okay, this game kicks all kinds of ass. fuck all the EEE purists out there, this is on some score attack type shit and it benefits from it greatly. a couple worthy notables. there's a new gameplay mechanic called "beat bonus" basically, if you hit "A" / detonate on beat with the music, you're rewarded with a larger explosion. this adds a nice risk-reward element to the game as you'll be deciding whether or not it's worth it to hit on beat as your shields expire. as a rhthym game/music fan, i'm all about playing to the beat. made a difference in my score as well, as i was easily chaining 1200+ combos at a time.
another nice addition is the ability to cancel detonations (it's been a while, but i recall you couldn't do this in EEE on the PSP). essentially, what this does is allow you to stop in the middle of chain combos to retrieve power-ups and multipliers on the playing field. there were a few times where this saved my ass, i was down to about 20 secs left and i canceled detonation mid-chain and retrieved some extra time power-ups.
lastly, the ultimate feature is "play with your own muzak". wow. the robustness of this feature is insane. instead of just playing your favorite tunes in the background, the game brings you to an interface where you "capture" segments of your music to set its beats per minute (BPM). once that is done, you can play the game with songs or entire albums and everything is synchronized with the game's sound effects and gameplay. personally, i think it's pretty revolutionary. not only can you tailor the game to your personal rhythm, but everything works in-engine and beat bonuses are applied the same way they are if you normally played the game.

i need to play around with this feature more, but i'm already looking forward to synchronizing entire albums into the game. if you're a fan of custom soundtracks, this definitely takes that concept to another level.
...ended up taking a 2 hour lunch today playing this. oops.

scored 1.9 trillion points which put me at 661 in the ranks, but i could've totally gone for much longer if i didn't have to get back to work.
