DISCUSS.

Do they have a new type of Zaku or something? Because those mechs at the beginning are AWESOME.

Welp. I've seen the first episode of Gundam 00 and I have to say, that I'm impressed. It shows promise.

+ Character designs. Some of the characters have this old school anime look to them, and I just love that.
+ Mech designs. Holy crap are these some of the best Gundam mech designs in ages.
+ It's got a Gundam Wing vibe, in that there's a SHIT load of Gundam's and Gundam pilots.
+ The main characters are TERRORISTS.
+ Great animation, at least so far. It's not spotty like in Seed Destiny.
+ The cast SEEMS interesting.
+ HARO HARO HARO

- It didn't introduce characters as well as it could have like in past Gundams. For example, the first episode of Gundam Wing is one of my favorite first episodes because it introduces characters in the best manner possible, with excellent direction. The original Gundam, Seed, 0080, 08th MS, Z... they all have great first episodes that pull you into the plot and sympathize for the characters IMMEDIATELY. I dunno who the characters in 00 *are*, much less their names.

I might have to watch it again, or they may go through the important characters and who they are next time. But still, as far as first episodes go, this is one of the weakest I've seen for Gundam.

- Too many acronyms and organizations thrown around for a first episode. At times I had a lil trouble following.
- Directon was a little spotty, and confusing at times.
- The names are lame. Celestial Being? Gundam Meisters? Why does that guy say Hallelujah? lol

Overall, based off of the first episode, it shows promise. If you are a Gundam fan who was absolutely smitten by the the worst Gundam series ever, Seed Destiny, then you should probably give this a chance; chances are that A. it can't get worse than that, B. This one doesn't have the stress of having to followup one of the best Gundam series yet, and C. it doesn't have the same cast from a previous Gundam mixed in with new characters, creating balance issues.

There are no Zakus. Gundam 00 takes place in our future (AD calendar).

The guy says Hallelujah because that's the name of one of the Gundam pilots.

Is episode two out yet? I can't wait for more HD Gundam goodness on the TV!

I watched the first episode but since I'm also watching Victory Gundam I decided to stop watching 00 and just catch up after I finish Victory.

I have decided the mecha designs are awesome, color schemes aside. The Kyrios has a cool transformation and I like that each Gundam seems to have been designed for a specific task (like the Gundam, Guncannon, and Guntank in the original series).

This show owns. I'm REALLY starting to warm up to it.

The mechs are amazing, some of the best I've seen in years.

The action is GREAT too. The animation gets me pumped.

Extremely impressed with episode 2 of Gundam 00. After episode 1 I wasn't so sure about the series but it did show promise. However, episode 2 definitely confirms this. As long as it doesn't somehow lose steam, this should end up being a pretty good series.

My only problem so far are the characters. They just aren't that interesting (so far).

The action and mobile suits are done extremely well. The mobile suits in particular are giving me a nerd boner. I love how they all have their own uses like in the original series. You've got a Gundam that acts as a sniper, a Gundam that acts as an enormous Gun Tank but lacks mobility, a Gundam that is missle based and can transform into a jet, the main character's Gundam that is sword based and agile... The great thing is that the enemies have this sort of variety as well, with their own takes on the classic Gun Tank and among other classic Mobile Suit types.

Another thing that's great about Gundam 00: the politically charged plot. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not reall recall a Gundam that has been this political this early in the series. It has no problem just going off and being political right out of the gate and I have a big feeling that this will be a Gundam series that changes fan expectations. It's not exactly standard Gundam fare thus far. Terrorists? Destroying military bases on the second episode? I got a Gundam Wing vibe based off of the first episode, but they've taken that and diverged into something completely different and unexpected. There's no colony crutch as of now, it's all on Earth. For long time Gundam fans this is amazing news. The story overall, is pretty fucking fresh for Gundam in general and you can tell the writers actually want to try something new with the series. Bravo for the new Gundam, it may make me forget about that abortion that was Seed Destiny yet.

Additional great shit: it seems they don't reuse the animation like in Wing and Seed! That same attack but with a different background bullshit seems to be over! HOPEFULLY!

Oh yeah, another great thing about 00! It doesn't star teenagers who randomly find some Gundam and become ace pilots! It seems all of the main characters have experience in war and are all at least 20 - 25 years old.

Thus far there's only 4 (5 if you include that RX-87 at the beginning of ep1?) Gundam's. Let's hope they don't go overboard and have Gundam's for all sides this time. Since Graham can handle Setsuna with his Mobile Suit just fine it seems, I can only hope they keep it this way. IT'S ENTIRELY POSSIBLE FOR THE ENEMIES TO KICK ASS WITHOUT BEING IN GUNDAM'S YOU KNOW. UC proves this!

Last thing that I can think of is that since the show has character's saying how full of shit Celestial Being is in the first episode, chances are we won't have to deal with a typical OH GUYS WE WERE WRONG LET'S CHANGE SIDES AND TEAM UP half way through the series. So far there's also no sign of a Relena or Lacus. That is wonderful news!

I haven't watched episode two yet, so I just skimmed through your post. There are five Gundams, at the least in this universe. We've yet to see Unit 04, unless it's the one that saved Setsuna in the first episode's prologue.

Well, if it's GN-00, then there are two unknown Gundams floating out there. The Celestial Being Gundam Meisters pilot units GN-01, GN-02, GN-03 and GN-05.

GN-00 and GN-04 remain mysteries.

Well, it depends on exactly what you want out of Gundam. Do you want World War II-inspired mecha action? Do you want something more philosophical and anti-war? Do you want some cheesy-funny retro '70s-style robot action? Do you just want lots of explosions and kewl-looking Gundams blowing shit up?

There's a lot of series and most of them can be watched independently of each other (each either taking place in their own universe or dealing with unrelated characters/conflicts in the same universe).

Let us know your tastes and then we can recommend where you should start off.

Mobile Suit Gundam (original movie trilogy, the TV show is dub only)
Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (short OAV series, cheap box set available)
Gundam: The 8th MS Team (OAV series, cheap box set available)
Gundam: MS Igloo (upcoming CG series, hasn't come out in the US yet)
Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory (OAV series, cheap box set available)

Somewhat more "philosophical" and with a strong anti-war theme:

Turn A Gundam (fansub only)

YouTube's blocked at work, what Gundam is that from?

I remember during the opening space colony invasion sequence in Gundam F91, one of the spent shells from a mobile suit's weapon hits a young mother carrying her baby and kills her. It was really sad and unexpected. A similar thing happens in the first few episodes of Victory Gundam. It's like Yoshiyuki Tomino (who directed both) was saying "Oh, you enjoy big battles and lots of violence and destruction, right? It's entertainment, right? Well, this is the type of thing that actually happens in that situation. It's not just OMG KEWL TECHNOLOGY OMG EXPLOSIONS"

0079 was the first Gundam series and it aired in 1979, so the animation is quite dated, yet it's still good. It's charming.

There are good points about oldschool anime though. For one thing, it's A LOT better than current anime. You can tell who's male and who's female, there's no EMO shit going on, and the stories aren't convoluted. Oldschool anime is a treat.

New ep is out.

I'm really liking this show. Despite Setsuna being the main character, it seems pretty balanced. Also, it's great to see the whole "only a Gundam can damage a Gundam" thing not featured in 00. That commie pilot's mobile suit almost WRECKED Setsuna. When he and Graham get better mobile suits, it's ON.

The world view and politics emphasis doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon, and I don't mind that.

PS: The guy who plays the Commie plays Snake in MGS.

I don't know, Mizushima is the same guy who directed Fullmetal Alchemist, so he's not afraid to kill off big characters. Maybe he isn't dead, but it sure seemed that way with the shot of his cockpit, and then him missing from the final shot in the ED.

edit: Damn, sounds like he survived, but is now blind. I was really hoping that we'd see one of the pilots die.
