I'm sitting here all day with a monitor and an ethernet cable handy, why not put them to work in a form factor PC like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856101032. I could haul it to work and haul it home without any trouble, just plugging it in into the monitor at work and the bad-ass tv at home, when I get it.

What all needs to go immediately in this machine that it does not have?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Repost, since the only answer I got was from am nintenho, and he didn't realize that the machine does NOT come with a processor.

Doesnt look very flexible, at the expense of portability of course.

My plan concerning the PC is almost exactly that (the X-series is the flat one right?), the only problems being money and power. Stuff I don't have.

WAITAMINUTE FOR FREE HOLY BALLS AWSOME.

edit: lol the "read posts in the thread" feature while your posting" is awesome

I mean its not super new but its runs WoW and vista, it has a pretty good card in it if I remember. Im just never using it even tho I had planned to. Ill throw in the copy of Vista Home Premium I bought for it too. I won't be able to send it off till Saturday or next Monday. Gotta get off my ass and wipe all my DOWNLOADED episodes of House lol :/.

Do you have a monitor already? I dont have a spare keyboard or mouse right now I dont think.

it's a 2.8GHz P4 with an AGP 9600XT. find a decent AGP card like an X1600 or a 6800 (both are like $100) and it should run plenty of reasonably modern games. doesn't it have 2GB RAM in it?

Think so, it runs WoW currently really well, better than my 1000 dollar laptop anyway. I think I upgraded the thing at some point, graphics card wisee...mabe that was the 9600

yeah, as long as it is single-slot, it'll fit -- it'll be snug, but it'll fit.

A friend of mine carves out foam (like egg crate) carrying cases for various instruments (disassembled rifles and handguns mostly) and owes me a favor. Should I have him make me one or what?

Its not so much flat as it is, the size of a bagel toaster. Its an older shuttle model so while its a good pc, its not SUPER portable, but much more portable than a mid tower.

Now that I have a simple grasp of upgrading graphics cards, how would I go about putting in a new processor should the need (or want) arise?

EDIT: Yes, I realize I am completely distinguished mentally-challenged. I have seriously never opened up a computer before. The only thing I have ever opened up is an XBOX, and I almost electrocuted myself then.

EDIT 2: I'm looking at the newegg page for intel processors, and am confused a lot more than I was 45 minutes ago.

EDIT 3: There's paste involved? Thermal Paste? That sounds like some sort of anal lube or something.

I actually have never installed a proc before either, so dont feel too bad. I need to do a proc upgrade soon, have the proc, but maybe I should challenge myself for a change.

I'm not gonna upgrade anything on the new Sexbox until I get it in and break out a ruler and thermometer lol. I didn't realize how big a graphics card was until somebody showed me his, then I was all "holy shit that's pretty big lol".

Thermal paste forms a seal with the heatsink which is the only thing keeping your processor from quickly overheating to the point of failure.  It's pretty easy to upgrade a processor as long as you can get the heat sink on and off fairly easily.

When you say forms a seal, I'm thinking it's like gorilla glue where you better come with a chisel and good head of steam  :lol

uh, chances are, the socket on the shuttle pc won't accept anything faster than an old-school 3.4EE Pentium 4. Core Duo and Core 2 Duo procs are right out -- those require wholly different sockets.
duc

It's not glue, just a conductive paste.  The more surface area of the processor that touches the heatsink the more heat it transfers.  Without paste forming a good seal between the two would require tightening your heatsink down to the point that you'd start to worry about your processor or motherboard cracking.

You should be able to wipe most of the paste off with a piece of cloth.

P4 with proper support can still run most games pretty well, even tho 'pretty well' is subjective.

yeah, it's the video card what dictates the larger performance factor in games these days.

How will the SexBox run HL2?

EDIT: With the possible upgrade of something like this down the road: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814241041

Should run it and TF2 just fine. Probably won't max out at 1280x1024 + 80 gajillion effects, but it should look good.
