Crash of the Titans - First Impressions
« on: October 14, 2007, 07:29:25 PM »
+Nice To Look At, the levels are really nice to look at.
+Greater focus on moves and character growth
+Monsters are fun to use
+Lots of personality
+Easy achievements, most are gained just through playing.
+40-50 dollars most places
+Has dumb l33t speak, which makes me lol.

-Some screen tearing, a bit of slowdown in some situations, and character models are uneven in their execution
-Maybe a little too easy or maybe just too accomodating
-Humor is good in spots, not so good in others

IN short its an easy platformer that does a good job focusing on Crash while still implementing a few ideas new to the series. I am only on the second world so far, and the boss of the first world was a weeeee bit challenging but even then, not so much. In some situations where there are multiple monsters its just too easy to hop from one to ther other with the mask, it sorta seems more like a really easy timing exercise. While the monsters are fun, I find the game the most challenging when Crash is on foot.

I do love how the achievements flow in. While the hardcore gamer athletes will scoff at this, the casual gamer in me appreciates the appropriate kudos for a normal playthrough.

Last Crash game I played was Wrath of Cortex on PS2, it was so damned hard! I retried one boss (I think it was the 2nd one  :-\) for two hours before I just gave up. Crash games arent meant to be that hard! Youre supposed to be moderately challenged but still have fun, then go for the gems if you wanna get hardcore

Nah not yet, I'll probably grab it once I finish Mother 3, been moving house and shit which equals bills so I been a bit short on $$$$$$$ I had better buy Luminous Arc quick as its an Atlus game. babies are crying that they didnt buy Etrian Odyssey when they had the chance now they are getting raped on ebay apparently. I get paid on Wed so I'll hit play-asia, scab a coupon code off GAF then order Luminous Arc with Touch Detective 2 1/2

I thought the original Touch Detective sucked?  I didn't buy it when I saw one of the characters looked like a shriveled penis.

I may get this, but honestly, I prefer my 3d platformers developed by hairy manimals from the southern hemisphere.

well technically it did suck, and yes your sidekick is a penis. (the game says its called funghi and is a mushroom character but he is extremely phallic). But Im a point and click adventure whore, and the storylines are so weird/twisted/pedo/filled with innuendo that the game is actually pretty enjoyable

Check it.  They even put the penis on the cover to the left of the protagonist. I'm not buying a game that has a dick as a sidekick.  That's a little TOO fucked up, even for me.

If I can rub penises and have them go unf unf it could very well end up on a possible year end list.

the noise the comes out of the speakers is sort of an unf unf as well, its pretty cool. This game also features: bizarre little girls who are obsessed with bananas, sick abduction/rape storylines, and the art and music are really good. You are making me want to buy this, penis and all.  I thought the consensus on GAF was that it was shitty.

Is it a tough game, or fairly easy?

GAF consensus = not a decent opinion most of the time. Anyway click the link above... the game IS shitty, but has its charm. I certainly enjoyed it and the game does have a following of sorts. Well the puzzles are basic, but often if you dont click the right pixel you might get stuck for a while (the game is unforgiving like that), so its kind of broken-hard.

I can't do tags, sorry :(  If I could, I would probably be moderating a lot more than I do now.

I am surprisingly tolerant when it comes to graphics adventures, so I could probably deal with it.  I was warned off of Hotel Dusk due to it being boring, the worst sin of all.  I can deal with short, stupid, cryptic, whatever if there's something entertaining to be found, especially in a portable game, but boring is the MIND KILLER.

Someone's been watching Dune. :heartbeat

I guess if I got really stuck due to the one pixel thing I could always look up a FAQ to see what I'm doing wrong.

How long is the game?  That's probably the deal-breaker for me...if it's a shitty-yet-charming game, I could probably deal with it as long as it didn't go on for longer than ten hours or so.

I feel like a scrub for admitting it, but as I have gotten older and I have completed fewer and fewer games year by year, I no longer feel shame about using FAQs.  I realize that completing a game using a FAQ is a marginally better use of my money than getting stuck and quitting.  This is especially true for genres as FAQ friendly as adventure games.  One of the reasons I like Telltale adventure games so much is that they really prioritize non-cryptic puzzles, even in franchises where such things are friendly, like Sam & Max.

oh, i have no qualms about hopping to a strat guide or gamefaqs when my one cardinal rule of old fuck gaming is violated: that i should never spend more than 30 minutes blocked on something. 30 minutes is a huge chunk out of my limited free time, and i don't want to spend it doodling around frustrated or reloading.

Eh, even 30 minutes is pushing it for me.  After MAF's warning about Eternal Sonata, the god damned second I got to that fort I pulled up an FAQ.  And then I used one throughout the rest of the game for Score Piece and EZI items because they got kind of obnoxious with hiding that shit sometimes.

I avoided FAQs for Tales of the World and it really screwed me over since I didn't know everything carried over for new game plus, as well as getting the ability to change difficulty (which causes new equipment to appear).  I should have just finished the game and restarted on new game plus at a harder difficulty to get the missing stuff, but at this point I don't have the patience for it. :/

I try to avoid FAQs as much as possible because I worry if I use FAQs for one section of the game, I'll succumb to temptation and keep going back to it.  The only exception is for Japanese games where I need to use translation-type stuff.

With a game as minor as Touch Detective I'd have no qualms using a FAQ if I got really stuck.

I would avoid FAQs for things with a high degree of replay value.  At least until the replay value was getting iffy.  Examples include Diablo clones (at least well done ones) and MMOs.  There are certain kinds of games where denying yourself experimentation is detrimental to the experience, and there are certain kinds of games where "get to the point" gaming is better.  For some people I guess.

I mean, for the past several years, I thought I was done with JRPGs.  Turns out that's really not the case.  Sometimes I just need a little prodding to get through the tedius bits that turn up in every JRPG.

See, I like rogue-like games, so I just kept playing the thing when I got near the end...I knew there was a new game plus feature, but I just figured it let you start the game with your levels intact.  I didn't realize that by changing the difficulty, you could get new/better equipment and stuff.  If I'd known that, I would just have finished the game and then raised up the difficulty to get moar stuff.

I still feel guilty whenever I look up something in a FAQ - like I shoulda been smart enough to figure it out by myself. :(

Nobody will ever know.  They got the localization team from Folklore to write the rest of her story, and she is apparently now a character in a soap commercial based on Picasso's Guernica or something.

having completed both Hotel Dusk and Touch Detective, I can safely say that Touch Detective is the better game. Its a lot snappier and fast moving than HD, and is nice and short too. Im guessing around 5 hours to complete?  For those puzzles where I missed a pixel I just resorted to a FAQ a couple of times, easy
