Santorum's Tears Make Hit RecordsBy David KnowlesOct 17th 2007 8:37AMFiled Under:Republicans, Humor, MediaSarah Maria Santorum entered the national spotlight at a difficult moment. It was election night, 2006, and her father, Rick, was delivering his concession speech to a room full of supporters after losing his re-election bid to Democrat Bob Casey. Eight-year-old Sarah had difficulty controlling her emotions as her father spoke, and broke down into tears at his side. The media can't resist a crying child or cheerleader, so the cameras zoomed in, though, given his daughter's front-and-center placement, some might argue it was a tad difficult to do anything else. A few blogs that opposed Santorum picked up the images, and for a moment, it seemed like Sarah's face was everywhere.Well, now Sarah's back in the public eye, and her tears have been memorialized in song. One American who witnessed Sarah's breakdown was country music songwriter, Leslie Satcher, a self-described "Fox News junkie" (where she saw the images of Santorum). According to the Politico, Ms. Satcher was incensed by what she was watching:"I saw the cameras zoom in on that little girl," Satcher said. "That's awful. They are not even showing Rick. They are showing her crying. She is hurting, and she knows her dad is hurting."After going to church, Satcher ruminated on the whole episode and then stayed up into the wee hours writing a song."I had the sermon and the picture of Rick's little girl in my head," Satcher said. "The song is about the fact that we are a faith-believing, conservative nation, and that voice gets very little front-page time to me."So, in the catchy new ditty, titled, "For These Times," Sarah gets one verse, the second verse goes to the troops, and the third is about faith. It's an uplifting number, you could say, and will be released on country super-star Martina McBride's new anthemic collection "Waking up Laughing." It's not the first time Satcher and McBride have collaborated. Who could forget the 2002 classic, "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues"?Little Sarah was quite excited to learn that the pain of that night had been used for the good. In fact, her father surprised her with the news:Santorum sat her down at the kitchen table. He asked his oldest daughter to get the video camera. And he told Sarah Maria. "She started crying again," Santorum said. Calling the South Park boys. The country needs you, stat. No, I'm not a huge McBride fan. I like my country to be about failed love affairs, drinking too much, and loss. Give me George Jones or Merle Haggard any day of the week. And while some may find inspiration the lyrics to "For these Times," to me they sound a little Hallmark Card. But hey, you be the judge:In these times in which we liveWhere the worst of what we liveIs laid out for all the world on the front pageand the sound of someone's heartbreak Is a sound bite at the news breakWith a close shot of the tears rollin' down their faceBlessed be the child who turns a loving eyeAnd stops to pray For these times in which we live
Poor little kid. That picture will haunt her for the rest of her life.
