I downloaded the trail version since I've never played any of the iterations of this game. It took me about three plays to figure out what was going on....but then it just clicked. I don't know if 109 billion points is good or not (I'm guessing it isn't) but HOLY FUCK that rocked. BOUGHT.

yes, but I think a few of the levels on the PSP version are prettier..or at least have more variety, but I only tried two levels. 1500 chain tho OMG!

At first I thought it was too easy but then I realized its totally a score-hound game so I got over it.

to be honest, i'd be happy if they turned down the difficulty a notch.  the psp one was frustrating, especially since you had to go through every single level to unlock them.  really looking forward to this... in fact i think i'll head home during lunch to try it out.

PSP one was devious, but only had a few levels so I thought that was ok. I mean the boss fights were the best part. The X360 one is a lot of fun tho, especially the insane chain numbers.

the gaf impressions make this sound pretty awful -- apparently there's so much crap on screen and your shield is so pumped up to compensate that EVERYTHING produces huge chains and it's practically impossible to die. i guess i'll have to download the demo first :/

Which is like I said, its more focused on score than challenge. I would argue that the PSP version is still the better shooter, but the XBLA one is as challenging as say...HEXIC but a lot more fun.

that's good to know.  i thought it was more fun chaining combos than battling difficult bosses.  sounds like E4 is a win for someone like me.

okay, this game kicks all kinds of ass.  fuck all the EEE purists out there, this is on some score attack type shit and it benefits from it greatly.  a couple worthy notables.  there's a new gameplay mechanic called "beat bonus"  basically, if you hit "A" / detonate on beat with the music, you're rewarded with a larger explosion.  this adds a nice risk-reward element to the game as you'll be deciding whether or not it's worth it to hit on beat as your shields expire.  as a rhthym game/music fan, i'm all about playing to the beat.  made a difference in my score as well, as i was easily chaining 1200+ combos at a time.

another nice addition is the ability to cancel detonations (it's been a while, but i recall you couldn't do this in EEE on the PSP).  essentially, what this does is allow you to stop in the middle of chain combos to retrieve power-ups and multipliers on the playing field.  there were a few times where this saved my ass, i was down to about 20 secs left and i canceled detonation mid-chain and retrieved some extra time power-ups.

lastly, the ultimate feature is "play with your own muzak".  wow. the robustness of this feature is insane.  instead of just playing your favorite tunes in the background, the game brings you to an interface where you "capture" segments of your music to set its beats per minute (BPM).  once that is done, you can play the game with songs or entire albums and everything is synchronized with the game's sound effects and gameplay.  personally, i think it's pretty revolutionary.  not only can you tailor the game to your personal rhythm, but everything works in-engine and beat bonuses are applied the same way they are if you normally played the game.  :heartbeat  i need to play around with this feature more, but i'm already looking forward to synchronizing entire albums into the game.   if you're a fan of custom soundtracks, this definitely takes that concept to another level.

...ended up taking a 2 hour lunch today playing this.  oops.   :-[  scored 1.9 trillion points which put me at 661 in the ranks, but i could've totally gone for much longer if i didn't have to get back to work.

Basically you blow yourself up to set off chain reactions of explosions, specifically with enemies next to each other. Certain colored enemies drop certain power ups. Speed modifiers and the like, but the time extend power ups are the key to both versions of this game. Hence, Every EXTEND EXTRA.

As time runs down you can halt explosion chains to zoom in and get some power ups. Every time you respawn you have a limited period of time where a shield protects you and you can collect power ups among the mass of enemies. There are even power ups that extend this shield time. The idea really, in this version anyway, is to get your clock so high that you can let the larger chains run on without interrupting.

Yeah I finally understood that those were powerups and I needed to get them. But what I don't understand: is there some sort of, like, aftertouch effect or whatever? It feels like I'm kind of invisibly directing the explosions.

And what's this about halting explosions? Man I need to watch the attract mode or something.

to be honest, i got kind of bored during my 60 trillion run.  it would have been nicer if the levels/graphics switched up, but unlimited mode is pretty much a 1-level affair.  that's been my biggest gripe so far.  if you're gonna sit there score attacking for an hour, it would have been nice for them to switch it up. =\  hopefully theres some downloadable features in the pipeline.

All you do is just group the enemies together, blow yourself up and watch the chain reactions. Grab the goodies, and continue the process and rack up a high score. That was off the demo, though.

Yeah but what's with the explosion canceling? And the rhythm aspect? And when I blow up, does moving the stick do anything? Because it really feels like I'm guiding an invisible cascade or something along those lines - ugh, not very eloquent.

When your explosion happens, the items slowly float away, so you can cancel while there's an open gap and pick up the goodies before they go away.

The rhythm aspect helps you get a higher score, by exploding on the "beat" - that rumble you feel on the controller at times.

I don't think moving the stick does anything besides move your star around.

explosion canceling is only used when you're running out of time.  part of the game is making sure you have enough time to extend your session.  let's say you're in the middle of a 1000+ chain and you have 10 seconds left... by canceling, you can grab some time power-ups to increase your time limit to a minute or so... rinse & repeat.  once you blow up, there's no control over the explosion -- just sit back and enjoy the show.  look for the circles and sparkly fireworks to follow where your bomb is detonating next, it gives you an idea if your chain is going to end.

by detonating on beat, you gain extra multiplier points to enhance your score.  and it also increases the size of the explosion, cover more surface area.  there's an achievement for hitting 10 beat bonuses in a row...
