Assassin's Creed: The Definitive Evilbore Review
« on: November 14, 2007, 09:51:51 PM »
Ok, I popped AC into my 360 and walked into the kitchen to get my cat some food.  The game was loading as I did my little chore, and I suppenly heard a muffled song, in the distance. . .why, it was ABBA'S DANCING QUEEN!

I thought to myself "Holy shit, in the intro, when they reveal it is the future, they must have some nerdlinger scientist jammin' to ABBA during the intro!  That is so fucking awesome!  This is going to be the best game ever!"

I walked back into my living room, ABBA still playing.  I became suspicious.  Why was the game playing the entire song?  With no dialogue or anything?  Did Ubi do the right thing and include an ABBA MUSIC VIDEO in the intro?

Then, disappointmenton.  The game was at the title screen, just about silent.  I still heard ABBA.  I quickly reached into my hoodie pocket and pulled out my iPod, which was playing ABBA's Gold, track 1, Dancing Queen.  I had accidentally hit the Play All option on my iPod, and it started at artist 1, album 1, track 1 on my iPod.  ABBA Gold, Dancing Queen.

Fuck you Ubisoft.

3/10

Why do you want Dancing Queen as part of AC's soundtrack?  That's pretty gay even for a homo.

Actually, yes, it works out rather well.  I honestly have no real complaints about the controls, but they are definitely the sort of thing you have to try for yourself.

I may, MAY have been a bit premature in making my GOTY list. . .

After a few days, but I enjoy all the time I spend with them.

Funny thing about this game:  so far, the only person with questionable voice acting is the main character.  Most of the time he is fine, though.

Yeah, exactly, its as stealthy as it needs to be, but is direct enough to be fun. Im really amazed by the controls the. The range of things you can do, and how easy it is to remember how to do all of them in the heat of battle. God damn its sometimes more fun to lead guards on a chase than it is to slaughter them.

Get the 360 version.

while the PS3 version is good, it's suffers from screen tearing while rotating the camera around some areas, especially high areas.

both version have tearing/framedrop IIRC, but 360 version is better overall, plus some claim textures are better in the 360 version as well.

this video might help you see what i am talking about: http://www.gamersyde.com/leech_5354_en.html

I've been playing the 360 version in 720p mode.  There is minor tearing.  It seemed more apparent earlier on in the game, right after I got into the open world.  I have no idea if it had to do with the game getting warmed up, loading, or my eyes adjusting to it, but by the end of my session tonite, I wasn't noticing it much, if at all.

The framerate isn't perfect, but it's close enough.  You sometimes get the odd slowdown or hitch when it goes into a cinematic cum inducing view.  Nothing that affects gameplay.

The game looks fantastic.  Total package, it might be the best looking game I've seen.  Now, taken on their own as individual elements, the lighting, models, environments and clothes probably aren't the best, but as a total package, they come together at least as good as the best I've seen.  It also has some of the nicest, most realistic ragdoll I've seen.  That means that a lot of the time it is pretty subtle, but you get special ragdoll goodness when you, say, fall off a building, or throw a guard off a building.

But yeah, there are technical flaws, but if you complained about most of them, even the tearing, you'd be nitpicking.  It's a visual 10, both for technical reasons and consistent OMG design.

It kind of reminds me of a mix of Thief and the Hitman games, with simpler controls.  It's easy to play, which is good, but the whole blending in thing is straight Hitman, and there is plenty of Thiefy slow skulking around, waiting for the right moment.

The game only really tears for me in the Kingdom. In the cities, this is honestly the best looking game I've ever seen. Altair animates like a real person. It's pretty impressive. I imagine it would be more impressive if you were controlling his animations in free run, but still, it's awesome.

Here you go:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8616557&postcount=3432

Quote from: Blimblim
Ok since people have been more or less accusing me of using the PS3 review copy to put the PS3 version of AC in a bad light, I went and bought a retail copy. So now I can compare directly.
First of all, as far as I can tell the framerate is identical between the review and retail copies.
Now the bad part: The PS3 version of AC is quite noticeably inferior to the 360. First of all the tearing is much more present, and the framerate drops quite a bit more. Also to my surprise the NPC voices, at least for the guards/passer by are at what seems to be a lower sample rate. They definitely don't sound as good as the voices during the cutscenes and I certainly don't remember being such a difference in the 360 version. The pop-in also seemed a bit worse, but then it's quite visible in both versions anyway.
One good point though, the smoke/fog effect is much better in the PS3 version. It looks volumetric instead of being a transparent texture on a polygon or something like that.
Whatever happens the PS3 version is still very playable, but given the choice go for the 360 one. There is no doubt what so ever that it's better.

I can't really imagine playing this game with the Six Axis. Holding the Right Trigger and pressing the face buttons seems like it would feel more comfortable with the 360 controller.

Not that I'm all "weaksauce" and can't use a the DS style controller but the ergonomic layout of the 360 controller just feels right

Funny how Gamespot said that the PS3 version has better framerate when everyone else said the opposite.  Aside from a steadier framerate on the 360 version, are there any other differences, such as anti-aliasing or lighting?

Surprisingly, J-rzez said that control preferences is why he went with the PS3 version.
