Texas Chainsaw Masscre

So I watched it last night around 1am after my little adventure.

I must say, this movie was very different from what I thought it would be. Overall I thought it was pretty good, for a horror movie. It was very well paced. Nothing was brooded over for too long, and the movie quicky kills off people. Which brings me to the violence in the movie.

This movie was not nearly as gory I expected it to be. Instead, the movie utilized a style of intimate violence. Most people are desensitized to gun violence in movies, in part because it doesn't connect with the average person; I don't think the average person realizes what guns are capible of, in part because they aren't exposed to them much in real life. Yet when you see someone take a knife and slowly gash their hand, it looks real and relevent; everyone has used a knife before.

Seeing that dude stab himself and Franklin, or seeing people get smashed in the head with hammers was just crazy. I flinched. I was shocked that the movie never showed someone getting disembodied by the chainsaw though. I'm guessing those things happen in the more over the top sequels.

I've seen many horror movies, but this one really made me yell at the TV more than any other one. Not screaming, but actually yelling at the dumbass teenagers. First they picked up this wierd ass hitchhiker. Then they go to an abandoned house, and split up? WTF. I felt really sorry for Franklin lol; they really fucked him over throughout the movie, especially in that house. And other thing: I realize AIDS wasn't a huge thing in the 70s, but why the fuck were they screwing around with blood all the time? They used that knife (with the hillbilly's blood on it!) to cut their food, and then Frankin wiped his face with a rag he had used to wipe his bloody hand with. Ugh

Leatherface was pretty badass. The scene where he kills the first dude was amazing. Comes out of nowhere with the hammer, bashes his head, pulls his twitching body into the room and then SLAMS the damn door. Oh shit. His little dance at the end of the movie was just insane. Wow.

And his family...wow. This is another movie that will ensure I never go driving late at night in the south. Grandpa really freaked me out when I realized he was actually alive. When he started sucking her finger... :lol

Overall I thought it was pretty good. It didn't scare me that much (the part where Leatherface comes out of nowhere and kills Franklin made me jump like a rabbit), but it did freak me out.

How are the sequels/remakes?

I like the atmosphere of the movie, very moody dark and creepy.

However, I'm a scary movie bitch, and didn't flinch at all...and people who I know who love horror movies were creeped out by it go figure. *shrugs*

I remember after watching it when the guy was stuck on the lamp, my friend Nick was like would you save me or save your ass instead.  I said I guess I'd try to save you, and he was like man your stupid.

I think people get freaked out by the sheer unexpectedness of it. Most movies give you some kind a aural clue that something is going to happen. There'll be a buildup in the  music, or a distinctive 'killer sound' to let you know what's about to happen.

In TCM, that first death comes out of nowhere at all. He just completely fucking destroys that guy. That alone screws some people up.

The original is great (of course), the remake is very good, and I think most people seeing either of the versions of Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the very first time might actually like it better than the original.

The only worthwhile sequel is TCM2, which is kind of like a crazy horror dark comedy.  Kinda like Evil Dead 2, but better.  Dennis Hopper v. Leatherface chainsaw swordfight?  Hell yes.

Meh, TCM2 didn't do it for me, and the remake just seemed to find ways to make the original less horrifying and more "what the fuck, why isn't this over yet?"

Different strokes...

I love the guy who keeps heating up the end of the wire and picking at his scalp.  TCM III is shit, but there's a couple of funny bits here and there - "Get out the big skillet," and the crazy dude who sings to himself "All you motherfuckers, don't tell me what I should do..."  Avoid the Matthew McConaughy (sp?) one like it's Ebola.  There is exactly one decent bit, and I will explain it to you now to save you any curiousity.  Matthew M's character has a fucked-up leg brace which only allows him to walk via some sort of remote control pneumatics he's hooked up.  At one point he is chasing Renee Zellweger's character, and falls down into a box filled with old remotes, losing his own in the pile.  A mild laugh ensues as he's trying to figure out which one works.

The remakes have R. Lee Ermey, so that's a plus.  The first was really decent (I was surprised), so I'm looking forward to the sequel/prequel.

Another thing I found impressive was the lack of profanity. There were three curse words in the entire movie. From what I've heard, the remake is over the top in that regard, as well as with the violence. I saw a clip of someone stepping in a beartrap or something.

I'll probably rent the remake, as well as Evil Dead lol. Then I'll go see the new TCM at the movies.
