Try other games on your PSP.  If they all look like someone put vaseline on the screen, it's just an AIDS symptom and something to put up with while you die a slow and agonizing death.

That's what happens when you deal with a silly PSX port.

They added some sort of blurring in order to make the sprites look not pixely, I guess.  So it looks shitty now.  Just wait like 12 days and get Disgaea and cummmmm

According to TVC the slowdown is intentional, I am sure he has some wild and zany excuse for this

I do think the slowdown is a stylistic effect.  I see no reason to think otherwise.  Maybe when they were correcting the slowdown for the US release, they left that lil' bit in.  It only happens during special attacks.  Even if it is a technical thing, I'm sure it being stylistic was cited as a reason to not fully fix it.

Also, Disgaea is better than FFT.  That's an objective fact. FFT was fun for its time but the game is not balanced at all and it has a totally clunky interface.

I am going to have to go back and finish playing Jeanne D' Arc.  Storyline sucks so bad but at least my eyes don't water.

I must have missed the bit in history class where english people were shitty monsters, and everything was constrained by a shitty, arbitrary time limit.

The time limit is arbitrary, but I can at least work with that.  It's the goddam way the characters speak...having to try to read someone speaking with a shitty French accent sucks.  Fighting the same douche so many times doesn't help either.

Jeanne D'Arc seems to be a pretty short game.  The 8-4 translation is pure shit, tho.  These guys really suck...the Tales of the World translation was pretty sucky too, and Eternal Sonata had a whole ending bit left untranslated.

Of course they get praised, john tv is one of the admins, and he works there.

Seriously, Tales of the World's translation...Jesus, at the very start of the game you choose the gender of the character, so the dialogue needs to be NON-GENDER specific, but there are DOZENS of instances where NPCs call your character male (I went with a female character).  Things like "You're the right man for the job" or "You're a guy I can trust"...I can understand not being able to change terms like "lawman" or "swordsman" into gender-neutral terms, but how hard is it to change these other instances to stuff like "You're the right person for the job" or "You're someone I can trust"?!

8-4 fucking blows.  Completely mediocre.  Their work on Jeanne D'Arc is cringeworthy at times.

According to people who actually bothered to do a direct comparison, there's no difference between the slowdown in the Japanese and NA/EU versions.  The US reviewers were just imagining things.

8-4 does some good work.  Eternal Sonata, shit animu content forgiven, had a pretty good localization.  Brave Story had a good localization (though it didn't really elevate the way generic material).  Um, Wild Arms 4 had a fairly good localization, though it had some issues.

I don't know offhand what else they've done.  Any examples?

I'd assume so, bt I haven't gotten around to playing that yet.  I have heard that it is also very animu.

If something ranks high enough on the animu meter, it is largely unfixable.  The localization could be done by Shakespeare, but you can never wash away the terrible, overlong, distinguished mentally-challenged animu metaphors and the nonsensical japaspeak that gives us concepts like FIGHT MEGAMAN FOR EVERLASTING PEACE or the Giant Robot-tasticness of I CAN'T STOP FIGHTING IF I WANT THERE TO BE PEACE OR THERE WILL ALWAYS BE FIGHTING!  This is also the problem with Eternal Sonata and its precious little girlisms.

I don't think these concepts are particularly Japanese.  They have a long and thoroughly international pedigree.  World War I was the war to end war, etc.  A taste for long extended metaphors (preferably about food) seems to be endemic among Japanese game developers, though, e.g. the recent Mario Galaxy interview

I never played it. And again, I doubt the source material was anything wonderful to begin with.  Going by dates, that would probably be an early effort, too.

I see your point, but the old horse seems to get dragged out a lot in animu, particularly of the giant fightin robot variety.
