Hack total.  One note director, if even that.

Also, please tell me nobody likes Sofia Coppola, either.  She's not even one note.  Calling her one note would be doing a disservice to the number one and the concept of notes.

I've only seen Rushmore and The Life Aquatic. The former was, at best, decent(I don't remember it much), but the latter was awful.

I saw Darjeeling Limited over the weekend, I liked it.  :-\

I also liked Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, and Tenenbaums. Life Aquatic sucked balls, though.

*high fives TVC* I am so glad you made this thread. There are few directors I loathe more than Wes Anderson. Tenenbaums is one of the most appaling fims ever devised. Its just so 'OMG look at my movie its sooooooquirky', Anyone that says they like it only like it becuase they percieved it as 'arty' and think they are supposed to enjoy it for that reason. I want to punch someone in the face.

Also: PD your new Avatar is the bomb, and did you get Touch Detective TVC?

life aquatic was all right.

I don't think he tries to make quirky movies, I think he tries to make fun of that idea actually.

I dunno, I think the whole "quirky" thing is his schtick.

FWIW, outside of Rushmore, I've enjoyed his movies, but they are totally one note...I agree with TVC 100% on that.

Solo and I both love Sofia Coppola. We both loved Marie Antoinette.  :-\

Also Lost In Translation is in my TOP FIVE  movies of all time.  :-[ She is probably one of my favorite current working directors.

Also Bottle Rocket and Rushmore are FANTASTIC movies.

He's definitely a one note director but that doesn't make Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums any less entertaining.

Thank God for this thread. This director sucks ass. Rushmore is one of the most overrated loads of bullshit ever. The characters are all just aggravating and devoid of charism too, save for Bill Murray's. What the fuck is this film even about?

I don't have any qualms about saying I love all his movies.  All of them.  But it's difficult to say that his film career so far has been anything more than one-note -- that much is very true.

I saw about half of Life Aquatic and found it very interesting and pleasant.  I also saw the end credits of Virgin Suicides and remember liking whatever post-punk/new wave/synth pop song they used.

The Virgin Suicides is an adaptation so terrible that it actually harmed my appreciation of the book.  And made me angry.  That movie should have been the end of several careers.

i really liked rushmore, and i was amused by a life aquatic despite its awkward narrative and pacing. hated royal tenenbaums and bottle rocket (erik wolpaw of old man murray was browbeating people to see that one at qt3 for like a year), though. i hated both lost in translation and marie antoinette, so wes anderson >>>>>>>>>> sofia coppola, by a vast gulf. willco is right for a change: wes anderson is the arty version of kevin smith. like kevin, wes makes only one type of movie: the tongue-bulging-in-cheek quirkathon. that said, i also like a couple of kevin's films, too. they're the wii of directors: a cute gimmick grossly overextended.

life aquatic is best if you haven't been carpetbombed by wes anderson films. if it had been my first wes anderson flick, i'd probably be a lot less critical -- although i still enjoyed it quite a bit. jeff goldblum was hilarious in it, and i normally hate jeff goldblum!

I liked Clerks 2 a lot, too.  It was probably one of the better comedies of 2006, but even still, people don't pretend that Smith movies are great in the same way they tend to pretend Anderson films great.

Clerks 2 was one of the better films in 2006, which was a pretty mediocre year up 'till the last two or so months.  That said, Kevin Smith is a one-note director and doesn't have the fan acclaim that practically says, "Wes Anderson's poop smells and tastes like Game Fuel and cures cancer!"

People kept hyping up Rushmore for me back after it came out, so I remember downloading it and watching it and having to force myself through it. Never before have I watched a movie where no one dies that I wanted the main character to die so badly. I don't understand the hype for that movie at all.

Life Aquatic was okay, but I think either it was confused in what kind of movie it wanted to be or it was just marketed really badly.

Quelle surprise!!

The only Wes Anderson flick I have not thoroughly enjoyed was The Royal Tennenbaums.

Royal Tenenbaums is the worst of them, I think.  Life Aquatic I didn't find particularly terrible and I was mostly able to take it at face value.  Bottle Rocket was zzzzzzzz.  It both had the things that Wes did well and the things that he does terribly.  Rushmore was a pretty good movie, though.

Honestly, Corny, I am more even-handed with Anderson than you'd give me credit.  I like Rushmore, and I think his other movies are mediocre and overrated at best, and exercises in abject pomposity at worst.  I find it kind of entertaining that by your logic, not liking undeniably pompous things makes the complainer pompous.  That really makes sense.

Okay so out of the five films Wes has made, you like two of them. So that means he's not worth a handful of shit?

Do we still have to go over why I think this thread is a bit on the pompous side, or does that about cover it do you think?

corny, did you like lost in translation?

It was okay. Not life changing like so many GAffers exclaimed, but it was a nice little flick. I loved that you never found out what Scarlett's character whispered to Bill's character, that was cute. And any movie that opens with a shot of Scarlett in see-through panties can't be THAT bad.

What does TVC know about being ginger? If anything, I should be writing that script. But I gotta finish what I'm working on currently.

Sofia Coppola and Wes Anderson are both hipster visual fetishists with a penchant for cleverly masked sentimentality that rivals anything "mainstream."

You're trying too hard, like TVC. Sometimes a simple "I don't like them because they suck" will suffice.
