I didn't see anyone in Royal Tenenbaums besides Henry that wasn't broken in some way and didn't think anyone qualified as cool.

one performance alone doesn't excuse ben stiller's, gwen paltrow's, and owen wilson's stultifyingly arch performances. i felt like a dark god of quirky had risen in my screen and sneered at me for two hours. after arrested development, i can't imagine stomaching it again, period.

i loved loved loved arrested development. it's the royal tenenbaums, though, only clever, funny, sweet, and insane rather than cloying, smarmy, arch, and self-aggrandizing. what i meant is that with arrested development around, the royal tenenbaums might as well not even exist.

how many off-center shots of kohl-eyed moppetfolk moping can one movie contain? royal tenenbaums answers: all of them.

Lost in Translation blew ass, it's just some set of random quirky events that occur in Tokyo and tease you, and then at the end... nothing happens

Coppola just wanted to plug Tokyo's atmosphere since she had a love affair there (I think)

People kept hyping up Rushmore for me back after it came out, so I remember downloading it and watching it and having to force myself through it. Never before have I watched a movie where no one dies that I wanted the main character to die so badly. I don't understand the hype for that movie at all.

Hell yeah, what a fucking awful hero. Loathable, minable, worthless dork who talks all the time about the random weird stuff that goes in his mind and jinxes everything he's ever associated with, I felt like breaking his neck so bad. What a piece of jewish trash.

I hated Owen Wilson's performance but didn't mind Ben Stiller or Gweneth Paltrow.  Gene Hackman gave that movie a soul and kept me entertained which is a lot more than I can say for The Life Aquatic which seems to be viewed more favorably here.  I wanted to walk out of the theater during that one.

...random quirky events?  it's not actually that quirky of a movie I'd say

I guess I like my movie reviewers to have some kind of perspective on life, and sadly, that's one of things Mondain really, really lacks.

i liked life aquatic because it was just straight-up wacky-silly and dialed the smarm meter way down. admittedly, it got a bit heavy on the lingering wes anderson patent mood shots and droll facial reactions in the middle, but the end was crazy zany camp. it was a lot of fun if you didn't go in expecting, well, the royal tenenbaums. also: jeff goldblum in an awesome self-parody!

I like Rushmore quite a bit, but I do think the movie's reputation today overshadows its actual quality.  If I watched it for the first time today, after hearing the years and years of hype, I'd probably be left a little clueless.  Having seen it when it came out, I can appreciate it more easily.

No fucking way.  Go look at his filmography.  Bitch is second only to like Nicholas Cage when it comes to coasting off a few big successes.

Goldblum isn't in that much of the movie.  I found the hostage situation to the beach rescue entertaining.  Everything else was just bad.

I'll cop to enjoying RT when I saw it.

The meticulously-planned quirk was pretty obvious even then, but it was only my second Wes Anderson film after Rushmore.  Even if he does something better now, I don't think I could enjoy it, because it would still be coming from the same bag of tricks.

That's Mondain dropping some French prole.

ah; makes sense, then. actually, i'd prefer he inserted correct french modifiers instead of such painful neologisms as "rivalize" and "sarcastical"

Yeah I'd say the first post is spot on.

Anderson does some incredible things with his sets, and I'll keep watching his films for that reason.  He is certainly one note though, and he's not a storyteller.  His stories are just ornaments for his aesthetic.

Lost in Translation really did nothing for me.

Wes Anderson is awesome, and I love his movies. All of them, for the record. I think you guys just hate him because his films are over hyped around you. Honestly, when I got into watching Wes Anderson films, a max of one, maybe two people had seen them before. I guess that's the benefit of living in Kentucky - less hype about quirky movies because people around here are just used to eating mainstream shit like Kickin It Old School (which played on two screens in my hometown and probably made all of it's money in KY).

But yeah, Sofia Coppola sucks. Outside of Lost in Translation, I can't fucking stand her movies, especially Virgin Suicides. Fuck Sofia Coppola. She should stop making movies immediately.

Rushmore is the Wes Anderson movie I most dislike.

My sister's a big fan of Anderson...I watch the movies with her, usually (I don't own any of them on DVD).  I thought Royal Tenenbaums was a lot of fun, in a bizarre sort of way.

As I said, I agree with TVC's assessment on Anderson's talents - so far he's a one note director.  That said, he plays that note pretty well.

Wes Anderson is 38 years old, single, and was born in Houston Texas.

I know, but it kind of seems insecure.  He's using hyperbole to get a rise, why respond civilly, or respond at all?

Fact: Martin Scorsese is a big fan of his movies, even choosing him as "The Next Martin Scorsese" in an Esquire magazine article.

Sure it's the internet, which is why I don't get why people are concerned with differentiating themselves as casual Wes anderson fans as opposed to hardcore fans.  Does it really matter?  Judging by what I've read, TVC seems to have good taste, but he's not infallible.

I have no problem with differing opinions.  It just seems like the forum cares too much what TVC, and the collective opinion of the board thinks.  Even when he maliciously makes fun of something people like, they will still attempt to meet him in the middle and try to agree with him.

I see no problem in trying to justify liking things you know are terrible.  It is a sign of healthy guilt.  Even I display this tendency when discussing things like Uwe Boll or my habit of drunkenly spending hundreds of dollars on Duran Duran songs.

Course ya do.  Nobody gripes about how the opinions of the group are just the result of some bogus social dynamic unless they don't like the opinions.  But that's boring and meta and I don't want to contribute further to the derailment.

What do people think of the Anderson-alikes?  I thought Napoleon Dynamite was boring, Little Miss Sunshine was awesome, and haven't seen Rocket Science.

Little Miss Sunshine was pretty great.  Napoleon Dynamite was good stuff the first time, but not of a quality that justifies how much the thing took off.  I don't even know what Rocket Science is.
