Nintendo Delivers: Heroes, if just for one day!
« on: November 13, 2007, 07:41:51 PM »
I am 10 minutes in, but my worst fears have already been confirmed.  The game looks like shit on a decent TV :(  It's a shame, because it looks like the game plays really well, but if the Ratchet vs Zack thing taught us anything, it's that interesting visuals make up for mediocre gameplay, and that substandard visuals drag down potentially great gameplay.

I'm going to have to play this on SDTV.  It's too much to ignore on the HDTV.  But on the SDTV, I get no widescreen.  This is so totally lose-lose.

EDIT:  Update.  In honor of Nintendo delivering what may very well be the first truly notable platformer since Mario 64, I shall say nothing but good things about Nintendo, the Wii, and the DS.  This includes me holding back on graphical and technical complaints (unless I am specifically asked about the issues I am experiencing and what not).

NINTENDO AM AWESOME!  AWESOME AM NINTENDO!

Is it too jaggy? That was my primary issue when I played it.

Also, we have 2 threads on this already. :P

I think you need to calibrate your TV.  Galaxy obviously doesn't look next gen but I'm not seeing any serious problems with image quality.

My TV is fine.  It's just that this is what an upscaled game looks like.  It ain't pretty.

yeah

I play it on a 32 inch 720p JVC widescreen WITHOUT component cables, how do you think I feel?  :lol

I really just don't care anymore.  Wii games look shitty. *shrugs*

I'm on a 50"er here.  Extrapolate and think how I feel!

Still, the game appears to be fuck awesome, so I will live.  I will try to fuck around with some settings to see if I can't get rid of some of that nasty ass aliasing later, but I am not getting my hopes up.  Aliasing is aliasing.  You can't really hide it without fucking with the resolution.

My Samsung DLP (720p) does really well with most 480p content (480i is a nightmare, of course) and calibration was a big part of that.  Obviously upscaling is never ideal but there shouldn't be such a large difference between your SDTV and HDTV.

edit: Compared to my Panasonic CRT I'd say Wii Sports looks better on my HDTV, Galaxy is tied, and a GC game like Fire Emblem: PoR looks much better on the CRT despite running in progressive scan mode on my HDTV.

My SDTV is half the size of my HDTV.  It's aliasing.  That's 100% of what the image problems are.  Calibration can't hide the fact that the game is rendering at a significantly lower resolution than my TV's native.

No, but calibration can make aliasing more or less obvious.  If I turn on DNIe my TV looks like shit with any signal that isn't at least 720p.  I'm comparing a 46" HDTV to a 36" CRT SDTV.

I wonder how it looks on a CRT HDTV?

I'm using rear projection here.

Gotta say that once you get into the spacey areas, the aliasing isn't as much of a problem, really.  It's only in the more "crowded" areas where there are lots of lines around.  In areas like that, there're bound to be a few glaring aliasing issues, but luckily, the game doesn't have a lot of areas like that, once you get to the levels.

It looks very nice on my 32" Pana so it's hard for me to get the complaints people are giving out.
I can kind of imagine problems at 50" though  :lol

Last gen still looks good on CRTs though.  480I/P really wasn't meant for HDTVs.

My Samsung CRT HDTV makes PS2 and Xbox games look ace. I have a feeling it would do the same for Wii.
