Upgrade to the PSP Slim NOW
« on: October 15, 2007, 10:38:07 PM »
Got one with some of my EBGames store credit, modded it, and then I'll trade the old PSP back in later (you need one to mod a slim PSP).

This machine's so awesome. It's so light that the system is now much more comfortable to use, it truly feels like an handheld.

The d-pad and the buttons are improved significantly too, now you can play some of those 2D games without the experience feeling like a chore, and hold a diagonal direction without breaking a sweat. The analog stick is somewhat improved too. The d-pad is a bit harder on the thumb, but you get used to it very quickly, and can play long game sessions without having your thumb feeling sore. Playing Metal Slug Anthology is a blast.

A fair level of ghosting remains on the screen, but it's not bothersome. Colors are really better too, and the picture is sharper. It really sucked ass to stare at the old PSP's screen for hours on end because that shit was pale, but not anymore. Now it rivalizes with the DS Lite's color reproduction quality. As I'm about as severe on picture quality as dark10x, I really appreciated it and am never going back to an older unit.

Get this shit as soon as you can, it rules. The PSP is the best handeld system ever now, with an ever-growing software library full of deep titles that make the DS' game line-up seem like a sorry joke.

The PSP has rocked ever since they made all the games available for free.

I really want to buy the Dracula game

was strongly considering Crisis Core FFVII too, but I was disappointed to learn that the quest only lasted for 12 hours

that will be different when one's released that lasts for years on end without dying spontaneously, as I'm tired of the washed-out VGA output and of hoarding discs in my small apart, and desire the quieter BenQ/LiteOn drive too... when you buy loads of games you're tied to the corresponding system and thus need to be able to use it reliably

apparently those "Jasper" ones will hit stores in mid to late 2008

Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins kicks ass, Capcom's done it perfectly. It's constant trial and error, but it's SATISFYING trial and error too. I fucking love this game.

The controls are a bit awkward, though, sometimes they seem to respond somewhat slowly, and it's hard to move left or right when you've already jumped in the air without having touched the right or left direction on the d-pad just before pressing on the jump button.

Yes you can, but I suggest you don't bother with the Slim, hon. The fatty will suit you just fine.

I don't believe shaving off a few microns and reducing the weight by a few grams constitutes throwing your money in a trash dispenser.

Explain the DS Lite

If they had gone with a different design for the upgrade I probably would've bought a Slim, but it looks exactly like the original and I don't care about TV Out, so I'm just keeping my regular white PSP.  I only got it like four or five months ago anyway.

the picture is so much better, I played it for hours on end at college today while waiting for my evening party with the frat to begin

it's such a superior system, mod it and fucking throw your fat PSP away, its screen looks pale and hideous in comparison, it's a chore to stare at that shit

100% worthwhile upgrade, worth every cent

No, you're wrong.  Unless, I dunno, JP PSPs have better screens than American ones by default.

then why was lyte edge claiming that the PSP Slim had much better picture quality over the older units in his impressions? seems like you've just been owned

in other news, I'm still in awe when I think of how tight the control was with the d-pad and Metal Slug Anthology this evening

there was no way that I would've accepted an inferior control pad for that killer Dracula game

and the buttons felt so damn improved too, it made 2D arcade ports on PSP feel truly great

yet another reason to rush out and get a Slim

The Slim screen is better, but it's not an insanely dramatic improvement.

Hyperbole?  They didn't even fix the ghosting problem, there's no way it's worth the upgrade for me considering I've owned a PSP for less than half a year.

The Slim is better because of:

-Weight
-Buttons
-D-Pad
-Nub
-TV-Out
-Slightly improved screen
-Reduced load times in some cases (64mb cache)

It IS the better PSP, no question, but Ichirou clearly doesn't play his PSP enough for it to make a big difference.  His loss.   :-*  Personally, I think any PSP that isn't modded, be it a phat or a slim, is gimped regardless.  :P

The Slim screen is better, but it's not an insanely dramatic improvement.

Right, this is what I said.  The screen is a little more vibrant and the ghosting has been reduced a little more, IMO.

The ghosting never really bothered me, what bothered me with the PSP screen was the pale colors and the overall washed out picture, which is now improved a whole damn lot.

Plus add the other ergonomic advantages that you mentioned and the PSP Slim just becomes a must-have.

Now how the fuck was I supposed to know that?  You always say you only have a few PSP games; it sounds like you don't play it much.

If that's the case, you definitely need a slim!  Shit, 100 hours on that screen??

The screen is fine, man.  The colors are nice and vibrant, I don't get the complaints.  I'm playing Jeanne D'Arc on it at this very moment.  The biggest problem is the ghosting, and I don't even mind it that much (it's worse in older titles like Popolocrois).

And my PSP is FIVE MONTHS OLD.  I am not buying a new fucking unit after five months.  That would be distinguished mentally-challenged.

Who's complaining?  I'm certainly not, but the new slim PSP screen IS noticeably better.  There's certainly nothing wrong with the original model, but the slim is definitely the better system.

I have to say though man...if you're playing games that take hours of play time like Jeane D'Arc, well, the TV-out on the slim is just made for that.

I'd at least mod your PSP now.  Then you can use it to mod a slim if you do decide to get one later.
