I mean Oasis, of course.

Between Radiohead, Blur, Manic Street Preachers, and Pulp, all routinely killing shit, why was it Oasis?  WHY?  Aside from the general stupidity of the young American audience.

All of Oasis' songs sound the same. I prefer Keane cause they tried something different with their second CD and it was actually better than their first as in NO EMO

Oasis sounds safe. Blur was extremely varied in their output, and Pulp and the Manics were just TOO BRITISH.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I LOVE BLUR. LOVE THE MANICS. AND I FUCKING LOVE JARVIS AND PULP AND COMPANY MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF. They just didn't resonate with Americans for many reasons. The main one that they were just too British, while Oasis took the safe route and made music that was easily accessible to mainstream audiences worldwide.

I've seen Blur and Pulp live, I wish the Manics would come back :-(

I can do the big Oasis singles. I'll cop to that.  Outside of the singles, though, I think the only band worse with filler material that sounds too similar is Smashing Pumpkins (sorry distant!  Not trolling, I swear!)

Agreed.  I had Morning Glory in my car the other day and I just found myself going from Hello to Wonderwall to Champagne Supernova.  That's about it honestly.

I'd also like to raise this point (as I'm assuming we're coming from that same gaf thread):  Is Pink Floyd really as good as ever seemingly drugged out teenager says they are?  Honestly, I never understood the love they get.  I guess I can understand their contribution to rock, but honestly the way I see Pink Floyd is about the same way I view how the white trash America rocks out to Skynard and Halen.  Pink Floyd is much better than both, I know, but I just can't stand all this "DSOTM, OMG" talk.

DSOTM has some killer tunes.  The first 5 minutes of the album is great.  Great Gig in the Sky and Time are great.  Brain Damage and Eclipse are pretty great.  But really, if you can't dig the (pretty remarkable) production the album has, I can understand not digging it.

The only Floyd albums I could probably tolerate these days are Animals and Wish You Were Here, but they are both 20 minute space jam albums, again, not a field of music for everyone.  I have always found The Wall somewhat overwrought, but there are some good songs in there, and I don't mean Another Brick in the Wall.  What makes those particular songs difficult to recommend is that you really have to listen to the album as a cohesive, single piece, and that takes like 80 minutes, not all of them great.  The middle of disc 1 is probably the best part, but I can understand not appreciating the tunes without digging the slowish build from the beginning of the album.  After that bit, the album get famously dull for like. . .20 minutes or more, until Comfortably Numb comes in, and the whole rest is all good.

But for the most part?  Yeah, it's spectacle stoner rock.  But not without its angels.  You could do a lot worse than Pink Floyd.

And Van Halen was purty good up until 1984 or so.  Not a perfect run, but a lot of good rock music in there.  Again, you can do a lot worse out of early 80s rock bands.

I'm not denying that they are very good musicians and writers, and I have listened to Dark Side a couple times.  It just seems like people say they love Dark Side and Pink Floyd for the sake of saying they like Dark side and Pink Floyd.  Comfortably Numb, Great Gig in the Sky, and Shine on You Crazy Diamond is about as much Floyd I can handle.

Comfortably Numb's solo is indeed fucking awesome.  Easy too!

Oasis has sold a shitload more albums than Radiohead.  Like, a ton.  Radiohead are popular amongst hipsters, but their record sales aren't impressive on the big boards.  Radiohead has sold maybe 10-15 million records, Oasis has sold closer to 50 million.

Their best selling album in the US is OKC, at 2 million.  Kid A and Amnesiac sold about 1.3 million each.  Hail to the Thief didn't even go platinum.  Radiohead is the Ron Paul of popular music:  not that popular in reality.

Although, it was my dad, not me, that contributed to that album's sales. Also, Pablo Honey was the first Radiohead album I listened to because of him.

And I like it.

And Willco, it has sold over 4 million in both the UK and the US.

And also, TVC, isn't Oasis more popular (or used to be more popular) than those other bands in the UK as well? It's not just Americans. Modern-day equivalent: Coldplay.

If you ever meet a self professed Floyd fan that just rants on about DSOTM its because hes not really a Pink Floyd fan! What does it matter?  One Oasis album, worldwide, has outsold the entire Radiohead catalog worldwide.  It's a fair comparison.  Radiohead's last album didn't even go plat on either side of the Atlantic.  Oasis's last album went triple platinum.

Also, yes, Oasis is still popular in the UK, but I think that has as much to do as outliving their competition, largely.  And also not being a particularly adventurous band.

IIRC, Oasis was WAY WAY WAY before *NSYNC. *NSYNC hit it big in the U.S. in 1998, and in Europe a year or two before. ...Morning Glory was released way earlier.

I respectfully disagree. :) The early 90's music akin to *NSYNC was New Kids on the Block and then, later, Boyz II Men. I'm a sort of boyband authority because I liked a lot of them.

Although the typical fan age for such bands is probably around 14, so unless you were a really young fan of NKOTB and an older fan of *NSYNC, you probably weren't like obsessed with both bands. I liked NKOTB, but I was born in '85, so I was younger when they were popular. I loved Boyz II Men but I didn't know the names of the guys or anything, I just loved all their albums. I was just the right age to be obsessed with *NSYNC.

In the US, this is the order in which the Radiohead albums sold:

OK Computer > Pablo Honey > Kid A and Amnesiac (they sold about the same amount, Kid A a wee bit more) > HTTF > The Bends

Has anyone from a big-name band ever come forward about that?  I thought the people that had come forward were all nobodies.  Not saying it didn't happen, and even if Justin's skittle was diddled, I wouldn't expect him to publicly (or even in sealed court records) admit it, since it would, well, make him the biggest joke ever in high schools and shit.

Uhm, did you know the Backstreet Boys were all sexually molested by their manager, right?  So was Justin Timberlake, apparently.

Lou Pearlman. He and Transcontinental Records basically pioneered all the popular boy bands. BSB and *NSYNC both left him after they hit it really really big. I don't remember which band it was (or if it was both at different times) but there was some really nasty court and money stuff going on.

I agree.

Nick Carter's mom has been quoted saying he tried some funny shit with her son.

From what I understand of that woman though, she basically exploits her children and I'll take anything she says with a grain of salt. That said, Pearlman supposedly had sleepovers and stuff with the boys in the bands. The youngest guys (Nick Carter and Justin Timberlake) were seriously 14 and 15 when they were first starting out, so there's something seriously wrong with that.

Yeah, but he also has this image of macho guy that he needs to keep.  I mean, he beat the shit out of his little brother in one of his reality TV shows. :lol

Come to think of it, Pearlman probably molested the little bro as well.

I think it probably happened.  The odd thing is, the manager/creator of Menudo was also accused of doing the same thing, and he was actually arrested/convicted for it, as I recall.  Ricky Martin got raped. :(

What is it about these boy band managers? Sickos.
