December 4 is the date you'll need to watch out for; that's the day you'll be able to download and play Halo. Yes, Halo as in the Xbox game, through Marketplace, on your Xbox 360.

Microsoft is introducing games it has published for the original Xbox on XBL Marketplace, with the eventual plan to bring as much of the back catalogue across as possible.

Games cost about 1200 Microsoft points (about ten quid), which according to us puts them a little over what you'd pay for them second hand.

The initial list of downloads includes Halo, Fable, Fahrenheit, Crimson Skies: High Road To Revenge, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3. All good then, apart from maybe Crash.

And if that wasn't enough, films on demand, though not confirmed for the December 4 date, aren't far away. Studios such as Warner Bros are potentially lined up for the service, so we can look forward to films such as The Dark Knight, The Assassination of Jesse James and I Am Legend appearing eventually.

Films will cost less than a fiver and come in 720p resolution. You have 14 days to start watching a film once it has downloaded. Once you started watching a film, you have 24 hours to finish it. After that, the film deletes itself from your hard drive. It's basically an online rental service then, like the US Video Marketplace.

What do these new additions mean for the future of Xbox Live Arcade? Does the PS3's PSOne download service now look horribly dated? It's going to be an exciting 2008 in the download space, for sure.

Not only they can add achievements, they can also add online support for some games, like Halo for example.

I hope this doesn't mean that they've ceased BC updates. I still have Painkiller, Commandos Strike Force, and the two Brothers in Arms games sitting here.

That would be mean.

since in order to get these working, they need to update BC, and not releasing the update for free like usual would suck total.

it's possible that they would add achievements to downloadable Xbox games, so you will have at least a reason to buy them again on the marketplace.

This is actually really, really awesome and they're not a terrible price. A little steep. but not bad.

Now I hope Sony gets on the same bandwagon and starts releasing PS2 games, since they obviously removed BC on the 40 so they could sell them.

I can see where this is heading. Towards the end of this generation, I expect we'll see some of the earlier 360 titles available in downloadable form (look for another overpriced HDD, maybe a 250 GB version). This would ease people into getting used to downloading newer full-sized games on consoles. Then, on the Xbox 720 launch, most launch games will be available for download day and date with their retail releases. I think this is the beginning of that transition.

good news, i guess. it would be nice if they had some sort of upgraded visuals along with the releases though. BC was not even that good, i couldn't stand the performance of some games.

at least my elite will be useful now.

omg awesome. I might need to trade in some stuff for a 120 GB HD but I'll wait until I see how big the downloads are (games like halo 1 could fit on a CD) and how much they compress them plus there will probably be a price drop around that time.

I don't care much for achievements, but if online isn't included it will be the biggest failure in videogame history.

I'm not sure what you mean by this because there wasn't any online in Halo, only system link.
