Favorite Assassin's Creed Moments
« on: November 16, 2007, 01:04:16 PM »
I'll start:

1.) After spending a block walking through Acre with a stupid beggar lady following me around I finally grew tired of her, grabbed her by the shirt and flung her into a pottery stand.

2.) Pushing my horse on the way to Acre to full speed and ramming into a crowd of the King's men. The horse of course collapsed and rolled, and after rolling off the horse I dispatched the small army. The ones that weren't dead on the ground I walked over to and stabbed in the neck with my hidden blade.

3.) The rooftops of Acre are patrolled. After silencing a street preacher, who I was just kinda tired of, I ran to the rooftops to avoid getting the crime pinned on me. As I crouched on the edge of the roof to watch below I hear "Hay, you aren't permitted here!" I stand up and there's two archers, one aimed at me barking warnings, both a rooftop away. I test my hidden knife to make sure its ready, then I hit a full sprint. Instead of jumping across the roof I ran across 2x4 beam connecting the buildings and the moment I was in range lept with my hidden blade extended and stuck it in the first archer's neck.

The second archer fired a shot that went wide. I knew this was my chance. If I got there before he switched to his sword I could leap on him and kill him with the hidden blade. I locked on to him and sprinted at him, and I leapt, but he caught me as I fell, his hand on my wrist keeping him from getting stabbed in the neck and then rolled/tossed me to the side and off the roof.

Landing in a burnt out building the quarters were close, so I switched to my short blade before he dropped down from above. He struck out with his slower and longer blade but I countered his attack, and my short blade went into his foot, and then out and up against his chest and face.

Ahhhhh. GOTY

screw it.  i love that everyone here plays games at a different time than other people and make their own threads instead of one "official" thread.  It gives you more insight and opinions into the game and it keeps it from turning into fanboy BS.

MAF: are the towns densely populated everywhere?  from what i've seen there's TONS of people on screen but i didn't know if it was like that in most places in the town or just in like the center or something.

can you go batshit insane and start slaughtering people?  Do they simply respawn or is it like oblivion where they're gone forever?

You can go batshit insane and kill people, but the population of the game is a quarter of a million. Not sure how respawning works.

The towns are pretty populated, there are a few dark places with 1 or two people skulking about. The fighting system in the game is really good so while you may be good enough to take on 11 people at once, its still slightly dangerous, and when town alerts happen and the whole town is against you the citizens throw rocks n shit. There are also vigilante groups that help you by holding back guards if theyre nearby when shit goes down. Their favor with you goes up when you help poor people getting hassled by guards.

You can gentle shove people around but I live on the rooftops most of the time anyway.

I remember in this small town outside of acre a fight started and the towns people kept running away screaming that I murdered someone and I kept leapin to each one and killing them (which hurts my sync ratio) but they kept getting in range of another citizen that would witness me kill them then I would have to kill that one. I ended up giving up and stealing a horse.

The horse stuff is awesome btw.

holy shit that does sound awesome.

how is the AI?  is it decent enough to challenge you?

and there's really 250,000 people in the world?  wow.  that's pretty awesome.  i want it just to try to kill everyone now.  that should be an achievement.

In combat the AI is pretty decent, especially the special troops like templars cause they love to throw in punches and kicks or just send an arm in and throw you to the ground. Its even harder when the guards have mixed weapons. Like one will be shooting arrows at you, another will be a heavy swordsman and the other will be a longswordsman. The longswordsman you can take out with a short blade doing counters easily but the heavyswordsman will overpower you if you have your shortblade out so you can counter with your longblade instead. You can also work in the hidden blade depending on opportunities. I've found battering away with a longblade works best, even in groups since the game makes it easy to engage multiple people at once during a fight and youre surrounded.

I still favor the long blade, but ive found a use for the short blade when im in smaller rooms. Still dont have my throwing knives yet which will be useful against archers. Archers have bleh aim tho so if you can catch them before their draw their longsword its all ok.

Oh haha earlier today I jumped off a building on to my horse. Granted I didnt land sitting, I just sort landed then sat down. Also horses you have picked up generally follow you around, so if a fight drags you far away the horse will keep close to you so you dont have to search all over creation for it.

[shurg] It's probably because of the massive hype the game has seen over the last year or two...

I never really paid much attention to all of that, though. And as such, I'm really enjoying it.

Ditto, the last time something like this happened was with space giraffe, which personally I loved.

I'll rent it eventually, if I spend another $60 on games this year I'd have to kick my own ass.

Haha, poor homeless lady. She harassed me and I threw her too hard into a closed door and she died. :(

I think the lack of a real death penalty really makes this game even more fun. Plus the Templars are a bitch to kill sometimes. There's like 33 of them or something and you have to find and kill them all to get the achievement. I love finding them cause they sit there gloating at first as I approach them.

Fun Fact: Dont bother with a short blade against templars. Short blade counters can sometimes not land a killing blow. I think longblade counters always land a killing blow. Plus templars hit hard so a short blade is REALLY hard to deflect with. They also like to throw you the fuck around, but i've become pretty good at recovering from a tumble.

Assassin's Creed:

+ Amazing graphics
+ Extremely well done controls that feel natural. Jumping from roof to roof is a wonderful feeling, especially when you have the area in high alert. 3d Zelda's could learn a thing or two from AC's use of auto jump.
+ You aren't penalized when you die, you simply respawn to the nearest checkpoint. While this makes the game seem extremely easy, it's far from it. I tried to take on 5 or 6 guys myself and got raped. I'm not sure if that's because it was near the beginning and I hadn't fully adjusted to fighting yet.
+ Good battle system, at least compared to the first PoP (I haven't played the others yet).
+ Stealth kills are badass, and you basically rack up kills one after another. It's cool because you've got options
+ Climbing stuff is just as fun as it is in Crackdown, and jumping is just as exhilarating. While I haven't really found anything from exploring high roof tops yet, you do get to scope out possible escape routes if you get caught. Also, since the game is so damn beautiful, climbing whatever you can get your hands on is a joy.
+ *I* think the "plot twist" is cool, although even if it wasn't there, it wouldn't take a thing away from the game. It's nice to have.
+ There are THOUSANDS of people in each area, and you can do lots of things to them: kill them, pickpocket them... It's like Shenmue with a next gen face lift.
+ The horse segments are handeled very well, and give me Shadow of the Colossus, and especially Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess flashbacks.

- No subtitles is a big thing for me. For a story based game like this, I expect subtitles. I have been doing things and sometimes I don't understand why I'm doing them, and you should never feel that way in a game like this. Hopefully, a damn subtitles patch is released.
- The AI, at least so far, is pretty incompetent. I'll give an example with stealth kills; Usually, you will have 3-5 guards in one area. Let's say you assassinate one with your stealth knife. All you really have to do after you kill him is blend in, and the guards won't notice you. They will go and examine the body, during which, the alert status will be high alert, and if you touch anything you will be discovered. After that, which takes a mere 5-10 seconds, they go back to their positions and everything's back to normal, when you can continue assassinating the guards in the area. It's a little too simple for my tastes to be honest, but then again, this is pretty early. It's pretty hilarious; I'll kill some guy and then his comrade, who was 5 feet away comes over to his corpse and is like WHO DID THIS and I'm right behind him.

Basically, this game is Grand Theft Auto in the crusades instead of modern day, and it's a pretty damn good sandbox game, especially when compared to other games in the genre released on next gen consoles (the average Crackdown and fun Saints Row). Many reviews belittle the so called "repetitive" nature, but it's no less repetitive than a GTA game. If this genre is your thing and you'd like a different take on the sandbox genre without the guns and cars, you should check this out.

I've taken out 5 Templars so far. Those guys are tough! Best way to kill them: lure them to a building so they have to climb up to catch you, and hit him right when he gets on the roof. Do this repeatedly and you've killed a Templar. It's pretty tough any other way. :o

Upon suggestion of someone, I pushed a guard off a roof just to see the crowd go batshit. That was awesome. :lol

Yeah templars one on one are hard. I kinda LIKE taking them out that way. Once you do a lot of the side quests like hitting all the vantage points, saving a lot of people being hassled by the man, your sync gauge grows larger and larger, so you can take out templars one on one. However Templars + Others is tricky business. I ran into a templar and 3 normal soldiers and barely escaped with my life, but that was a few hours ago, I could probably take em now. Still, I had just crashed a horse into them ;)
