Resident Evil Umbrelalalala Chronicles For Wii Wii
« on: November 15, 2007, 07:45:08 AM »
Picked up Biohazard Umbrella Chronicles tonight.  I was told last week that they weren't going to have enough copies of the "Expert Package," which is just a fancier way of saying "game plus plastic gun-like shell thing, AKA 'zapper'," but they had one copy left that the dumb-ass clerk didn't seem to notice.  ANYWAY...

Much like Ghost Squad, you don't need the Wii Zapper to play this game.  In fact, it's more effective to NOT use the zapper; you have to make use of the Wiimote's A and B buttons together, and it's far easier to press both or alternate between them when using the Wiimote alone than it is inside the zapper shell.  Much like Ghost Squad, you also get a target reticule on screen to make aiming with the Wiimote easy.  The game play is like any typical gun shooter; it's all on rails, and you're along for the ride, shooting everything along the way.

Umbrella Chronicles is pretty story-heavy for a gun shooter, and is FILLED with Resident Evil fan service.  During missions, shooting objects in the backgrounds will sometimes make hidden items, such as information on Umbrella, available for viewing in the game archives.  You can also find new weapons to use, all of which can be upgraded a la Resident Evil 4.  You can choose from two different playable characters in each level, although I'm not sure if there's any differences between them other than starting weapons.

The gameplay allows for headshots, counters (when enemies rush you), knifing, and grenade lobbing.  As this is a gun shooter, the zombies you encounter go down quicker, but also move faster to make up for this.  Boss battles are interesting and allow for all attacks to be countered, either by hitting the right commands on screen or shooting the right area of the boss's body.  Waggle is used only for reloading and knifing; knifing works perfectly, although there were a few times where I had to shake the controller several times to get the gun to reload.  When you run out of ammo, you also automatically reload, which is a nice feature generally missing from gun shooters, although reloading time is also longer and not instantaneous like in other gun games.  Another addition to the game is the "free look" camera.  Although the game is on rails, you can use the nunchuck to look around the environments, which helps in finding hidden items.

The game primarily contains levels from Resident Evil 0, 1, 3, and then a brand new scenario, but there are also unlockable side-missions from various games and different characters' (including enemies) viewpoints.  It's also supposed to be pretty long for a gun shooter, with around 22 stages total and 6-7 hours worth of game play on normal difficulty.  Ghost Squad, in comparison, can be beaten once in around 20-25 minutes.

Visually, this is one of the better-looking Wii games out there.  It's got a smoother and cleaner look compared to Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, and the character models look fantastic, just like in the Game Cube Resident Evil games.  The music is nice, as are the ambient sound effects.  I'd recommend this title to both gun shooter and Resident Evil fans, and if you're both, you're really going to enjoy this.

The game also allows for two player simultaneous play, although some of the of the unlockable side-missions are single-player only.  That is pretty much the only complaint I have about this game so far; it plays great and I assume any of the issues from preview builds have been addressed.

---

So now I got this, Ghost Squad, DDR Hottest Party, Mario Galaxy, and in two weeks, I've decided to get Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes on Wii instead of PS2.  WII IS HEATING UP

so unlike Ghost Squad there's no option to calibrate your wiimote/zapper and get actual on screen aiming, right?

Sony Bravia HDTV.  It's only 20 inches, but Biohazard 4 Wii Edition was pretty damn jaggie-looking on my set.  This looks better and seems to be using the RE4 engine.

Is it less or more awesome than Illbleed?  Did you puke with pleasure?  Shit with fear?

Illbleed?  I'm not sure how I'd compare a gun shooter to Illbleed's bizarre survival horror action.

I didn't see a calibration option, so this one looks to be pointer-only.  If you want pure lightgun action, get Ghost Squad, no doubt.  I do think that UC has much, much better boss encounters though, and I've been reading that the game's difficulty really ramps up in the later scenarios.

I didn't know this game was out in the US this week.

I just did the first two missions.  It's all well put together and the controls work well, but this isn't really an intense arcade shootemup.  I mean, the pace might pick up, but if it's using the mechanics illustrated in the first sections, the gameplay will never be super fast or anything.  If it does get super fast, that would make things like reloading a total pain in the ass.

So basically, we have a competently done light gun game.  It'd be a lot more fun with a second player.  Also, I wish you didn't have to use the nunchuck.  It's barely used, and it's taking up my left hand when I could be fingering my asshole with it.

I'd only prioritize purchasing this if I had a second player.  I don't regret my purchase, but a second player would make this like 3 times as fun.

People who have finished it or have gotten further are all saying it gets more intense and the difficulty ramps up later on.  Also you probably will have to go back and replay previous levels to rank up your weapons, since the difficulty increases.  If it's still too easy, play on hard, man!

I've read that you don't really have to use the nunchuck, or at least, the second player doesn't.  Haven't tried it myself, but how would you switch weapons without it?

Absolutely; these kinds of games are always better multiplayer!  But this game is also pretty heavy on story.  For multiplayer, Ghost Squad flat-out kicks this game's ass all over.

You can switch weapons using the d-pad.  That's how I've been doing it.  I'd try the game chuckless, but I just turned it off to put a movie in.

I did play a bit more, and the difficulty does ramp up, so it's all good.  Solid game, but I'd like it a lot more if I had a second player.  Can't blame the game for that.

One thing I don't like is that if the pointer leaves the screen, there's like a second spent trying to get it back on screen.  It's like it gets "stuck" on the edges of the screen.  It's not a big problem or anything, but it's a bit of a nag for a game that encourages you to shake the controller to knife people and reload.

I'd recommend this to RE fans, no problem.

The preview versions supposedly had a shitload of problems.  The retail version seems to have fixed them all; even on that other forum that won't be mentioned, impressions are overwhelmingly positive, save for the "Mother Effin' Lord of Shitacular Taste," as his tag reads.

Finished the RE0 levels, now on RE1 in the mansion.  The RE0 scenario was broken down into three main levels, with two extra unlockable scenarios where you play as Wesker.  Although the story is original (including CG cut scenes), most of these two levels are just going through the same main levels in a different order.   Still a nice extra feature.

In 2P mode, you share the same life meter.  It makes hunting for first aid bottles and herbs a lot better...

I never played RE0, so it was a better way to get the story down than playing the actual game.   ;)  The RE0 chapters are definitely easier than the RE1 chapters...it's good to see the difficulty ramping up.  Crimson heads!  :o

Umbrella Chronicles, Fire Emblem and Trauma Center New Blood all kind of coming out in the shadow of Mario.  I think I'll rent UC first off, just because I need an action title to balance out my mostly adventurish Wii library.

Does this or Ghost Squad have better 2player?

It's best if the story in Resident Evil 0 is just altogether skipped, what awful shit that game was, it was the breaking point of the old Resident Evil formula at least for me, regardless of the 2 player "zap" system.  I watched some of the scenes on youtube of Umbrella Chronoles: RE0 section, and they modified the story quite a bit/cut out some bits

...good.

So has anyone played with 2 players?  Do the enemies come up more frequently?  I believe that you have to share a lifebar with 2 players, but alas it looks like good fun with 2 people.

I'm thinking about getting this game with the Toys R Us buy two get one free sale along with Metroid Prime 3, but I can't honestly think of another Wii game worth it .

I played a ton of 2P yesterday.  It didn't seem like there were more enemies, but it did seem like some of them were a little harder to kill.

This game starts off pretty easy and gets more challenging as you get further into it; it's a pretty big game for a light gun shooter, so if it seems to easy, hang in there (and turn the difficulty up!).

I also played Silent Hill Arcade yesterday.  THAT game is how not to turn a survival horror game into a shooter.  RE UC is fucking great.

Whoa, I just got it and its pretty dang awesome.

Also, Capcom has pulled off some crazy voodoo magic of some sort to get the game looking as good as it does on the Wii.  Not only are the graphics really damn good(on the Wii?!), the visual output looks great.  For some reason it looks better on my HD set then any other Wii game by FAR.  The picture is sharp and smooth and teh pretty.  I know, what the hell?

I also really like how it functions as a crash course in RE history.  It was as much or more fun playing through Resident Evil 0 in about an hour and change in rail shooter form then it was playing through it as a plodding, 10-hour game.
