I have a 512MB 1st gen Shuffle, a 4G 40GB and an 80GB 5.5G. My wife has an 8GB Nano G3.
I love them all. I got nice cases, even an iPoDonut for my two hard drive ones. (Cover for the click wheel)
I used to make custom firmware for them, with Pac-Man art.

Just got off the phone with the US Apple Support. I thought maybe I could get the rules bent a little in the USA, particularly since it was a US-bought product. But they don't love me anymore either.  :maf

They said letting any hardware go out of warranty, and not opting to buy Applecare is essentially a gamble, and that they're unable (unwilling!) to make an exception. So, in short: 500USD iPod Touch is really only obligated to work for 12 months, after that, enjoy your hockey puck.

OK, I tried.

Having already spent a day in Osaka attempting to address this, I'll now follow up on the OOW repair place in Nipponbashi, pay whatever they're charging, and live with the results. Failing that, I may mail it to a US OOW repair place and have them ship to a friend's US address, then have it shipped to Japan. Golly, I love the convenience of using Apple products.  ::)

I have a newish 16gb Nano (the video one) that's been giving me problems. This thing is supposed to be rated for like 20 hours of battery, right? Pretty much since I've got it I can only get like 7-8 hours listening to music, PowerSaver on etc. etc. and it sucks. I bought it at a Target and don't even have the receipt anymore, so I'm not sure I could even get it fixed/exchanged at this point. :'(

I've read that letting the battery completely run out can effect the life the battery itself. My 3G Nano is still going strong (as far as battery) but the click wheel sucks donkey dick.

I've let the battery drain like two or three times since I got it, but even before that I've only gotten like eight or maybe nine hours tops without needing to recharge. I think mine might be busted. Also sometimes in the middle of a song it will randomly turn on shuffle and put on a different song, is this some widespread glitch or just my iPod being a dick?

the same fucking thing happened to my 80GB, chrono, and they told me the same thing: buy a new one or pay a ton for repairs.  i responded by throwing my ipod against my dashboard in a fit of rage, and now it just shows a picture or a ipod with a frowny face when i turn it on.

fuck apple indeed

Apple tends to make quality hardware, but not in the case of the iPods from what I've experienced. I've owned three in my lifetime and all three ended up basically becoming bricks within a span of no more than a year and a half, and it's not like I'm throwing them at the ground or anything. They're just not very well made, and purposely made to break down after a little while so that you feel obligated to go out and buy a newer, more expensive model.

Apple continues to swindle me :'(

This is why I always buy Apple products with an American Express card, something learned from my father.  He bought my wife her iPhone at the end of 2008 when we first moved here.  The speaker went dead a month ago, out of warranty.  Apple said it would cost $200 for a refurb.  Thanks to Amex, which will cover the warranty costs another year, we got $200 back from them and got a replacement iPhone, no Applecare needed.

Chrono, are you headed to the States anytime soon?  Seems like it could be a lot cheaper buying a new PC or Mac here instead of in Japan.  The MacBook I got during a trip to a Tokyo Apple Store in 2008 cost $300-$400 more than in the U.S.
