just finished ratchet, which actually gets quite good late, when you've got your full arsenal and the challenge kicks in. i think i would've liked it much better if it had let me turn up the difficulty at the outset. i don't know why developers insist on locking hard modes away. whatever. i'm going to play a bit of sin and punishment, just to forget what high definition looks like, and then start in on mr gay

I did something similar by playing and completing SM64 before I started on Galaxy. Never actually finished the game before, mainly because I never felt it stood up to the originals. I still find alot of the stars annoying to get but the Bowser stages became my favorite in design (and music).  By the time I got done with it I was so used to the mechanics and graphics of the game that the jump to Galaxy was quite jarring. Not just in a visual leap but how fluidly everything controlled and animated.

Didn't I tell you so? ;)

I'm also going to finish R&C before moving on to Mr Gay.  School stuff came up just when the game got fun.  I finished beating the Pirate Ship level and got the data from the computer.  How much longer do I have to go?  Distant mentioned something about the Captain so I'm guessing that I'll have to fight the pirates again.

uh...i guess you did call it! you've got seven or eight planets left i think.

as for mr. gay, it gets off to kind of a clumsy start. a prologue that needlessly ties the spacey setting to the musty old mushroom kingdom. an initially jarring camera. the shock of going back a generation visually. even the music is cloying at first. but having played through that first egg galaxy, i like what i'm seeing. it's funny how quickly you adapt to the initially mindbending spherical playfields -- they're like portal's portals in that respect. each little planetoid presents you with some fresh little obstacle to work through. it's too early to say how good it is, but it's clearly going in the right direction -- away from collection, away from repetition, away from what passes for 'exploration' in videogames -- towards the linearity and stage-by-stage inventiveness of the great 2d mario games. let's see how it develops as its level design ramps up.

i'm having a control issue, though. it's not the pointing or the waggle, which are perfectly unobtrusive. it's the analog stick on the nunchuck. which is inexplicably convex and tiny. i'm tempted to look for a third-party replacement, but i'm already fed up with wii-related expenses

Huh, you're right, I never noticed that the Wii control stick is much smaller than both the 360s and PS3s.

It looks surprisingly good on my HDTV. I was afraid it would look as bad as it did on the demo tv at EB/GS.

yea i think my tv has a lot to do with it.  i hear it looks pretty good on plasmas.  but my aquos brings out a little TOO much detail and exaggerates flaws like no other.

You're *probably* a little over half way through R&C.

I went in with low expectations graphically for this game. I was expecting Twilight Princess levels of blurriness but instead I was pretty surprised on how good it looked. It's still a bit blurry and jaggy but it's definitely a leap above anything the Gamecube could do. The art style and high frame rate really help it too. Also my opinion might be hampered by the fact that I played SM64 to completion right before starting Galaxy. It may not be as sharp as the stuff I've seen on 360/PS3 but it's definitely not ugly.

Yep.  I was running off of walls and cliffs because I don't have 'finesse' with the analog stick.  I never had that problem with the GC version, I think it's the nunchuck as well.  There's something off with it's impementation, or I just don't have the hang of it.  I've never really had a finesse problem with another analog stick though so I was glad to read someone else having little issues.  I feel like I have loose sloppy control over Mario ala Zelda PH controls rather than razor sharp Mario Sunshine controls.

It's a little disappointment in a fantastic package though.

I just finished getting the Dimensioner before the captain stole it from me.  The game is much harder all of a sudden, which is great.  Like Drohne said, the game would have been much better if the difficulty had been higher from the start.  Also, I wish the starfighter levels and decryptor minigames were optional.  They're some of the worst filler material I've ever seen in a high profile game.

man, nintendo just can't help themselves with the minigames and the time attacks and the races against water galactic mario -- and the first 'hidden' star i've encountered was a bit lazy as well. but the game's content-to-filler ratio still seems better than mario 64's -- and far better than sunshine's. 20 stars in i'm liking it a lot. it's style is closer to mario 64's than i'd initially thought, but the level design manages to keep things fresh and inventive and pleasingly weird. another comparison to ratchet is perhaps useful: ratchet occasionally turns you upside-down as well, but it keeps its camera decidedly right-side-up. galaxy has no such scruples, and that little device of turning the world sideways or upside down really does put things in a new perspective -- mario in 3d is no longer new, so galaxy has sourced its newness elsewhere.

drohne, music impressions, please. I'm pretty lenient on gameplay as long as it fills certain expectations (which Galaxy seems to do), but music is the main thing I'm worried about. I just don't want it to be like 2 good tracks with everything else being mediocre. Nintendo needs to return to the music of old.

the music is good. it mixes the sort of smash-brothersy new stuff with timely rearrangements of old mario songs. some of the tracks are kind of sickly-sweet, but it's a huge improvement on the listless, joyless music in sunshine and new smb

Drohne, why didn't you warn me about Mr Gay's graphics?  I almost went blind when I put it in for a quick preview.  Luckily, I still have a couple levels left in R&C before I have to go through that torture again.

bobobo amirox says it looks like a 360 game in 480p

it probably looks worse than god of war II. but at least it's 60fps.

Nope. 60fps all throughout. Did you read it on IGN? Matt makes lots of typos.

Galaxy doesn't look good at all. I don't care for the visual style. It's like a giant glazed donut. Perfect for the fatty nintards.
