So the Internet fairy brought me Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock this evening, and I loaded it up and played through the first two tiers plus a few bonus songs. If there's one thing Patel knows, it's fucking music games--I've beaten GH1+2 on Expert, Ouendan 1+2 + EBA on the highest difficulty, Gitaroo Man on Master Mode, etc. etc. Therefore, my word is law.

Overall: B+

This game is good, sometimes very good, but not great. As a friend of mine who's had significant time with both said, "Guitar Hero III is very good--but compared to Rock Band it's a full generation behind." I'll believe it. GHIII doesn't mess with a winning formula, and while it's still an excellent formula, it's starting to wear a little thin.

Music: Music selection is better so far than GHII by a fair bit. More master tracks of classic, poppy rock tracks. less angry German umlaut-rock.

Patterns: Patterns are decent (I only play on Expert, of course). Some are good, a few have inspired moments, but none of the main tracks have really "clicked" with me yet the way GH classics like Strutter and More than a Feeling just make your fingers dance.

Graphics: PS2 version is weirdly ugly. Animations are stiff (esp. on ancillary members) and characters no longer have special animations for star power (wtf). Crowd is also bizarrely faker and suffers from the awkward animation sync of large groups. All in all, a bizarre step backwards from GHII. My theory is that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions probably look great, and the PS2 version was farmed out to the intern team, or the Swedes, or the Swedish interns.

UI: Buttons are now "glossier." The multiplier has been updated with a note counter, which is great for people who can play several hundred notes in a row without making plebian mistakes (me). The rock meter and especially the star power meter are bizarrely hard to read. The star power meter is now shown as a series of vacuum tubes?!

Boss battles: KILL THE PERSON WHO THOUGHT OF THIS IDEA. This is the worst, least fun, most awful anti-music-game thing I have ever seen. Britney's Dance Beat is a better balanced vs. music game that this (and I should know, I cleared it!) These aren't even SONGS--you just hit random notes as generated by the machine and pray you randomly get the "good" power-ups so you can kill your opponent before he kills you. It's unmusical and completely random--two cardinal sins for any game. Fuck this bullshit. To add insult to injury, once you defeat a "legend of rock" you get to play an encore with him. Great! So now the camera is focusing on an awkwardly modeled Tom Morello (who?) instead of my character.

Complaint: Having to play every song in every tier to unlock the next is stupid bullshit. Please stop this bullshit in your next game. Fuck you, let me play the songs I want to play. If I buy a box set of music I don't have to listen to all the fucking tracks in order, what the hell.

Extras: More guitars and colors than ever, multiple palette swaps per outfit, anime sequences in between venues (?!), great bonus songs from real bands like Stone Roses and Kaiser Chiefs ("She Bangs the Drum" is easily the best song I've played in the game so far.) Definitely the best GH so far in terms of auxillary content.

Conclusion: It's Guitar Hero III. The changes to the formula (like the boss battles) are fucking distinguished mentally-challenged. Fortunately, 95% of the game is exactly according to the formula of GHII because Activision has lost the people who knew what they were doing and is afraid of killing this gift horse. Way better than this year's early 80s misstep and a good addition to the Guitar Hero series. Still, the formula is getting a bit long in the tooth, and I have absolutely no doubt that Rock Band is going to deliver the ultimate music game experience later this year!

PATEL OUT.

Ugh, boss battles sound :(  And clearing every song is :(  I hated when you got to higher levels and you basically had to clear them all in previous games.  You have to give us at least one gimme per tier in case there is a ridiculous song.

What's obnoxious is that every player has strengths and weaknesses--for example, I can fast-strum single notes til the cow come home, and I don't even notice triples any more, but 5 note runs up or down the fret board always seem to have me slip up in the middle.

I'm worried I'm going to make it to Tier 7/8 and get stuck on this one song for like 20 tries after blowing through the rest of the game and oh! I will make unhappy noises.

I just played the demo with a controller, got 93% accuracy on one song on medium.  I think I do better with a controller than with the guitar.

I was gonna get this today...and then my dreams were shattered.

In terms of JUST the guitar how is GHIII a full generation behind? I've only heard bad things about Rock Band's simple charts.

I agree, and worry that Rock Band will be structured the same way.  I bought the songs, let me play them however the fuck I want.  They can still keep that option for those who want it, but give me the choice just to mess around and not worry about scores and all that bullshit.

I'd like to play this just to play guitar for She Bangs the Drums. It's not even the best song on the album, but just playing a song from the Stone Roses would be awesome.

Apparently there are several songs you can only unlock by playing through the game in local co-op. That's pretty fucking bullshit. Full unlock codes can't come soon enough!

EDIT: OH GOD one of them is the Bloc Party song. And another is the Beastie Boys! FUCK YOU ACTIVISION, WHAT THE FUCK! WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS COOL!

"Sabotage" – Beastie Boys (Co-op Encore)
"Reptilia" – The Strokes (Co-op Encore)
"Suck My Kiss" – Red Hot Chili Peppers(Co-op Encore)
"Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll" – Blue Öyster Cult (Co-op Encore)
"Helicopter" – Bloc Party(Co-op Encore)
"Monsters" – Matchbook Romance (Co-op Encore)

I said in the GAF thread I was going to buy the 360 version...wtf was I thinking...

I'll just pay 50 bucks for the PS2 version since it doesn't seem to be that great anyway. Save the 50 bucks towards Rock Band. If my friend wants a second guitar he can buy the game himself when he gets a 360.

Played through three more tiers and a couple of bonus songs. Here are updated impressions:

Apparently there is no co-op quickplay. I have not been able to confirm this, but if that is true, what the fuck. When friends come over to play Guitar Hero, they want to 1) jump to the 3-4 songs they want to play 2) play on Easy while I play on Expert. If GH3 doesn't let you do that, it is utterly worthless as a party game and I have no idea what they were smoking.

Venues: The venues are hilariously awesome, and much better than just "bar/club/tour/big tour". Props to the environments team.

Patterns: Some songs (Cherub Rock, She Bangs the Drum) have pretty awesome patterns. But a lot of patterns are just too...okay, story time.

STORY TIME

Once upon a time there was a game called Guitar Freaks, which was a bit like Guitar Hero in some key ways. One of these is that it had a hardcore fanbase who loved to play the game. "Give us moar!" they shouted. "Harder! Faster! Stronger!" The developers didn't know how to make a song "stronger," so they made them harder, faster, cluttereder. What started out as an approximation of playing a musical instrument soon became a pure test of digital dexterity.

Eventually, the patterns got more and more convoluted, forcing players to pivot 6 times on a single note just for the challenge! The fact that this made the virtual instrument ten times harder to play than a real guitar was lost on the hardcore developers and the hardcore fanbase, each group desperately trying to one-up the other.

Meanwhile, everyone else stopped playing because the game just got stupid.

THE END

Guitar Hero III isn't there...yet. But it's definitely flirting on that disastrous precipice. Too many of the patterns feel "videogamey," with chords for singles and triples for no reason at all. Musicality has been replaced by masochism. I haven't gotten to tier 8, the final tier, yet, but by all accounts at that point the game well and crosses over into that "ludicrous" territory, creating songs that no sane human being would ever want to play, and replacing challenge with copious amounts of cheese.

Too bad.

Boss Battles: These are even worse than previously described. They might be fun on Easy or Medium, but on Expert, they are Puzzle Quest levels of retry distinguished mentally-challenged. Getting hit by "can't push a button" or "can't play for 5 seconds" debuffs goes from "what an inconvenience!" to "lose 2/3 of your bar." It's not balanced at all--you continue to lose energy on a "per note" basis. So instead of missing 4 notes when your opponent hits you with a debuff, you miss 30.

This means that every boss battle requires you to:
1) Get a power-up
2) Use it to keep your opponent from getting a power-up
3) Repeat until your opponent dies

You can't outlast your opponent--you have to kill him. And if you don't kill him as fast as possible, he's going to start attacking you, keeping you from getting power-ups, making him more able to kill you...etc.

In practice, this means that winning a boss battle on expert means:
1) Retrying 8 times until you get the right lucky combination of power-ups
2) Once you do, winning by KO in 30 seconds
3) ...so you don't ever hear the last 4/5 of the song

distinguished mentally-challenged.

Unlockables: No making of videos. :/

Overall, it's still good, but it's definitely not great. Patterns that rely on cheese instead of honesty when combined with serious oversights in quickplay and co-op make this hard to recommend. Rock Band is going to mop the fucking floor with this.

Bebpo says that the patterns on Normal are pretty mediocre and lack that "jam" quality of GH1 and 2.

Also, on Normal boss battles apparently have the opposite problem--not enough notes to kill them, so the battles drag on and on.

He also asked me to point out that there are a LOT of close ups of the creepy lip-synched singer. It's true. There are.

Yeah, my analogy didn't really make this clear. It's not just that the patterns are harder/goofier (though they are). The bigger issue is that they are increasingly disconnected from the actual songs. I've counted several instances of dropping down to a lower key for a higher note during a run...why would you do that? Silly. That's one thing GH1 and 2 were very, very good about--musical fidelity.

I also want to stress that the game is totally okay--if you like Guitar Hero, you could do a lot worse. But a lot of the fan made patterns on hacked GH2 discs are more fun than these official patterns, and that's just wrong.

Also, the boss battles are utter shit and I have no idea how they got left in the game. Nobody likes them. You don't even KNOW.

GUITAR HERO III CAN'T FIRE ME, I QUIT :maf

I reached my breaking point on Tier 7

The Disturbed song at 80% has a ton of

1+3, 2+4, 3+5 crawls up and down the finger board.

It's hard enough to do a 1+3->2+4 shift back and forth quickly. But when you have to SHIFT on top of that?

Bullshit.

GH3 is over, I win. On to Ratchet!

Apparently, a patch will be released on Tuesday that adds offline co-op quick play in the 360 version.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3164008

Plus, some guy at GAF says Guitar Center is selling the 360 bundle for 89.99. Looks like I might get the 360 version after all. The GH3 guitar can serve as bass in Rock Band.

On second thought, I can't play co-op in the 360 version since none of my friends will get that version anyway. :lol

It was pretty funny when we got there. It was 1 am and there were nearly a dozen employees just standing around doing nothing. There was a shitload of each version still available. One of the guys told us we were smart to come later, as there was a pretty big line at midnight. :lol

Ok. I can't link my game to my profile on guitarhero.com. Not a big deal, but an annoyance nonetheless.

Also, the 360 guitar is fucking broken when it comes to activating star power by putting your guitar vertical. It turns on out of nowhere and when I actually move it upright, it never EVER turns on. It's a worthless piece of shit. I should just sell this and buy the PS2 version. Why the fuck did I listen to my friend. He wasn't the one wasting his money.

I was able to acquire an X-plorer for next to nothing, so I just bought the stand-alone.  I played with the new one a bit and I still don't like it.

The one time I got to play with the X-plorer, I really didn't like it. :\ Hopefully I get a working guitar when I exchange. If the guitar is fucked up AGAIN, I'll just exchange for the PS2 game-only version. I might just do that the first time to avoid the possibility of getting extremely pissed off again. If Best Buy tries to give me shit, I'll just refuse to leave until I get store credit for the difference.

I love that he gets first shot at attacking and it's not uncommon for it to be something that will make you outright fail, like my friend the LEFTY FLIP.  It makes me wonder if Neversoft even play tested that battle on Expert.  Or maybe they're just pricks.

I just got the "Almost Got It" achievement.

Failed "One" at 94%

And I had that fucking riff down perfectly earlier in the song...I just choked. My heart was fucking beating out of my chest. Goddamn it.

But you know what? I'm not pissed. Because that was awesome...not fucking disgustingly unfair like Raining Blood. Fuck that notechart.
