A promising new treatment that has been proven to destroy cancerous liver tumors. Dr. Steven Curley, a research pioneer at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, developed the current radio wave ablation treatment of cancer cells. The details, revealed in the upcoming issue of the medical journal “Cancer”, shows how harmless radio waves were used to kill liver tumors in animals with a 100 percent success rate and without side effects. The inventor of this device is not a doctor or a researcher, but a cancer patient named John Kanzius. For most, a cancer diagnosis can be devastating, but for Kanzius it was a call to action. “What made me think I couldn’t cure cancer? Nobody else was doing it! (Laughs)” A radio and TV engineer and former station owner, Kanzius, who suffers from Leukemia, hated his chemotherapy and saw its devastation on others. “Every third week I ran into some of the same patients over and over again and to see their smiles disappear within a few weeks and watch their hair disappear and watch to cling to their mothers asking what’s wrong with me was heartbreaking.” So Kanzius, who had been building radios since childhood, figured radio waves could be harnessed to target cancer cells. “Instead of talking to people I was talking to cancer cells,” said Kanzius. He envisions future cancer treatments to work something like this. A patient would be injected with tiny metal nanoparticles, which would be carried through the bloodstream by a targeting molecule and attach by as many as 1,000 to only cancerous cells. The patient would then be exposed to an energy field created by radio waves. While the patient would feel nothing, the nano particles would generate enough heat to destroy their cancerous host cell. Kanzius demonstrated just how easily nano particles could be used as receivers. “He’s injecting gold nano particles into the liver.” After a piece of liver was injected, it was placed into an energy field of low frequency radio waves. Within seconds, the areas injected with nano particles were heated to the point of actually cooking the liver. The surrounding meat was unscathed. But Kanzius isn’t just cooking meat in his Erie, Pennsylvania lab, his machine is being heralded by some of the world’s best minds in cancer research. “It has the most fascinating potential I’ve seen in anything in my twenty years of cancer research,” said Dr. Steven Curley. He’s a research pioneer at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He developed the current radio wave ablation treatment of cancer cells and looks forward using a non-invasive approach like Kanzius envisioned. “Its just one of those things. It’s the right guy, in the right place, at the right time with the right idea,” said Dr. Curley. “I want to see the first patient be treated and the doctor say you are healed.” Meanwhile, John Kanzius continues to undergo chemotherapy for his Leukemia. His machine should be ready for human trials within three years.
