Guitar Hero III doesn't "feel" like its predecessors
« on: October 28, 2007, 11:20:28 PM »
I don't know.  Something is missing.  I can't quite pinpoint the exact reason, but the whole thing is off.  It's reminiscent of a big-budget popcorn sequel to an amazing original.  Y'know, where it's slicker with more production values, but everything seems off.  I guess it feels kind of soulless.

Hey, I like my fair share of popcorn flicks, but I'm well adjusted enough to know the difference between quality and production values!

I didn't really like Spider-Man 3!  Calling this the Spider-Man 3 of Guitar Hero makes sense.

the Transformers of Guitar Hero is 80s edition

yeah, I dunno. disgruntled_jojo came over this evening and we played like 3 songs on GH3 and then like 15 songs on a hacked GH2 disc. it wasn't just the patterns/songs...GH2 just *feels* better.

Yeah, I'm not really digging on Guitar Hero III.  I think the analogy that it is the Spider-Man 3 of this series is actually accurate.  I'll probably stick with Guitar Hero II.  I don't really have the acquaintances to pull off Rock Band.

If we're gonna argue what GH was the best, it was easily the first one. Cause it was about the music. You pattern whores may have enjoyed the technically superior GHII, but it had no SPIRIT. It was all songs I didnt give that much of a shit about. Rock the 80s at least had songs I LIKE, and GHIII does as well.

GHII also had some REAL shitty covers.

Patel's Guitar Freaks comparison comes to realization in a very serious way at Expert tier 8.  Raining Blood is just stupid.  And I can't play that shitty Dragonforce song for more than 3 seconds.

Otherwise, I've been pretty happy with the note charts on the songs I like.

Yeah, I used the unlock code to skip that shitty Slipknot song in Tier 7 (I could beat it, but why would I want to waste the time?) and Tier 8 Expert is just distinguished mentally-challenged unfun on parade.

Did you try out those songs that could only be unlocked with co-op or the cheat?  After playing them, I understand better why that decision was made.  Other than the Blue Oyster Cult song, which has some fun solos here and there, there is absolutely no reason to play those songs in single player.

You won't regret getting it on PS2. I kinda wish I just did that. But now that I've played online, I have to admit it's pretty damn fun.

I'll play Robo. I'm not familiar with the charts, but I'll manage. I did fine last night playing co-op expert.

What's your problem with Rock Band, TVC? The lack of SKU options? Difficulty? It can't be the price, as most people expected an even higher price for the total bundle.

Mainly impressions indicating that it's not a great solo experience coupled with it being not very desirable to have crappy plastic controllers decorating my living room.  My apartment is enough of a nerd hole already, I don't need plastic peripheral controllers everywhere.  Well, moreso than now.

Eh, they'll probably get them sometome soon.

I just want to repeat from my experiences with it, the game isn't really that hard by any means.  Not as impossible as some shit is in GH.  But in reality, it's probably better that way.  I've been sort of arguing with some of my friends about which game will be better (yes I know, total nerd wank, but whatever), and I'm pretty certain by this point Rock Band is clearly going to be.  The whole draw to the game is performing AS A BAND, and when you ARE playing in this mode, you aren't jsut responsible for your instrument, but for your whole band.  If someone fails pretty miserably during a song, you have to "save" them using your star power equivalent.  Being able to pass a song in Rock Band is going to be tons harder than in GH, as you have to be on the look out for every single aspect of the song, bot JUST the guitar.

I just wanted to say that to clear up some misconceptions of Rock Band's difficulty.  It's no fucking Through the Fire and Flames, but it's going to be just as, if not more, difficult.

yeah, my take on rock band is that it, like the wii, is more fun to speculate and imagine awesome gaming scenarios that, in all reality, will never, ever come to pass (and if they somehow *do* coalesce, there'll be 2, maybe 3 of them tops and localized to the first two weeks of common ownership) and you'll be stuck with a gimmicky collection of peripherals collecting dust and nerd dander in your dork crib.

note that this may not be true if you live in a dorm or work for a gaming magazine, where you're surrounded by your lazy stank-ass no-life kin!

i've gotta say, online play definitely helps this game's value.  my initial playthrough was an "average" experience. after playing online co-op and versus, it rose to "above average" status. yup, it's more of the same, but not feeling like an idiot by playing with another living being makes it worth the price of admission alone.  and the new wireless guitar is mad solid.  it's $10 cheaper at costco btw.

GH2 had a so so soundtrack with some awful covers, which is why in some ways I prefer Rock the 80s over it. If im playing a MUSIC game I wanna like THE MUSIC which is why the original GH will probably always be my favorite.

Fair enough. Other than my initial controller woes and the distinguished mentally-challenged boss battles, I find the game pretty damn fun. Yea, the timing is even more lenient but I don't feel it really detracts from the experience. Makes me feel like I've improved. And there's some clunkers thrown in there, but I really enjoy the song list.

I've left nearly every game I've gotten into where people have chosen that Dragonforce song, which is why I think people are choosing it; bailing out may affect stats.  It isn't like the people choosing the song are actually good at playing it --usually quite the opposite and they're even worse at it than I am.  And on top of being impossible to play and long as shit, the song is awful.
