New GT5 Demo is up on Asia PSN
« on: October 19, 2007, 07:01:24 PM »
Anyone going to give it a try?  Apparently, it's kinda disappointing because it's still the same old gameplay and the graphics don't look quite as good as the PR bullshots.

I'm going to DL right now and come back with some impressions.

Up already? I thought it wasn't supposed to be up until tomorrow. I'm not a fan of GT, but I'll download it when I get home, I guess.

I like my racing games to be fun, thank you very much.  I don't think they made any of that sort of racer this year.  At lest there's Trackmania.

Yeah, I'm not much for GT, obviously, but GTHD or GT4HD or whatever that thing was last Christmas was a nice little package for free.  They probably could have gotten away with charging money for that.

Dirt and PGR4 are pretty good.  I don't care much for sim racers either.  I have no idea how games like Forza/GT can be so popular when so few people even know how to drive a Civic properly.

Hell no, I ain't going to pay a dime for a game with one track.

I think that I like Mororstorm alot more than I actually do.  It's odd.

It's not bad if you treat it as an arcade racer.  By that, I mean, a game that you would really play in the arcade since there are so few features or customization.  I would probably play it more often if not for the super annoying load times.  I don't even remember a racing game last gen with such terrible load times just in the vehicle selection screen alone.

I could never get into PGR3.  I don't like breaking racers into "realistic" and "arcadey" because none of them are even close to realistic, even with a wheel.  What this basically means is that "realistic" is a nice way of saying "not fun."  PGR, while still better than Forza and GT, is firmly in the "not fun" genre of racers.  I can understand why MS wanted two first party racers, but two unfun ones?  Bleh.

Neither one is worth much without a wheel though.
Yup.  Playing a sim racer with a pad is pointless

Edit: and I find both Forza and PGR4 extremely fun.  Forza 2 is as close as it's come to "real" racer.

They got so many small things right.  The fact that when I have too much power with shit suspension I slide out of control realistically is awesome.  The fact that sharp turns make me spin out like fuck when I'm driving a RWD vehicle is awesome.

GT's version of 'sim' is to just make the wheel harder to turn ::)

Maybe you should give PGR4 a try, TVC.  Quite a few people found it to their liking despite not being fans of PGR3.  At the very least, the graphics are much improved in PGR4.

What did you guys think of Sega Rally Revo and Test Drive Unlimited?  I was thinking of getting Sega Rally for the PC but both the console demo felt really underwhelming.  I never got around to trying TD but I'll give it a try if I hear some good things about it.  I just remembered that I haven't played TD yet because TVC brought up fun vs unfun racers.

Project Gotham Racing  :-X

I generally hate the sim/arcade hybrids. I play them for a little while and I'm just never satisfied. It's always "PICK A HOT CAR" and "PICK A PRETTY TRACK" and go at it for a while until it becomes boring. There's no motivation for me ever.

I totally played a TON of forza 2 this year (even online, I logged like 20 hours online, even played 2 endurance races with GAF and some 1up staffers), which are like 1-2 hour affairs.

I'm pretty happy with the demo. NEeds some work of course.

Burnout Paradise exhibits my most hated trend in racing games:  having all the courses in the same general area.

Also Burnout Dominator was a terrible game, so I'm hoping Criterion doesn't want to be making games similar to that.

Just finished playing the GT demo.  The selection screen looks really stunning.  PD should have left off the human crew though since they are the only things that look fake in there.  Everything kinda goes downhill after you click start.  The car models drop drastically in quality although they still look quite good.  The track looks like it was lifted from the PS2 games and cleaned up a little bit.  What I found most annoying is that Polyphony still uses excessive darkness to make everything look "real".  All I know is that shadows aren't cast on cars like that in broad daylight.  Image quality and the framerate are actually pretty good.  People that complained about jaggies/tearing/slowdown are really exaggerating.

In terms of gameplay, there's nothing to say.  It's still the same old game that you either love or hate.

Download the demo, TVC since you do a much better job of making a game sound like crap.  I want to see how you'll go about magnifying all of GT5's flaws.

Are you only allowed to select between those 3-4 cars or is there a way to unlock every car that's in the race?  My RL car is actually in there but it's not selectable.

i just finished a race.
honestly if you don't want your heart broken don't download it.
the in car view is awesome, the car models aren't bad.
but the track is in your face bad.
the people range from looking like 8bit sprites to cardboard cutouts.
other textures, like trees and grass are lifeless.
i still have hope pd can improve because this felt like a step down from gthd. :(

the overall graphical look of the game doesn't match with the bullshots from sony, probably they're from the replay screen with added AA.
anyway, the game still has GT feel in it, i like that, i hope they don't rape us with GT5P price.  :-\

You have to be kidding, dcharlie.

Forza was a jaggy mess running with 12 cars on screen on the fucking Kameo engine, and obviously its stolen lighting model to boot.

GT5P DEMO is less jaggy and has 16 amazing cars on screen.

Really. Sony should just put up the white flags.

Forza 2 is an awesome game. It's not a graphical showpiece. Everyone knows this. The lighting is flat and the cars are less impressive than GT5P.

Wrong, MS 1st party titles use something called shared technology between them.

it's not the Kameo engine, just some stuff shared between 1st party titles.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1953/a_rare_opportunity_on_piatas_.php?page=3

it's probably something to do with the livery editor.

the HDR in Forza 2 wasn't implemented properly, maybe they wanted to maintain a REAL STABLE 60fps.
and yeah, based on what i've seen, Forza is less jaggied than GT5P not on the car models only, but in the environment.
Forza 2 environment is really way better than GT5P.
the car models seems to be the same since they're based on the same blue prints, the HDR lighting in GT5P made it look better.

but i doubt they would use the Kameo engine, shit is old and i can't imagine it being used for a car sim. game.

btw, Forza 2 is 8 cars not 12 on screen or am i mistaken?

when people complained about halo 3's 640p sans aa, crap texture filtering, and unstable 30fps he threw an epic shitfit

a gt5 demo does objectively better in all of those departments and he's got his magnifying glass out

where do i get that breezy unconcern -- that rakish disregard for any semblance of intellectual honesty :(

I am not a "fucking casual" race driving fan. And if you think GT5P plays like GT4 with the simulation set to professional, then go eat a dick.
