TONITE: I watch. . .
« on: November 09, 2007, 01:00:08 AM »
. . .The Departed, and I determine whether or not it deserves to sniff the shit of Children of Men.

Before I watch, does anyone here think The Departed deserved best picture, or is the general concensus that it was a pity win?

Well, the Director oscar was the pity oscar.

The Academy was so fucking stupid it didn't even nominate CoM for best picture... and it gave the best editing oscar to the good but inferior Pan's Labyrinth.  In 20 years everyone who didn't vote to nominate CoM is going to either be dead or put to death.

Argh, Pan's Labyrinth is totally great, but how could anything win the editing category when put up against CoM?  Those long takes will probably never not be impressive!

Also, a few minutes in to The Departed, and Jack is fucking amazing me.  He really is one of the best American actors ever.  He gets criticized for, well, always being Jack Nicholson, with the same vocal patterns and the same facial expressions, but when he's on and in a role, he's so awesome and hardcore.  It's so clear when he gives a fuck about a role.

Yeah, Blu Ray.  It's not a particularly impressive transfer.  I have it paused right now and there's quite a bit of visible, unintentional grain.  It's kind of a trip seeing a crappy looking modern movie after working through 3 pristine looking 20+ year old flicks.

But Scorsese isn't an impressive visual director to begin with, so it's not like it's taking anything away.

Dudes, Matt Damon's accent is terrible.  Fuck authenticity, it sounds like he's Bugs Bunny's cousin or something.  And I *like* Damon.

HD DVD

I'd imagine it's the same either way.  Way too soft, and quite drab.  I'm sure a lot of it is the way it was filmed, but...there were times I thought I was watching an upscaled DVD.

Casino, on the other hand, is a Scorsese flick with a rock-solid HD transfer.  It's just beautiful.  The Aviator came out this week, and it's gorgeous, too.

Leo is the final De Niro in the Scorsese lifechart

And yes, Aviator is out on HD DVD and Blu Ray - surprisingly, it was not stripped of all the special features from the DVD set, and remains intact.

I will have to nab that.  I am actually a pretty big Leo booster.  He is a talented actor, and he's gotten pretty decent at picking good roles after a fairly rough period.

The only problem I have with The Aviator is Cate Blanchett's Katherine Hepburn - she did a good job, but I almost wish she hadn't tried to sound like her.  It's impossible to do a Katherine Hepburn voice without it sounding like a vocal caricature.

i think the departed is pretty great. it doesn't have the sheer momentum and visual exuberance of goodfellas -- nor are its choices of pop music nearly as inspired. so it probably was a makeup oscar to some degree. but dicaprio and damon are really good, in really different ways -- dicaprio's immediacy and vulnerability, the sense damon conveys of a man falling apart behind an increasingly false exterior. i watched infernal affairs earlier this year, and the departed actually loses some of that movie's geometric plotting and allegorical chill -- they're interesting to compare

my problem with com's ending was that it wasn't ambiguous enough, and any interpretation other than the obvious one is the result of either a) cognitive dissonance; or b) a massive contrarian streak.

I've been watching mostly foreign movies, so one thing that is painfully sticking out to me about the acting in The Departed:  All the big name actors are doing great jobs, but incedental characters, characters that just have one line or something, the drop in quality is huge.  In Children of Men, even people that just have one or two lines appear to be like, pros, but in The Departed, any actor that you see that you do not know the name of, chances are they will deliver any lines they have kinda like, badly.  I think that's just a difference between good foreign films and the american way of making movies.

Just over an hour in, and the movie is losing me.

It's decently made and Jack and Leo are great, but this is all about the plot, nothing thinky or heavily thematic about it.  And for a movie about cops and moles and the like, it's really not doing anything special.  After 4 seasons of The Shield, this is all pretty much zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

It's pretty funny that when Scorsese was interviewed, the reason he gave for initially not wanting to do it is exactly what you're complaining about; it was a plot-based movie rather than a character-based movie, which is what he likes to do.

warcock:  Children of Men paints what feels like a fairly realistic, atmospheric near future.  Mankind is on the brink of extinction, and not just because of the sterility issue.  The movie is increidbly immersive, and really, really nice looking.

Despite having a science fiction/speculative setting, it touches on a number of relevant themes, from religion, to terrorism, and to how near mankind is from destroying itself at any given moment.  Despite dealing with Heavy Things, the movie never feels particularly preachy, though it does walk a fine line.  Also, despite dealing with heavy things, it's doesn't feel like a particularly heavy movie.  It spends some time establishing itself (this didn't bug me because the movie looks great and is very immersive, although some people apparently think it's too long), but once it gets moving, it's really a stone's throw away from being an adventure movie.

The actual plot, the movement of the story, is really fairly thin.  I felt like the whole purpose of the movie was to give me an overview of this near future, realistic world.  The whole movie feels really real.

Performances are fantastic, all around, and there are even some great action sequences, most notably a great gunfight towards the end.  And the whole movie looks jizzingly awesome.
