And yes, and a handful of dust was tossed in my eyes in the form of its pretty visuals, but really, the magic didn't last for two full play sessions.  Anyone that still thinks this is a good game is deluding themselves.

Biggest problem?  Taking a game with notoriously fiddly controls and trying to cram the same control scheme into fewer buttons just doesn't work.  The proof in this pudding tastes like. . .the insanely low difficulty level, even for an MGS game; lowered to compensate for the game's controls that would make flat out RE-style tank controls seem like they had the finesse of an especially fancy mime.  These two critical flaws, in my opinion, cancel out the neat-ish gameplay structure.

Maybe konami focused on the multiplayer mode that nobody in existence has ever played in history.  Wise use of resources, and wise to see that's what the rehash is also focusing on.  Hot tip, Konami, if you do another one of these on the PSP, save us the headaches by shitcanning that whole third dimension thing.  Actually, you should consider doing that in the core series, too.  You clearly have no idea what the fuck you are doing.

so it was too easy and had a bad camera?  is that something hardcore fans (I'm not a fan) could get used to?

probably the worst MGS game was Ac!d.  the game was so easy that anybody could beat it as long as you didn't shoot the barrels next to you.  the big problem was that one small room with maybe 5 enemies would take half an hour.

I also agree that MGS probably can't work at all on a portable unless 2D.

I like Acid 2, and I can probably still admit that Acid 1 was a decent enough launch game, or at least interesting enough.

I played a friend's psp, I think he said the story was the strong part.

nintenho: better graphics; better interface; faster gameplay; and much MUCH better map layouts. they also added ridiculous boob bounce.

What do you mean by "even for an MGS game"?  MGS games are pretty challenging even on Normal and the higher difficulties are really hard.

I think that the control problems have more to do with the PSP's poor analog nub than Konami.  I was able to handle the controls after awhile.  A bigger problem is the shitty camera that doesn't let you see far enough to play in a stealthy manner.  I can't count the number of times that I ran into an enemy that was just 5 feet away.  The weird radar doesn't help much.  Konami should have compensated for the poor camera with a much effective radar, even if it had diminished the realism.

I love MGS but I only played MGS:PO halfway through because the annoyances were just too much.

I've PSP-less, but I wanted to give props to Subsistence's online multiplayer, which was pretty awesome/short lived.  I usually got wasted pretty quick, but watching the high-level players after the fact never ceased to be entertaining.  If only Konami hadn't pulled the plug as I was starting to get slightly better then mediocre.

And should a PSP ever find its way into my hands, the first game I fire up will likely be a Konami product.  They've just put out way too much awesomeness to ignore.

Portable Ops is fine, and gets more challenging the further you get into it.  The game is really all about recruiting and getting shit though; it's MGS Pokemon.   :P  Playing it at 333mhz makes it a hell of a lot smoother, too.

I do wish that they went with the cell shading style of Ac!d 2 though.  That game looks nice...I need to play it, come to think of it.  I'm not much for strategy games, but I do like Ac!d.

I still haven't finished MGS:PO. The controls irritated me and this is coming from a big fan on MGS.

I really enjoyed MGA, it was the first PSP game I bought. I haven't played MGA 2. I should rent that sometime.

Personally I couldn't stand the cell-shading in MGA2 (liked the game though), plus I had a very very hard time trying to get into MG:PO.

Dude, MGS games are easy. I played through 2 and 3 on hard or very hard, and I am generally a pussy gamer.   Three is another game where they let the gameplay mechanics get away from them so they compensated by making the game easier.

I enjoyed MGS:PO for about 15 hours or so but after awhile the formula got a little stagnate.

The big problem to me is that there's no real variety to the gameplay. Each mission requires pretty much the same strategy. The recruiting aspect is fun until you realize that there's not a lot to do with the guys you have.

The boss fights were a mixed bag because of the controls. While its easy enough to sneak around and knock dudes out, actually trying to fight anyone is kind of bleh. And the part where you fight the

was annoying because IIRC there wasn't anything in the gameplay up to that point that really educated you on how to play that fight.

So yeah, fun for awhile but was maybe 2-3 hours longer than it needed to be with too many stale environments.

I've been meaning to pick Portable Ops.  I won't now.  Thanks, TVC.  I was hesitant about playing MGS on portable.  Those games should stay on console.  Also, while I loved MGS3, I could not stand the clunky controls and from your impressions it appears that it's only gotten worse with the PSP incarnation of the series.

I've pretty much stayed away from all of the MGS games on the PSP for good reason.

MGS4, though, will kick all ass ever in the history of kicking or ass.
