Dunno if it's true or if Dick was just trying to talk up his most acclaimed book, but he claimed that he actually wrote it while consulting the i-ching about what would happen next in the book.

Personally, I think he was just looking for a hype point, since the book, great as it is, isn't so drastically different from other Dick books that I'd believe he did anything substantially different to write it (aka benzedrine and isolation).

I haven't read the others yet (I'm about to read Three Stigmata) but what I got from the Wiki page is that he used the I Ching for plot points and which direction he should go. But it does sound like, as you said, a hype point when trying to play up the book.

Another reason I think it's just a hype point is that it seems like the i ching's appearance in the novel in itself was something of a hype point, too.  It's no secret that Dick was from Berekley, so I am sure he got exposed to a lot of shitty hippy crap before it was hip, so maybe the publication date of High Castle coincides when all that bullshit was catching on as a buzzword.

Yea, so I gave up on Blood Meridian and started reading this. Seven chapters in and it's fucking great. Why didn't I start reading PKD earlier? Jesus.
