The Matrix trilogy on HD DVD and my review...
« on: October 22, 2007, 09:31:04 PM »
So I picked up the complete matrix experience on hd dvd yesterday and spent time actually watching each one.  Below are my experiences as I remember them.

The Matrix - So this movie was actually cool again in High Definition.  I watched it with a friend and we were definitely not sober, so keep that in mind.  The dialogue was absolutely hilarious.  I mean, what the fuck were they thinking?  Some of the stuff was gut bustingly hilarious.  Now, the lobby scene made me shut my mouth.  It was fucking jaw dropping in HD.  I've never seen anything that compares to that scene in HD.  I even went back and watched parts of the 1st on VHS just to be amazed at the difference.  It was incredible.

The Matrix Reloaded - The transfer doesn't really seem that amazing or maybe there are just no scenes to show it off (except the sexy ass random rave scene.  what the fuck were they thinking with that scene?).  The bad effects stand out even more in HD too.  Oh and the bad dialogue goes from funny bad to just omfg shut the fuck up bad.  Still, the staircase scene is pretty amazing and the first half of the car chase scene is bad ass.

The Matrix Revolutions - even worse dialogue and effects.  No standout moments in HD.  I fell asleep.

Conclusion: Do yourself a favor and get the first on HD DVD and rent the last 2 to put you to sleep or make you sober up.

This is one of those "trilogy" series of movies where it's completely obvious that there was no prior intention of carrying it past the first film.

Guess what, they're only sold as a boxset. WB IS ON TO YOU.

Does Lawrence Fishburne look fatter or thinner in HD?
thinner but with more craters.  seriously.  HD is not his friend.  he looked fugly as fuck.

I said this last night as well.  In the second movie they're forced to explain all these things they made up in the first movie that they never thought they'd have to explain

I remember hearing WB will sell each movie alone later.

probably when they profit more from the boxset.

They really have little reason to sell them apart right now.  Why bother when the format isn't doing good numbers?

I'm a big fan of the trilogy, well, not big, but a fan nonetheless.  Unfortunately, the only one I've been able to catch on hd cable so far is Revolutions, which to me looked fantastic, but is the worst of the three movies.  I felt like the final fight with Smith in the rain though looked fuck amazing.  I know hd-dvd > hd cable so I'm surprised to see you didn't mention this scene.

Sounds like I need to catch the original in HD like yesterday though, cool writeup  :)

eh, i just watched part of the second one again.  i had to show my brother the rave scene and yeah, it does look good, but i think it's a lot of the shitty scenery.  nothing makes it stand out.  hell i felt like the movie looked worse because of all the bad special effects.  like the fight on top of the semi.  wtf.  it looks terrible in HD.

Wasn't Ghost in the Shell a trilogy and Matrix ripped off a bunch of things from it?

I don't blame you.  Other than the scene near the beginning that is a total rip off of the first Lobby scene (the one in the basement of the Hell Club going to see the Merovingian) there is nothing in that movie.  It's all fluff aside from a couple of good Smith scenes.  I do like the ending, and the fighting at the gate of the city was cool, but there is too much 'human smith' and other ancilliary characters getting screen time.  It's frightfully boring once you know where it's going (nowhere.)

Still, you should definitely check out the final fight of Neo and Smith, it looked amazing when I saw it.

The Matrix rips off like every William Gibson book/cyber punk anime that came before it.

They just managed to make it mildly mainstream.

Yes, but Matrix ripped off Invisibles almost beat for beat:

http://suicidegirls.com/words/Grant+Morrison

Quote
DRE:This may be old news but was the controversy over The Matrix films being like The Invisibles blown out of proportion?

GM:It's really simple. The truth of that one is that design staff on The Matrix were given Invisibles collections and told to make the movie look like my books. This is a reported fact. The Wachowskis are comic book creators and fans and were fans of my work, so it's hardly surprising. I was even contacted before the first Matrix movie was released and asked if I would contribute a story to the website.

It's not some baffling 'coincidence' that so much of The Matrix is plot by plot, detail by detail, image by image, lifted from Invisibles so there shouldn't be much controversy. The Wachowskis nicked The Invisibles and everyone in the know is well aware of this fact but of course they're unlikely to come out and say it.

It was just too bad they deviated so far from the Invisibles philosophical template in the second and third movies because they blundered helplessly into boring Catholic theology, proving that they hadn't HAD the 'contact' experience that drove The Invisibles, and they wrecked both
'Reloaded' and 'Revolutions' on the rocks of absolute incomprehension. They should have kept on stealing from me and maybe they would have wound up with something to really be proud of - a movie that could change minds and hearts and worlds.

I love the first Matrix movie which I think is a real work of cinematic genius and very timely but I've now heard from several people who worked on The Matrix and they've all confirmed that they were given Invisibles books as reference. That's how it is. I'm not angry about it anymore, although at one time I was because they made millions from what was basically a Xerox of my work and to be honest, I would be happy with just one million so I didn't have to work thirteen hours of every fucking day, including weekends.

In the end, I was glad they got the ideas out but very disappointed that they blew it so badly and distorted all the Gnostic transcendental aspects that made the first film so strong and potent. If they had any sense, they would have befriended me instead of pissing me off. They seem like nice boys.

seem.  i didn't say it looks likes shit.  everything is crystal clear, but there's not a scene that really shows off the transfer though.  the movie looks bland in comparison to the first.
