When did the Joker stop being a fun character?  He was only ever interesting as the classic foil to Batman.  If both of them are SUPER PISSED and DARK and OUT FOR REVENGE where does that leave you?  A shitty crime story?

When was it ever said that the Joker was going to be SUPER PISSED and OUT FOR REVENGE? This is the same Joker we all know.  He's cruel yet hysterical, he uses puns at innappropriate times, etc.  He is STILL Batman's foil.  He just looks like he fits into Nolan's Gotham instead of what people are used to him looking like.

And TVC, he's not a hobo.  He's a man who puts on make-up and has some sort of distortion to his smile, like a burn or cut or something, to achieve his act of being the Joker.  That's a way that describes the character that makes it fit into Nolan's world.  If you had a Nicholson Joekr in a movie the thrives on a more realistic approach, it wouldn't fit.  At all.  Chemicals like the ones he falls into don't bleach your skin.  They fucking kill you.

Yeah, I enjoyed the realism in that fight in the Tibetan mountains (or wherever), and I especially enjoyed the realism of that fight on the monorail train on the 10-story framework running through the middle of the city.  So realistic, at times I thought I could detect the faint smell of vinyl wafting off Batman's extremely realistic costume.  The most realistic part was when he realistically glided with his practical and realistic cape, which was grounded in realism the way it hardened all up into a glider at the touch of a button.  And the realistic car climbing up realistic buildings and realistically jumping across rooftops.  It was so fucking realistic from start to finish I began to believe in Batman like a kid believes in Santa, and wanted to write him a letter thanking him for saving Gotham

I like Batman Begins!  I freely admit that I like trolling it though (people that think Nolan and Bale are gods make me roll my eyes), and I do overall kind of like the original Burton Batman better.  Say what you will about grittiness, I dig Burton's unified visual style, and I think such style is more true to comic books than Nolan's gritty takes.  I think Gritty + Comic Books and I think of the shit comics Image inflicted on us all, thank you very much.

Anyway, I liked Batman Begins, but this Joker thing just rubs me the wrong way.

I knew it would be a great target from the beginning, because the fanboys had practically indoctrinated the movie before it was even out.  Watching them pray week, by week, trying to determine if it "had legs" was hilarious.  That thread was a near cousin to the Blu Ray/HD-DVD thread when it came down to sad, sad rah rahing.  They so wanted the movie to be great and perfect that they wouldn't let anyone hint otherwise.

I don't know, when you say it rubs you the wrong way, I think it rubs me the right way.  I think Nolan had and still does have a very interesting approach that hasn't been represented in the Batman franchise before.  And yeah, it's just fucking Batman, but oh well, I like Batman, an reading Batman, and watching Batman. *shrugs*

The Burton flicks are pretty great, yeah.  But it almost seems like a parody of the whole franchise...I don't know.  I like it when the comics got a bit more serious and were a bit more focused on character overall allegorical aspects, so that's why Begins is my favorite.  Even though it doesn't stand for anything, it's just a pretty cool style that I've been wanting from a Batman movie.

Oh yeah, I know.  It's just endlessly silly to see people whom only feel validated about their opinion (is it really an independent opinion if it is contingent on validation?) if something is successful on a large scale.  It reminds me of some of the dumber critics around today that publicly make proclamations about how there are no classic books written today, or no philosophers that will ever be remembered.  Completely blind to everything that's in front of them.
