So, how about that Hollywood Writer's Strike?
« on: November 05, 2007, 12:26:49 PM »
I'm surprised that there hasn't been a lot of talk about this on this forum.

Frankly, I'm worried. Reality shows are already taking up a large amount of time on our networks, and now everyone's just going to overdo it. Plus, there are no more talk shows (starting immediately) possibly no new South Parks, and many shows, such as 24, which kicks ass, may have to stop eight episodes into production.

So, when is this going to end? I think it will be sooner than later, but that's just me hoping that it doesn't get worse. I mean, we have enough films in production right now to last us until the end of 2008, but if it doesn't get any better soon, lord knows what will happen.

So, what will the TV/ Film industry do in a long strike? I've already mentioned reality shows sadly, but for film this may encourage documentaries, and for the first time, they may enter the mainstream if the strike lasts for a long time.

The WGA (Writer's Guild of America) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have disagreed on how much writer's should get of DVD and internet profit. So the WGA has gone on strike. Almost every writer in hollywood is a part of WGA so almost all TV shows and movies have been effectively postponed (with the exception of some reality tv shows). If you try to write for a tv show or movie during the strike you will be banned from the WGA for life which means you will not get credit for your work or the benefits from rerun profits and such.

This strike is only going to be bad for both sides as the consumer will just go to different medias if the strike lasts to long. Which will financially hurt networks and put writers out of jobs. This strike isn't going to be a good thing for anybody

The only non-reality TV shows I religiously watch:

Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Southpark
Sarah Silverman (will probably stop, it's kinda MEH this year)

How so? People shouldn't be allowed to be greedy bastards and hamper peoples enjoyment by not working. If you don't like your job then find something else.

BTW, does anyone know if Stargate Atlantis (or the movies) will also be hampered by this?

Unions and Guilds exist to protect an individual's rights against a corporate entity. Without them most people would be getting screwed over constantly.

Symbios, you are fucking distinguished mentally-challenged.

I'm glad they are on strike. They deserve more.

And for that matter, if it lasts long enough, Hollywood will inevitably begin to purchase the rights to more independent films, which is a winning situation for me, since I'm an aspiring filmmaker.

Man that would be horrible for gamers. The WGA would just end up unionizing all the videogame writers like they have been aiming for. Then they would go on strike for a cut of the videogames profits leading to this same situation again.

I just imagined conan being speechless.

aren't most good videogame writers (tim schafer..yeah) also game designers?  I doubt they could give two shits if the WGA tried to unionize them.

Why do you care what your tax money does? You wouldn't pay it if you didn't have to.

You are a drain on our economy and will never contribute anything to society, unlike the writers who toil and work their asses off to provide entertainment for the plebes.  They deserve a bigger piece of the action, and you deserve to have a slice of shut-the-fuck-up pie.

According to AICN, they are all on strike. Like the entire cast, everyone.

So, while we still have new episodes, we won't for too much longer.

And the Lost situation makes me really, really sad  :'(
