I watched The Devil and Daniel Johnston today
Overall it was a good documentary. Not as great as I thought it would be, but still good; seemed a bit too long, and it dragged towards the end.
I found Johnston's story to be very interesting. He truly is a mad genius; even as a kid his talent was evident, as the various 8MM films he shot portray.
His music is interesting. Let's face it, he can't sing, but neither can Bob Dylan. I got the impression that he's a good songwriter and melody creator, but he's not great at brining his songs to life. Very similar to Robert Johnson, who wrote a lot of the blues staples that were later mined by British bands in the 60's and 70's; Johnson's version of Crossroads is very raw, but when you hear Cream's version it sounds amazing. It's no wonder artists like Beck and Pearl Jam have found success covering Johnston's music.
8/10
I'm going to watch Sin City later tonight after I eat and head off to my dad's practice (to clean up)
