Wii component cables

I just bought some and Metroid Prime 3 in the hope that I can warm my Wii up before Galaxy comes out on the 29th. These cables had better make the picture slightly bearable  :'( Anyone here have them (the cables)? make much of a difference?

BrandNew got it.  Even in the improved component picture, text and certain 2dy things look blurry.

I got the official component cables and they seem to make a difference even on a SDTV.  But like the others have said, the WII still won't look that great.   The best looking WII games are still going to look like GC games with smoother framerates.

Indeed.

In some cases, I think folks may actually find they prefer the 480i output, however.  The Wii does use some sort of flicker filter in 480i, but this often hides various other defects and can be worthwhile.  It varies from game to game and TV to TV.

never thought about trying 480i w/ the wii.  but now that you mention it, i may give it a go.  the softened 480p look w/ my tv is .  and hey, welcome to the bore dark10x.

There's a huge difference between composite and component on a HDTV.  With composite things are a blurry, jaggy mess.  With component games range from quite nice looking (Wii Sports looks sharp, although extremely simple) to a jaggy mess (Fire Emblem: PoR).  Retro (2D) games look fantastic.  Obviously this depends on your set's scaler and how the set is set up.

Okay tried the cables, the improvement was pretty drastic, to be honest. The Wii channels screen looked nice and sharp as opposed to quite blurry and flickery. Played Prime 3 for an hour, didnt look too bad, some really bad jagginess in spots but at least the picture was sharp enough. Havent tried any VC games with it yet, might give Super Castlevania IV a go tonight.

Metroid Prime 3 is fantastic, VA is wierd but I suppose they were trying to advance the series or something. Samus' friends are shitty. Controls really good. Music made me smile, instantly brought back memories of the other Prime games. Title screen music was awesome

I can't believe that Nintendo had the gall to cheap out on their video out chips JUST WHEN everyone is buying 1080p HDTVs. Imagine how shitty Wii games look on my Bravia. How can you appreciate the few worthwhile games on that system when everything looks dull and is filled with dithering and hideos brown tints? I still can't believe how well GameCube games look when they're played with component cables on the original system, even on a 1080p TV.

Why would people buy VC roms when a modded Xbox makes them look 5x better, and plays them for free?

This image quality shit is the biggest irritant of this generation of consoles, by far.

Mondain, 480P looks shit on 1080P tvs regardless of upscaling, video signal, cable quality, etc.  Stick with SDTVs for last gen.

Furthermore, a lot of HDTV owners never even use it properly and end up with standard cable and a DVD player hooked via composite.  I'm sure most Wii owners are sticking with the included composite cables and have no problems with the image quality.  Nintendo realized this unfortunate fact and took advantage of it.  It ended up working out very well, I'd say.

My cousin had 4 plasmas/lcds in his home and they were all hooked up to cable boxes or DVD players with composite.  He was shocked at the difference when I replaced them with component cables.

I know, my brother has a 40 something inch Plasma he spent like 3k for yet when I tell him to buy component cables he says "looks fine to me"

GameCube with component is 480p, but it looks absolutely glorious. I've tried it on this 1080p Bravia and it's fantastic. I can't believe the richness of the colors.

This is why I'll shun most major Wii games, including Super Mario Galaxy, and wait for a backward-compatible Wii-2 with HDMI out and upscaling functions to even boot them up.

Mondain, do you why the IQ is bad?  If the Wii is just an overclocked Gamecube shouldn't it sport similar IQ over component?

The Gamecube used a D Terminal port for outputting component.  The Wii uses an all-in-one port.  I have no idea what the technical differences are.

I never played my Cube through component, but I've played progressive scan Cube stuff through my Wii and there isn't really a big difference is visual quality between 480p Wii games and 480p Cube games.  Is it somehow true that the Wii makes Gamecube games look worse?

I have noticed that my Wii games look a fair bit better on 480p if they are running in 4:3 (really, try it), since most every Gamecube game was 4:3 also, I would imagine this is where the perceived disparity is accounted for.  Of course if you do that, you've got to put up with about 40% of your TV going unused.  So there's still no good solution until the Wii2 comes out.
