Author Topic: Can someone, ANYONE, tell me if there's a way to convert mkv files? (Read 1234 times)

MAF and myself are stumped. I want to watch 720p episodes of Dexter on my TV, but they are in MKV files, always. I can get MKV to transcode-stream to the 360 via media center, but as a side effect the sound is out of sync, making the episodes unwatchable. This is probably because mkv files are shitty container files. I really don't know what to do here. I am pretty sure I was able to convert mkv files using some video apps on the Mac, but I still came up with the same audio sync prob.

Sorry. I might have asked this before actually, some time ago, when I DLed the complete season of a show in mkv by accident. The problem just popped up again with these Dexter episodes, that are only in mkvs for high resolution.

I have been playing the videos on my laptop and using its HDMI port to output the stream to my TV, but this isn't optimum.

no, its a really common problem

anime fansubbers use mkv to prevent their work being sold on ebay for instance

I imagine mkv related tools have come a long way since I tried to demux though

Let me give this a try.

I wonder why Dexter is only available in HD in mkv. Is there something that makes mkv an especially good container for hd content, video or audio, over the other containers?

I think the reason its popular is it can have multiple audio tracks, embedded fonts for the subtitles, chapters and is smaller then .avi for the most part

I believe it does 5.1 audio as well

oh and its open source, internet people love that

I am trying that first link you posted. It is doing its thing now. I will bump this tomorrow to see how it turns out (the file is like 1.5 gigs and I need to get ready for bed).

I'm pretty good at syncing audio and video, so as long as the separation goes cleanly, I should be good.

ffmpegx is re-encoding the extracted video stream to mpeg4 right now. Once that is ton, I will tr to dub the audio. It's in an ac3 file, which I am not familiar with working with, so I may encode it to something I know.

I gotta head to bed. The encoding is taking kind of long. Thanks for your help. I will report my findings tomorrow.

I am doing all the transcoding as slowly and thoroughly as possible, since I am converting an HD video and image quality is naturally a priority.

which links to a thread where the original thread is mentioned

and contrary to what i said then, it is now possible to convert .mkv to dvd

It looks like that first link works really well. As far as I could tell, there's no hit when it comes to video quality. I just have to dub when I get home.

Update: Things appear to be going well. Doing the dubbing now. It's a bit touchier since the size f the video file is making things a smidge unwieldy.

Had to transcode the AC3 to WAV. I couldn't get a good sync with the AC3. With WAV at least I know I could hack it up a bit if I need to correct timing. I don't know shit about using AC3s.
