dimensional travel.  So there you go.  We went a decade without Who because of fucking SLIDERS.

Anyway, Trek is the easy pick, what with it being a similarly campy and followed genre show.  Personally, I'd like to see the X-Files get a similar revival in a few years.  Do it with new agents, no Mulder or Scully as leads, and change up the premise to match the times.

I think the cornerstone of an X-Files relaunch would be to shitcan the series arc mythology, and move to the more workable, easier to plan (and change) season arc format popularized by Buffy and what not.

YES. And Hercules too. Both shows got extremely shitty when they tried to mix in other mythologies and shit. Not to mention the directing and writing was fucking horrible in the later seasons.

Even with a new movie, it's about time for the X-Files to come back. I agree though, if the movie is successful, they should think about a new series.
