The Holy Mountain.  The movie takes a detour into artty titty city briefly after that.

Jodorowsky is a cool dude.

Going off on a tangent (partially related to Jodorowsky, actually): TVC, did you know they're doing yet another version of Dune?  First, the aborted Jodorowsky version, then the Lynch version (which I'm a fan of), then the TV movies (which were not particularly great), and now...Peter Berg is trying to do a film version of the first book once again.

Probably you guys know Peter Berg as an actor (he was in The Last Seduction as the mark in Linda Fiorentino's con), but he's also done some work as a director (Very Bad Things, The Kingdom).  I had no idea he was interested in this material and I'm curious as to what he'll do with it, since I don't really see him as a fantasy-type guy at all.

Yeah, that pedigree doesn't really look Dune-y.  That's the thing about the aborted Jodorowsky version.  If there's one person that probably could have done it in the 70s, it was him, and he had a cream dream cast (for the 70s) and crew, too.

Well, probably could have done it is the key phrase.  From what I have read of Jodorowsky, he would have done plenty of stuff to make the material his own, which means Dune fans still wouldn't have liked it.

EDIT:  I just put El Topo in.  This is easily one of the weirdest movies I have ever seen.  This would never approach getting made today, even as an indie film.

I suppose you never know, though - I mean, Verhoeven was known as this artsy European director until he did Robocop.  But I'm wondering if this isn't just an attempt by Berg to cash in on the new craze for fantasy-type flicks.

Jodorowsky is a genius, I'm just...extremely uncomfortable...seeing the high esteem he has for Marilyn Manson.  I thought he was smarter than that. :lol

According to Wiki, Jodorowsky's movies inspired Manson's look, which, well, makes a lot of sense.

I dislike Marilyn Manson a lot less than I probably should.  Although he sometimes comes across as an ass in interviews, a lot of the time, he really doesn't.  He's charismatic to a degree, and if you are into weird shit as much as Jodorowsky is, I bet he's diggable in person.  I mean, Jodorowsky is into all sorts of bullshit about new age garbage and tarot, and I bet Manson can at least talk the talk about that.

I'm not so sure I would call Jodorowsky a genius, though.  El Topo and The Holy Mountain are both great and total messes at the same time.  So much of the stuff that is supposed to be revelatory and "deep" in The Holy Mountain really comes across as kind of simple, and at worst as hippie freak out-y I'M BLOWING YOUR MINDy stuff.  But then something will be totally awesome in the movie, and there will be some incredible shots.  The Holy Mountain, even more than El Topo, it's a crazy mixed bag.  It's great and unique and all, but you have to be willing to take the misses with the hits.

I think El Topo is sort of the same.  I think it is more consistent, but the highs aren't as high and the lows aren't as low.  It's a shame it's not in widescreen, though :(  Some great shots in there.

All the Manson interviews I've read give me the impression that he's a very shallow person...the type of person who's into weird shit for the sake of being weird more than due to any real deep interest in it.  His interviews give me the impression that he's a bit of a dimbulb, also.  He constructs sentences very simplistically, for example.

Perhaps I should correct my statement: Jodorowsky is a mad genius.  There's something extremely off-kilter about him that amuses me greatly.
