Stupid youtube on the current state of students
« on: October 26, 2007, 04:33:10 PM »
Long winded, dull, melodramatic. While it strikes some good points, it's basically saying that chalkboards are our problem? Fuck you. I like those supposedly boring lectures, especially if it's for a history or psychology class. I like getting assigned reading material. I HATE webct. Whoever brings their notebook to class and gets on facebook instead of paying attention in class is an idiot. Yes, technology has changed the model of the average student. DO YOUR SHIT AND YOU WON'T HAVE A PROBLEM. Who cares if you are assigned a book that you never use. Use it on your own terms and teach YOURSELF you goddamn idiot.

What is the point of this video? What does being in debt after college have to do with anything? What does the average annual pay for someone in another country have to do with your education? Even if you had a minimum wage job, you'd still get more than them, so that information is irrelevant. Is it saying that technology has changed the landscape of our education? if so, that's a valid point, but in the end, the video is nothing more than numerous conclusive problems rather than offering up a solution.

Im not quite sure what the video as trying to say. It goes off on why university is not modern enough. But thn talks about how much time each student wastes online. Then it wants us to feel guilty about it by saying that we have a high standard of living.

Also, eating, studying, spending time on line and listening to music can all be done at the same time.

Impersonal, authoritative teaching has always been problematic to bear for the majority of students. It's dull as hell to sit through a non-interactive lecture full of abstract concepts in a class of 100 people, and to try hard to listen to a teacher that speaks like 2-3 times too softly, only reads course notes aloud that you can read on your own, doesn't know your name or ever addresses you. If they feel like their presence in class isn't needed and is a chore, is that so awful to think that many students are going to distract themselves with the means at their disposition? It's up to the educational system to make them feel like they're more important.

None of the teachers use a chalkboard, but in one class it's so hilarious, the teacher projects course notes from PowerPoint documents but you can't see a damn thing on screen but blurred out text, except if you're right in front of it.

In two class I and the others can understand roughly 20% of what the teacher says because their voice is muffled in the gigantic classroom.

that is fucking stupid.

and the quote at the beginning doesn't make any sense about information being structured in a way that makes no sense to the modern student considering you can just use the internet.  Fuck, my english class goes to the computer lab every thursday and I only have two english classes a week.  if you don't open your textbook at all, you are likely just a shit student.

I mean seriously, he's judging modern universities by Kansas State?

In my classes we go over some of the material, and we discuss it openly in class to keep people interested. I think it's fun. Most of the other work is done by yourself, mostly done by reading the book. I see nothing wrong with that, and I don't get why fuckers have to resort to using webct to turn in their crap or go to school.

Also, most of my teachers use power point for notes, but I see nothing wrong with that. It's still notes, it's still a lecture, and the notes are usually done the same way they would be done if they were written: minimalist, straight to the point. You're supposed to fill the notes in, the teacher only writes down the basic, rudimentary information.

on one hand, strictly dispensational education serves no-one well.

on the other hand, it's not like there's an instructional method out there that could make am nintenho or foc learn.

what to do, what to do

Get your teachers fired, mondain.

People need to stop acting like computer interaction can replace teachers.

that shot of the room looks almost like one of the lecture halls here....

Anyways, this is what you get when you sign up for a public university.  You wanna read facebook, not come to class or do the readings, then you better be ready to face the consequences.  School material will never always be relevant to "real life" or your future career.  People act like the world is supposed to cater to them or something.
