Listening to these Kubrick soundtracks has gotten me in THE MOOD for classical.  Well, Eternal Sonata also helped.  Go ahead, call me a cigarillo, I dare you.

Now, I'm not too schooled in classical music aside from knowing the major composers.  I'll learn to like whatever I acquire, so no biggie.  What I do need help with is knowing which recordings are worthwhile.  It would be cool if you could limit shit to recordings that can easily be pirated, or are available on iTunes.

So git on it, kunts.

Start with Bachs Brandonburg concertos (numbers 2 and 3 are the best)

Mozarts 29th, and 4th, and sonata for two panions.  Bethoveens moon light sonota and for elise.

I'll post a bunch more tomorow.  Tonight I'm tired.  Too tired for correct spelling even!

Bach is good but his compositions were limited by the instruments of his time.  Since you just played Eternal Sonta, why don't you start off with Chopin's nocturnes?  Rachmaninoff is good too if you don't want something that Synbios recommended.   Both of them compose a lot of romantic stuff which should be perfect for a emo homo like yourself.

Bartok's string quartets.  I recently started having sex and while it's pretty nice, hearing Bartok's string quartets for the first time had a much more profound effect on me.

http://www.amazon.com/Bela-Bartok-Quartets-Emerson-Quartet/dp/B000001G9O

this recording by the Emerson String Quartet is pretty damn good.  some snobs claim it's too polished or whatever and prefer other recordings, but you won't go too wrong with this one.

Kubrick used another piece of Bartok's in The Shining, for this scene:

There're not that many options if you're just pirating, idiot.  Do you think that most kids today still listen to classical music? I checked already with a torrent search engine which is why I didn't bother being specific.  Besides, I already told him that Chopin's nocturnes are his best compositions.

my attempt at embedding that Youtube vid of Bartok in The Shining didn't seem to show up on account of I suck at the internets, so here's a proper link

Recursivelyenumerable, iTunes has a ton of Emerson String QUartet stuff.  Anything else you'd recommend?  I just bought the Bartok set.  How's their Shostakovich?

OMG that is one of my single favorite scenes in the Shining.

Tvc dl mozart's requiem. As distinguished mentally-challenged as classifying a peice of music as BEST EVAR for obvious reasons. This is probably as close as it gets for me. Get karajan if you can.

Karajan's recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is a classic.  There's an amazing box set of Eliot Gardiner conducting all of Beethoven's symphonies using the original timings and such, which I recommend as well.

If you're buying stuff off iTunes, then check out Liszt's Libestraum.  Many master pianists play it to demonstrate their mastery of the piano.

Yes but it dosent make it enjoyable to listen to. Chopin's etude are awful yet technically insane. Chopin's work in general = sex as far as piano goes.

Would that be this Beethoven: 9 Symphonies set?

iTunes appears to actually have a decent selection of classical music.  No idea why that surprises me; it's not like many of these people would probably fight over royalties and shit.

Yes, this one:

I haven't heard the Emerson do Shostakovich.  My favorite Shostakovich of what I've heard (which is relatively little) is symphony no. 4 but it kind of functions as a guilty pleasure for me, mostly I put it on to get off on the angst and bombast.  That might not reflect the piece itself so much as my listening habits.

Eh, I don't believe this particular version of the symphonies has been released on any other label.

Maybe you're thinking of one of Karajan's Beethoven recordings?  This was the first one that popped up on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Ludwig-van-Beethoven-9-Symphonien/dp/B000001GBQ/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1195195265&sr=8-3

Actually, Amazon has a pretty good list of essential classical recordings, TVC should check that out.

DISAGREE.

I don't like Karajan for Beethoven.  He's good but Sir Georg Solti was better.

TVC, get this boxset of Beethoven's 9 Symphonies.  Sir Georg and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra do a better job conveying the subtle nuances of Beethoven's work than Karajan, who just seems to want to make everything as forceful as possible.

A note on classical music labels- generally, the ones with good sound reproduction are Deutsch Gramaphone, London, and Decca.  IMO with classical music moreso than any other genre, the quality of the recording is paramount.  You can walk into any Border's/Barnes and Noble and buy a boxset of Beethoven's 9 Symphonies for like $30, but it's going to be an inferior recording.  I would also NOT buy any classical music over itunes due to the loss.  Listening to a good recording of classical music on high end headphones is one of my favorite things to do.

Let me know if you want further recommendations but I'd say start with Beethoven's Symphonies and this collection of his piano concertos.  Again, Georg Solti does a masterfully understated job of conducting and Ashkenazy's playing is splendid.  Also, with London recordings you don't ever have to worry about sound quality.

Hey, Raoul.  The Karajan Beethoven 9th I've acquired appears to be the same recording used in ACO, so it was a worthwhile purchase.

I plan on going into Settle today, so Iw ill see about hitting a good music store.
