dragonforce's inhuman rampage -- ne'er have i lol'd so much
« on: November 01, 2007, 03:45:29 PM »
as the story goes, i was at fred meyer with a wad of cash and nary a dvd or game i wanted in sight. somehow, i wandered out with a copy of essential trance volume 6 and dragonforce's "inhuman rampage," which my boss assured me was "like metallica, but more awesome."

i listened to the entire 56 or so minutes of it during my commute today. i think i spent the whole time laughing at it.

as i told tvc, this album is what you get when a bunch of nerdy nerds get together and engineer speed metal -- it's very technically proficient, and about as artistically compelling or elevated as a bowl of bacon gravy. it's 80's cartoon anthems set to hyper-produced speed metal, mixed with guitar tablature only a meth-jacked fifty-fingered bonobo on fire could play. i didn't think you could make music that was ALL power chords, synth effects, and spazzy hammer-ons. i was wrong.

the whole time i listened to 8 (or 9, i can't recall) identical sounding major chord eruptions -- guitar fugues, if there could be such a thing -- calling themselves individual "songs", i couldn't stop laughing. i imagined some scrawny wow guild leader with lank hair and an alienware pc smudged with dorito dust reverently pressing play on his zune, kicking "revolution deathsquad" into his playlist right as him and 38 other orcs or night elves or whatever slam into c'thun's lair and he wigs the fuck out.

this is THE funniest rock album ever. i didn't know you could fit as many metal cliches into one album as "inhuman rampage" does, and it is "where's waldo" esque hilarity to try and spot them all. just as one crescendo of power chords end, the lead's voice gets pitch shifted -- but that's not the end! there's some deejay style-scratching! silence! and then the lead screams about glory rising in the mountains of shadow! omg!

i give this all the lols in the known loliverse, with a viking helmet on. and a bottle of game fuel filled with 20-sided dice.

This album is so fucking awful, but I got it as a birthday present as a sort of joke because Through the Fire and Flames is still a fucking awesome guitar song.  The sad thing is, the members of the band are totally fucking serious.

ot, but about music reviews: i never ''got'' it. i'd rather listen to a sample of some songs instead of reading some guy's review about it, as opposed to filmreviews. it's like--music can't be described in words. not to me atleast. /real talk

Inhuman Rampage is easily the band's worst CD. It's so bad, in fact, that I've since put off ever seriously listening to them again.

I even use their songs as my alarm clock just so I can run out of bed to turn that shit off.

I'm previewing this album on iTunes right now, and WTF. First let me start by saying I'm a fan of power metal. Blind Guardian's Nightfall in Middle-Earth is something I've listened to weekly for years, I love old Maiden, and sometimes when I'm alone I jerk off while singing along with Nightwish.

Upon listening to iTunes clips and looking up songs on Youtube...I'm confused here. Where are the monster melodies and killer riffs? Just a preview yes, but it sounds like I'm hearing a poorly blended cocktail of power metal - but missing some key ingrediants. I'll download the album later tonight and give it a proper, FAIR AND BALANCED review. But it ain't sounding good so far

I love you.  You know this, right?

Anyway, Inhuman Rampage is good, but not great, save for a couple of songs.  If you want to hear Dragonforce at their best - and, if anything, this means their least all-songs-sound-the-same album - you need to hear Valley of the Damned.  The title track being one of the best album openers ever.

For Power Metal that is very technically proficient, has strong melodies and is not cheesy, I would suggest Gamma Ray, especially their latest album, Land of the Free Part II. Well, it's probably the least cheesy that Power Metal can get, anyway, the structures of the genre being somewhat of a limiting factor.

I hated it at first, but after accepting that they've pretty much completely abandoned the Power Metal aspects and moved to a much more Progressive sound, it started to click with me.  Still, it's like an entirely different band, but with Kakko's vocals.  Slowed down tempos, hardly any double bass, seven string guitars all over...  Probably the biggest WTF moment in metal for 2007.  With repeated listenings, a lot of the catchier melodies are jumping out at me, though, and it keeps getting more enjoyable each time.

Demi, check out Amorphis' new album, it's one of my favorites of the year.  The first track has the best blending of growling/death vocals and clean vocals.  Extremely catchy.

U.S. version = ???

Like you, I'm curious to how this turns out but, oh lawdy, it can never compare, obviously!  This just reeks of another shameless American raping of (what should be) a sacred UK show.  I don't even want to see what Fox has done to the US version of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.  No doubt Spaced will be horrendous.

I'm not into metal, but I thought this article from a few years back was pretty amusing.  It's a joint review of a history of the Norwegian metal scene and a War on Terror propaganda book from David Frum & Richard Perle.

Quote from: Mark Ames
Let me just say here that I had always thought that draft-dodgers like Perle (who snagglepussed from the Vietnam War, exit stage left) and Frum (who, as a Canadian, was born a draft-dodger) were just your run-of-the-mill corporate fegs, but after reading An End to Evil…dude. No seriously, du-hu-hude. Dude, I’m telling you, these chickenhawks fuckiiiiiiiiiin’ rock!

Seriously. They rock as hard as Burzum and Mayhem. The proof? First, both the Black Metalists and the Republican authors are obsessed with evil, as the title alone shows. Indeed, Frum is the author of the famous "axis of evil" line that has crippled Bush’s room for diplomatic maneuver. And Frum, like the metalists, got in trouble for boasting about how he’d made that line up–the same way that all the Black Metalists eventually got jailed for boasting about their murders. For their boasts, Frum got fired while the Black Metalists got rooms at the Comfort Inn. Gnarly.

Then there’s Perle, who, like Dead or Euronymous, has his own infamous Black Metal nom de roque: The Prince of Darkness. Arrrggghhh! Launch fireworks and pyrotechnics from front of stage, set off explosions, lower giant skull as The Prince of Darkness and David "Axis of Evil" Frum take to the stage in their End to Evil monsters of hardline ideology tour!

The similarities don’t stop there. Whereas Vikernes and other Black Metalists saw heathen Norway in a life-or-death struggle for existence with the Semitic tribes’ Judeo-Christianity, Perle and Frum see Judeo-Christian America under threat from Islam. And both have the same solution: War, dude!

FZero music is probably the best comparison for Dragonforce.

I sent it to a friend to today who, without my prompting, replied: "This sounds like an old Nintendo racing game"
